Gold Jewelry – Is the High Cost of Gold Affecting the Designers?

Filed under: Online Jewelry Resources — admin @ 4:04 pm

Gold has been pricing out over $580.00 an ounce in recent weeks. Earlier this year the price was $730.00 an ounce. On May 12th, the price reached a 26 year high of $732.00 an ounce. Since then, prices have dropped twenty-two percent which still leaves the price in the $580.00 an ounce range.

Prices for gold jewelry seems to depend more on the design value of the jewelry than the actual amount of gold contained in it. According to the World Gold Council, sales in the United States seem to be rising. The Council believes the US customers buy gold for adornment, not the investment value of the jewelry

Since jewelers place their orders months in advance, it will be interesting to see what merchandise is available for the holiday season. With the fluctuating prices, it will be more difficult for both designers and retailers this year.

The gold in the stores now, was purchased prior to this recent instability of the price. Since gold is at a high now, the gold in our stores for the holiday season will have been purchased at almost all-time high prices when the inventories must be increased for the seasonal sales.

Some retailers, including Blue Nile, an online jeweler, is not totally passing on the higher prices to the consumer. This creates lower profit margins for designers but make gold a better buy for the consumer.

Shop wisely. Check prices. If you can be flexible, your will find exactly what you want at an affordable price. Give the “Gift of Gold” to your special person

ThankYouRichJerk Ebook Review

Filed under: Books + Authors — admin @ 2:58 pm

In the world of “Newbie” internet marketing E-books, many names come to my
mind. The Rich Jerk. Neil Shearing…OK, too many names are in my mind and I’m not
going to list them all. The point is that there are a *lot* of people out there writing
“How to make money” guides for those that are new to marketing products on the
internet, or “Newbies”. I recently found such a title from Holly Mann, of
ThankYouRichJerk.com.

Now, you may not have heard of Holly. I never had, until I saw her ebook on sale at
eBay. She’s not one of the “GURU” types, although I believe she would make a great
one. She has a unique selling proposition - going up in a head-to-head with The
Rich Jerk, and doing it for a lot less. Now, if you’ve read The Rich Jerk’s ebook, you
know his style is a little in-your-face, harsh, even insulting. Holly doesn’t take that
attitude up in her writing - she has a gentle, helpful writing style, as opposed to the
“I’m rich, do what I say, stupid” mentality that The Rich Jerk and others use.

Before I get to the contents of Holly’s title, it is amusing to note that she beats out
The Rich Jerk on Google for certain keywords - and shows that fact off on her
website, proving the point that she knows what she’s talking about. Her website is
not full of over-hyped, copycatted ad copy. Simple, to the point, matter-of-fact. She
does it well.

Most “Newbie” ebooks focus on one particular area of internet marketing. Affiliate
sales, Niche websites, Public domain material, etc. Her book, entitled “Breakthrough
Money-Making Secrets Revealed!”, circumvents the style of the traditional one-
subject book and gives the reader a very good, broad understanding of what to do,
where and how to start, and some insider tips that I didn’t even think of. With the
exception of a few spelling errors and the “midnight infomercial” name, this book is
pure gold.

What’s in the book? Without giving too much away, it covers where to get freebies to
put on your site, SEO tactics, Affiliate programs, hosting and design resources,
blogging, and much, much more. Good, solid information on the basics of starting
internet marketing. Newbies are going to avoid quite a few mistakes (Holly, where
were you 5 years ago??) if they take this book and read it start to finish. Surprisingly,
for all the information that is covered, it is a quick read at only 31 pages. Holly
didn’t add a lot of fluff (unlike The Rich Jerk’s book) - it’s written to be read and
absorbed without having to take a nap after page 18.

The thing that really put my opinion over the top was conversing with Holly. She is a
friendly individual who, in subsequent emails after my purchase, shared more
valuable information with me about my promotions and products. She gave me
some ideas that I would have never thought of, and was genuinely interested in
what I was doing. In the impersonal world of internet marketing, Holly is a true
secret to be discovered. (Try asking your favorite GURU for advice on something you
are doing - chances are you won’t even get a response.)

My thoughts: If you are starting out in internet marketing, get Holly’s book. If you
are experienced, get it anyway - you’re going to find at least one thing in this book
that you didn’t know.

