Cornish Never Died

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

The subject of dead languages has come up a lot for me lately. In a recent conversation, I mentioned my desire to learn Cornish, a Celtic language closely related to Welsh, and the response I got was “Oh, yeah, that’s a dead language, right?” I quickly came to the defense of Cornish, a language alive and well by my standards, but what began was a lively debate on what exactly constituted a dead language and whether or not Cornish fit the suit (yes, that was a Johnny Bravo reference).

I won’t get into all of that particular debate now (articles on that subject are fast on the heels of this one) but I’d like to explain my take on Cornish, why it never died and why it is alive and well when there are, at best, a few thousand people who understand it, and a few hundred who are actually fluent.

By most accounts, the last native monoglot speaker of Cornish was Dolly Pentreath, who died in 1777. So, if we assume that the death of the last native monoglot speaker is a reasonable requirement for a language to be considered dead, then that’s it. Cornish is a dead language, right? Not so fast.

First of all, by some accounts, Dolly Pentreath wasn’t a monoglot speaker of Cornish. She could speak English but simply refused to do it, or so legend would have it. Cheers to Dolly. Secondly, there is plenty of evidence that there were other polyglot (bi-lingual with English) speakers of Cornish at the time, and of living use of the language between 1777 and the present. It’s possible the people of Cornwall never completely let it go.

There are accounts of Cornish fisherman counting in Cornish right up until the 20th century. I doubt the fishermen of Dollys time stopped counting when Dolly died and neither did they start counting in Cornish later in her honor. They had been using it all along. Sure, it’s not fluency but bear with me on this.

There was also a ‘revival’ of Cornish that began almost as soon as Dolly died. A small community of non-native Cornish enthusiasts (many of whom may have learned from native speakers) maintained the language until more popular revival movements took over. Kept alive by enthusiasts, it seems that Cornish never actually died.

Although there isn’t a need to establish a direct ‘lineage’ from the native speakers of pre-1777 to modern times, I think it helps to provide a real connection between the speakers of Cornish then and today. A small cadre of non-native speaking enthusiasts have kept the language ‘in trust’ until a larger community of native speakers were prepared to take it up again, as it appears they are now doing.

There are official government-recognized bodies with tax-dollar budgets, local church services and road signs in Cornish. There are festivals, public gatherings and competitions to promote the language. There is a recent and official recognition as a European language. The people of Cornwall are acting as if Cornish is not a dead language nor a dying language, but a living and growing one.

It is exactly this attitude which makes Cornish a living language, now that the larger community has taken it up again. There are thousands of languages worldwide that are dying and will truly be dead because the indifferent communities around them don’t care, and the people who speak them can’t see the cultural treasure which they possess. The people of Cornwall are realizing what they have, and if Cornish is a living language to them, it will be a living ‘native’ language to their children.

Do You Really Know What You’re Buying?

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a popular gift show in my local area. My purpose in attending this gift show was to scope out my competition and the quality of their soy candles compared to what I offer. I was truly surprised with the results of how many candle exhibitors were present and was more so surprised with the results of how well they didn’t know their product.

Now my results are in no way to badger the company in anyway, but to open the eyes of our consumers, the results are:

Candle Exhibitor #1:

This exhibitor stated that they’re soy candles were handmade. I was told that their soy candles burned great had no soot or mushroom build up and had an awesome scent throw. Well, fortunately the exhibitor had several candles burning and I notice on their candles that the wick that was chosen had a lot of mushrooming and a little bit of soot build up and no scent throw unless your nose was directly above the flame. Speaking of flame, the flame on these candles was high and had a wild burn, which can be a fire hazard.