Preserve Your Leather Items with the Best Possible Care

Filed under: Home Improvement Center — admin @ 2:17 pm

Leather clothing, furniture and car seats are among the most
common items you might have to deal with. Taking care of a
leather product implies cleaning it, conditioning it, polishing
and protecting it from various elements. Make sure to take care
of your leather items in a ventilated area. Try not to spend a
lot of time working on your leather items as they can, when in
contact with the maintenance products, produce various
irritations. Let’s have a look at the four separate stages of
leather care:

When looking for a leather-cleaning product, you have to keep in
mind a few things that will ensure proper cleaning and less
chances of accidental leather damage. Try to find items that
will not strip away the natural oils found in leather. This
means that the cleaner you are using should not leave residue,
as this is often a cause for leather degradation and weakened
stitching. As with painting a house, you should try the cleaning
product on the item in an area that is not readily visible.
Remove the cleaning product, after letting it do its job, by
using a damp cloth. Have a look for cleaning solutions that also
restore the original look of the leather, although these are
generally more expensive than regular leather cleaners.

Conditioning your leather items is a stage you might skip.
However, conditioning works great on a temporary basis, as it is
meant for occasional usage and usually works well in restoring a
shiny and flexible leather element. Petroleum products are to be
avoided, since they have mid and long term effects on your
leather items. Polishing is the next step when you want to
restore the beauty of your leather products. Make sure to avoid
polishing products that contain pigmentation agents. They will
stick to other things that the leather comes in contact with,
and they also have a tendency to make the leather flaky and dry.

The most important protection for your leather is against
humidity. Use high quality moisture stoppers to prevent damage
from rain or other liquids. If you do not use such moisture
protection, chances are that your leather will react negatively
to any contact with liquids. The main problem with such
protection is that it makes cleaning and conditioning a
difficult task, as it makes the leather greasy and fills the
fibers and pores. Leather mildew removals are also necessary
once in a while. You can do this by using a cloth dampened in
mildly concentrated alcohol and wiping the leather surface
gently.

Using a Home DNA Test Kit

Filed under: Lawyers Hall — admin @ 10:59 am

A home DNA test kit is exclusively used in the sampling stage of a home based DNA paternity test. The key component in the kit is usually a pair of serrated cotton swabs, and some DNA free sample tubes. These two components allow the obtaining of the source material which will ultimately be used to determine the biological relationship of a child to the putative parents.

Using a home DNA test kit is very straightforward and requires so little expertise, that a child could carry out the procedure. In broad terms all that is required, is the removal of some cheek cells from the inside of the mouth by rubbing the cotton swabs on the inside of the mouth. A few gentle rubs of the serrated cotton swab on the inside of both cheeks should result in sufficient material being recovered to allow a full DNA paternity test to be carried out. It is important that a single DNA kit is used only for one person, to ensure there can be no possibility of a mix-up between samples. This will ensure the reliability of the final result.

Once the samples have been taken they should be placed in the sample tubes provided and the tubes sealed. This will ensure preservation of the cellular material present on the swab heads, and prevent any environmental contamination of the source cells. In general the identity of the biological mother of the child is rarely questioned, and most applications of this technology are in confirming the identity of the biological father. If this is the case, a sample from the child and the putative father are essential, with a sample from the mother being desirable but not essential.

Samples are generally mailed back to the testing company to carry out a full DNA analysis, generally resulting in a report within a few weeks. The report should provide a clear unambiguous outcome to answer the question as to the biological relationship of the putative father to the child.

If the results of the DNA testing are to be used in a court of law, and require a legal standing, a home DNA test is not usually admissible. A much more rigorous approach in verifying the source of every sample is required. The process of obtaining the samples is witnessed and fully documented, including taking photographs of all the parties associated with each sample. This continuity is maintained with the laboratory environment, and allows an expert witness to provide an opinion in court, as to the relevance of the test results.

The Get Lean, Stay Powerful Workout

Filed under: Fitness Training — admin @ 10:30 am

This is a nice little workout for those who want to maintain or increase strength, while knocking some excess fat off the body. It combines power exercises and sprinting with minimal rest between exercises.

Diet is very important here. You can’t be trying to lean up and eat McDonald’s at the same time. Clean it up with fruits and veggies, chicken, fish, lean meat and whole grains.

Forget the whole no-carb crap. The brain needs carbohydrates for nourishment and you need them for the energy that hard workouts demand. It’s the cheap carbs like white bread, candy, soda and chips that you don’t need. Fruits and veggies will never hurt anyone, period.

The Get Lean, Stay Powerful Workout

Overhead Press 2 x 6-12
Pulldowns 2 x 6-12
Squats 1 x 15-20
Pullovers 1 x 20
Bench Press 2 x 6-12
Sit-ups 1 x 25
Interval Sprints: 10-12 minutes with one minute sprinting and one minute at an easy pace

Notes: Workout 2-3 days per week. Start out and do as many intervals as you can working up to the 10-12 minute range. If this feels like too much, drop down to one hard set to failure for each exercise. If you decide to do one hard set and don’t have a squat rack or a partner, DO NOT go to failure on the squats or bench press!