Candle Exhibitor #2:

This exhibitor informed us that she handmade her candles as well, but honestly the candles appeared to be machine poured because every candle look the same and had no imperfections. When candles are handmade properly, there are imperfections that actually make the candle perfect because it gives it a unique design. With handmade candles no two are alike. My business associate was asking various questions to see if the soy wax was compatible with essential oils. This vendor kind off “skated” around the question and wasn’t too sure. We were offered a sample of the candle where I later tested the candle. This particular votive candle was actually made using palm wax and then burned all the way down in 2 ½ hours. That’s the fastest burning candle I have ever seen. When this vendor found out that I was a candle maker, her eyes had gotten wide and at that point wanted to end the conversation. It’s interesting how one candle maker can be intimidated by another candle maker.

Candle Exhibitor #3:

Lastly, this exhibitor primarily advertised that their soy candles can also be used as body oil and that you can deep your finger in the candle while the candle is burning. Well, Kandle Indulgence highly suggests that you don’t put her finger or anything near and open flame serious injuries can occur. Yet again, my business associate asked the question concerning essential oils and/or what type of essential oils did their company use. She kept saying the fragrances come from flowers, but the question was what type of flowers, are these essential oils? Finally, after the exhibitor couldn’t fully explain the company’s product and was getting caught up in lies she basically said “I don’t know.” My question is “if you make the candles why wouldn’t the candle maker know where the fragrances come from and what type of fragrances is used?”

In the seven years that I’ve been making candles I have received positive and negative feedback always concerning the scent throw of my candles and I took those negative comments and turned into positive feedback by constantly studying and researching my product also doing a lot of testing. Although other research was conducted from other exhibitors the three mentioned above sums up the most important part of a business…know your products, business and to be honest to your consumers because you never know who you may meet.

Web Hosting Ecommerce Merchant Accounts

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Ecommerce is doing business online, the buying and selling of services and products over the web. It allows you to promote your goods or services, advertise promos, and tap into your sales targets in an easier way. Your clients will make their orders by browsing on your web site and send their payments through your merchant account, which in turn, transfers these payments to your bank account.

Thus, a permanent connection of your web site to the Internet is a basic requirement. This is what web hosting merchant accounts offer. They provide this complete and continuous link by allowing your site to occupy a space on their own web server, where all the information about your site is stored. Being connected to this server will enable you to acquire the all-time web accessibility, for it stays on for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

These web hosting merchant accounts will save you the cost of owning and maintaining the needed server. You just have to pay for their service. In looking for a web host, you need to consider their reliability and reputation history, the disk or storage space of their web server, and its capability of accommodating simultaneous access to your web site. Make sure there is a database server and scripting software, operating and web content management systems, and web interface.

And most significantly, make sure your web host offers payment processing capabilities such as SSL or Secure Sockets Layer, a communications protocol that provides security. This is very important since there are sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, that need to be encrypted to ensure that the information passes securely between you and your client, so as to prevent opportunity for fraud.

A web hosting ecommerce merchant account offers you the ability to accept all modes of payment in a faster, safer and more accessible means. It ensures you that all your payment transactions can be continuously processed anytime, may it be day or night, and that no piece of information in the communication and payment transaction process will be missed since your web site is online all the time.

Hard Drive Crash? The Essential Data Recovery Report

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Your worst nightmare just became a horrifying reality. You keep hearing that little voice in your head mockingly shout “you should have backed that stuff up” The voice keeps echoing throughout your head as you perform a quick inventory all of the important information that you just lost…..your client database, a years worth of e-mail, your entire inventory database, even your family photos.

Even worse, you’ve got a deposition in two-weeks and key information needed to help win the case were also lost. You quickly call a service technician and have them come over to check the computer out, only to hear the worst news of all….your data has been lost. When a hard drive crashes, it’s too late to worry about what you “should have done.”

Today data recovery is a multi-million dollar industry. The number of data recovery firms out there seems to exceed the number of fast food restaurants for the entire planet. These companies specialize in helping their clients retrieve data on anything from hard drives to flash-roms. In the following report, we will discuss what data recovery really is; the different types, the costs, and what you can realistically expect when it comes to getting your data recovered.

What To Do In The Event Of Data Loss?

Around 44% of all data loss is caused by hardware failure. It’s important to make sure that you immediately shut your system down if you suspect that hard drive has crashed. Don’t even try to go through the shutdown procedure, just pull the plug from the wall. Do not try to run off the shelf data recovery software or drive utilities. Many times these applications will assume the drive is functioning properly and will increase the risk of permanent data loss.

Types Of Hard Drive Failure

When we discuss data recovery in this report, we will primarily focus on issues surrounding hard drive failures; since these types of failures are most common. There are really two primary forms of failure in a hard drive, logical and physical. Logical failures are usually a result of file-system corruption. This can occur due to a virus, accidental deletion of key files or registry components, and in some cases even electro-static discharge. In most cases where a logical failure has occurred, the drive is still recognized by the system BIOS, but it will not boot. In most cases, your data should still be intact on the drive, even though it may appear to be inaccessible.

If the system BIOS does not detect the presence of the hard drive, then chances are a physical failure has occurred. Physical failures can result from a wide variety of causes. There are really two sub-categories for physical hard drive failures; mechanical and electronic. Mechanical failures usually result from a failure of the spindle motor. Spindle motor failure can result from excessive heat due to a bearing failure. The increased heat resulting from the bearing failure will expand the drive shaft and therefore seize the spindle motor. Suddenly, your drive will become inoperative. Occasionally, you will get a warning that something bad is about to happen. You may hear a loud whining, a grinding noise, even high-pitched screeches. If anything like this starts to occur, BACK UP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY.

Another physical issue that sometimes rears its ugly head is an electronic failure. If you look at a hard drive you will notice a circuit board on the bottom. This board is basically the brains of the drive, and it is where the computer interfaces to the hard drive. An electrical failure can occur unexpectedly at any time. Even brand new hard drives are not totally immune to having electrical failures. Sometimes it’s just a faulty component, sometimes it’s improper installation (i.e. electro-static discharge, grounding out the board, damaging circuitry during installation). It’s important to also keep your system clean and well ventilated, since excessive heat can damage the electrical components on the drive. If you have a system that is in a somewhat contained area, you may look at adding an additional 80mm fan to cool the internal components of the system, especially the hard drive. No other component of a computer works as much as the hard drive, and therefore it is vitally important not to overlook it when cooling issues arise.

How Is My Data Recovered?

One of the most often asked questions that customers ask is, “how do you get my data back?” Well, it’s really not black magic or rocket science. It’s just a matter of having the right tools and the knowledge necessary to know what to do, much like a surgeon performing heart by-pass surgery. Many prominent data recovery facilities have a large array of hardware, software and tools for recovering data.

Generally speaking when a hard drive is received by a data recovery firm, the first thing they do is evaluate it, and determine what recovery solution will be necessary. If the drive failure is a logical issue as mentioned earlier, then a scan of the drive will be performed to try and repair the file system corruption. Sometimes a partition can be repaired and the drive restored to the status that it was before the failure. If this is not possible, then a very low-level scan will be performed that essentially searches every sector of the hard drive for files. Once the files are located, they can then be copied to the media of choice, i.e. a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM or another hard drive. Logical recoveries can take up an enormous amount of time, especially if the drive is on the verge of physical failure. It’s not uncommon to allow for one day of scanning and a day for recovering the found files.

If the drive has suffered a physical failure, then the recovery procedure is quite a bit more challenging. As mentioned above, there are really two sub-categories of physical failure; mechanical and electronic. An important element in recovering data from a physical failure is having the necessary parts to get the drive functioning again. Unfortunately with hard drives if you have a 20GB Maxtor Hard Drive for example, then you will need another identical 20GB Maxtor Hard Drive for salvaging parts. In cases where the electronic circuit board has failed on the hard drive, then you have to have the exact same circuit board on hand in order to retrieve the necessary circuit components for replacement. Many times you cannot even exchange circuit board for circuit board. These repairs generally require soldering skills and a thorough knowledge of electronics to be successfully completed. You will most likely hear “Class100 Clean Room” thrown around a lot when talking to data recovery professionals. Simply stated, a Class100 Clean Room maintains exceptional air purity, and contains less than 100 airborne particles larger than 0.5 microns in each cubic foot of air. This is vital in protecting sensitive internal components of hard drives. Anytime a hard drive is having an invasive procedure performed on it, a Class100 clean room or better is needed.