Understand that to be successful in any weight training program - hard work is a must! Half-hearted effort does nothing for you. If you’re new to weight training or grossly out of shape, consult a physician first. End of disclaimer.

Video Podcasting

Filed under: Web Of Podcasts — admin @ 9:53 am

The original audio Podcasting concept was developed by Adam Curry. It was created as a alternative content distribution method that allows people to produce and distribute audio programming. Video is a recently added feature.

Video Podcasting is the combination of video files made available for download, a specialized xml file and software capable of reading the xml file. The xml file is known as Real Simple Syndication.

Each video Podcast publisher creates a unique Real Simple Syndication ( which is more commonly known as RSS ) file. The purpose of the RSS file is to describe the video, distinguish it from other publisher’s material, presenting the most current content available and allowing people to subscribe to individual Podcast “stations”.

Anyone with a Internet connection and access to a web host that allows media file and xml file hosting, is capable of distributing their own video content with Podcasting.

Peer to Peer data transfer can be used to distribute the video Podcast media files and minimize bandwidth requirements. Bittorrent and Dijjer are both open source software applications that can be used for Peer to Peer Podcast distribution.

Creating a video Podcast is very easy. Video can be recorded using free or low cost software. Web cams or digital cameras can be used to capture video imaging. The “raw” video can then be edited using open source or free software. The completed video can then be encoded using open source video codecs, such as VP3, Theora or Dirac, to compress the video and optimize it for Internet distribution. Free software can also be used to create the RSS files.

Video Podcasting does not require special server distribution software such as Internet broadcasting does. There are no technical restrictions on the types of video encoding formats available for video Podcasting.

Building a 16 ft. Grand Banks dory

Filed under: Angling — admin @ 12:50 am

As a kid I did a lot of boat building, mainly scale models that were not able to sail, although I did actual build a few boats that were, more or less, capable of sailing. I even once build a 10 feet boat, or shall I say raft. I accomplished this with a few friends and we had great fun sailing it on the local river. It was not really water proof and while one person was rowing, the others had to make sure that they removed the water quicker then it was entering our boat.

Then sadly one day we failed. I was rowing at the time, and we were in the middle of the river when it was clear we were sinking. I stopped rowing to assist with the hosing, but this only slowed down the process of sinking, it did not stop it. So I started to row again in on effort to reach dry land before we sank, thus avoiding having to swim to safety.

And guess what: We made it! Just before the boat really started to sink we managed to jump ashore. Here we watched as our pride and joy slowly sank to the bottom of the river. It was then that we realised we were at the wrong side of the river and this left us with a problem. We either had to walk to the nearest bridge, 10 kilometers upriver, so that would have been a 20 kilometer walk, or swim to the other side.

We decided on swimming. We did not see anyone around, so we quickly undressed, and with one hand holding our clothes above the water, we managed to get back to our own side of the river. Just as we were struggling to get out of the water a group of girls from our own school were passing by, and I can tell you we were not happy!

This all happened a long time ago and a few times in my live I have had plans of building a boat again. I have spent a good amount of time looking at boat building plans, but with boats size does matter.

I usually looked at boats between 30 and 40 feet, but the sheer volume of work involved has always stopped me from going ahead with my boat building plans.

Now I have decided to start small. I am going to build a 16 feet Grand Banks dory, which I want to fit with a small outboard engine. I boughtl the boat building plans, I got the working space, and by the time you read this article I might be finished already.

Later, who knows, I might build a 40 feet cabin cruiser, and tow my Grand Banks dory behind me. Then, if my cabin cruises sinks, I can always row to safety in my Grand Banks dory, dry and with my clothes on.

Here you can see the Grand Banks dory I am going to build: Grand Banks Dory.

Top Tips For Creating a “Pro” Looking Newsletter

Filed under: Publishing — admin @ 9:24 pm

Television, radio, advertising in newsprint or other print can
put a huge dent in your advertising budgets. Simply put, it just
becomes too expensive for the small business owner. What’s the
alternative? Newsletters are the alternative to the high cost of
advertising, and yet it is an excellent marketing tool for your
business. While saving a ton of money using this form of
advertising, many big companies and small companies are using
newsletters weekly, monthly to indirectly promote their products
and services these days. What does that say about using this
form of marketing? Everyone is on the same playing field when it
comes to newsletters! The key thing with newsletters is, which
ones get read? You want to make sure that it gets done right, so
you will be guaranteed that all your work putting together a
newsletter won’t go unnoticed.

In this section, read the top tips on how to create a ‘pro’
looking newsletter that will jump start a steady trail of
traffic to your website.

CONTENT AND FOCUS:

Your newsletter should focus on a subject in which you have a
great deal of knowledge. If you have a website that is geared
towards a specific product or service, you should take into
consideration what the focus of your site is. For instance,
let’s say that you specialize in Internet Marketing, you
wouldn’t write articles about ‘Automobiles.’ Articles should
have content on different marketing strategies and trends in
your field. Content is still king. I’m sure you’ve heard that
phrase throughout the web. Make sure what you write about has
substance to it and will hook the reader. A poorly written
article with not so great content will not get your newsletter
read. Make sure you start on the right foot with great and
interesting content.

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR:

Proofread all your content for grammar usage and spelling. There
is nothing worse than reading a newsletter with all kinds of
errors in them. If you’re anything like me, I have this pet
peeve on misspelled words and improper grammar usage. Have other
people proofread your content and make adjustments just to make
sure that you didn’t miss anything. It just doesn’t look
professional when you have all these mistakes in your
newsletter, and it won’t get visitors to come back to read more
errors!

TITLE:

Your title should sound intriguing and tell your potential
customers exactly what your publication is all about. The title
of your ezine is one of the most important keys in getting your
newsletter read. Be creative, and use different titles that
would get your publication listed towards the top instead of the
bottom. By doing that, you will give your publication an
advantage over the publications listed below yours. Many ezine
sites list their publications in alphabetical order, so when
coming up with a title, use the first three letters in the
alphabet, i.e. “Online Secrets”, you should say, “Advertising
Tips and Secrets.” You will be listed higher, which will put you
in a position to get the click through.

NEWSLETTER SCHEDULE:

You can publish your newsletter as many times as you like, but
the norm is once a month for most companies since they take time
and effort to formulate a quality newsletter. Anything that is
quickly put together at the last minute is probably not going to
be your best work. Just make sure that once you decide the time
frame or how often you will be sending out your newsletter, that
you stick with that. The worst thing you can do is to have
subscribers expecting a newsletter on the ‘first Wednesday’ of
each month, and for it not to be there. Stick and adhere to your
publication dates. No exceptions allowed.

STYLE:

The appearance of your site is one of the most important factors
in determining the success of your newsletter. A professionally
written, well-designed, content rich publication will guarantee
that your subscribers will return each time your newsletter goes
out. Keeping them there is the key. Only provide good quality
newsletters, with interesting and practical articles.

LAYOUT:

The format of your newsletter should resemble exactly or very
similar to the layout of your website. This keeps the
subscribers in familiar territory when they are viewing your
newsletter, they are able to pinpoint which website that
particular newsletter belongs to. If you do your research, good
newsletters are the ones that have the same format, color theme,
and similarity to their websites.

COLOR:

The color should reflect the colors of your current website.
Always use good taste in selecting colors. You don’t want to use
colors that are distracting or not pleasing to the eye. Three
basic colors within your newsletter is a good guide to go with.
Any more colors than three, can make your newsletter appear very
over stimulating and cluttered. Take a good look at your
website, from there, you should be able to come up with a
professional looking newsletter.

TABLE OF CONTENT: Include a table of content at the top of the
newsletter. This will allow the readers to scan the topics to
see if anything in the newsletter catches their interests. It
just shows a bit of organization as well as a sense of
professionalism when you provide a table of content to your
newsletter.

OPT-IN AND OPT-OUT:

Always give your subscribers the option to opt-in or opt-out to
receive your newsletters. If you’re concerned about why they
decided to stop subscribing to your newsletter, then by all
means, follow up with the customer and find out why they no
longer want to receive it. By offering them the option to
receive or not receive, is a good practice of common courtesy
behavior that you strongly adhere to. You wouldn’t want to keep
receiving newsletters that you politely asked to stop receiving?
Put yourself in their shoes by respecting their wishes.

TEST IN DIFFERENT FORMATS:

With the nature of the Internet and the various types of
programs that subscribers have, you may need to have several
formats for your newsletters for your subscribers to have the
ability to view them. Test them to your computer to make sure
that the font, size, and the style still comes out attractive
looking in various formats. If they are not to your liking, then
you may need to tweak them a bit until you are satisfied with
the look and outcome depending on the format. This does seem
like a bit of work, but you want to reach those customers who
don’t have the newer, faster programs.

Having your own newsletter will not only enable you to keep in
touch with your visitors, but will only increase your database
of targeted customers. Newsletters are cheap, and should be a
part of every small business owners’ marketing strategy. It will
be one of the best marketing decisions you will make.