The time frame for recovery is generally 5-10 business days for physical issues and 2-4 days for logical issues. Sometimes if components are not readily available, then it may take weeks to complete the recovery. Some firms offer expedite service and you definitely pay for this added attention.

What About Data Recovery Software

This is one area where you really do get what you pay for. Try to stay away from software in the $20-$60 range, since these utilities are generally very limited in what they can do. Also make sure that you NEVER and just to emphasize, NEVER EVER get data recovery software that writes anything at all to the damaged disk. You run the risk of overwriting data that may otherwise have been recoverable, but will be lost forever. If you are fairly computer savvy, then there are a few good data recovery software solutions available.

What To Look For When Shopping For Data Recovery

There’s an old saying, “you get what you pay for.” In most cases this is true. However, just because a company with a fancy website quotes you $3,500 for data recovery, does not mean that they are any better than a company that quotes you $1,500. Also, try to stay away from companies that want to charge $50-$300 for evaluating your drive. There has been a movement in the data recovery industry over the last couple of years to offer a number of free services. Most reputable data recovery companies will evaluate standard IDE drives free of charge; so don’t let the word “free” this or “free” that stop you. The data recovery market is quickly becoming saturated, and a company does not necessarily cheapen itself or lack expertise by offering free evaluations.

You will find as you shop around for data recovery that prices vary greatly. You will get quotes that range from $300 to $5,000 for standard hard drive recoveries. It’s not uncommon to literally get quotes that have at least a $1,500 high/low spread. We shopped one prominent data recovery company where we gave them specific indicators of a physical hard drive failure. We were eventually quoted a price range of $600 to $2,900 for the recovery. Many times this is a bait and switch type tactic. They get you to send in the drive with the low-end $600 price, then they let you know it’s going to cost $2,100 for the recovery. You end up being well under the $2,900 high-end price, but well over what other reputable companies would charge. Since most customers won’t go through the pain of having the drive sent back, only to have to send it out to another company, these bait and switch companies end up making huge profits off of unsuspecting customers.

Try to find a company that will give you an up front cost for either a logical or physical recovery. Most companies will be able to tell you within a couple hundred dollars the cost of a recovery. However, don’t misunderstand a company that gives you a price for two different procedures. For example, some companies will give you a price if the failure is logical and a price if the problem ends up being physical. We called one firm and were told that if the drive had a logical failure the price would be $400 and if it ended up being a physical issue the price would be $1,600. This is not a high/low spread as mentioned in the earlier example, this is simply quoting a price for two different types of recoveries.

On average you can expect to pay anywhere from $400 to $600 for logical recoveries, and $1,200 to $2,000 for physical recoveries on standard IDE hard drives. If you have RAID drives, SCSI, etc. depending on the configuration prices can be as high as $15,000. Remember, backup backup backup backup backup!!

Can My Data Be Recovered?

In most cases the answer to this question is yes. On average, the success rate for data recovery professionals is about 75-85%. However, there are times when the data is just lost, either due to extensive damage to the platter or unavailability of replacement parts.

How Do I Get Started?

If you have a hard drive that has crashed, the most important thing you can do is contact a data recovery professional immediately. Make sure you aren’t being charged an evaluation fee if you have a standard IDE hard drive. Most companies only charge evaluation fees for complex RAID and network server drives.

It is important to do your homework, call and talk with the companies. When you find one that you feel comfortable with, give them a chance. Your hardest job, may be finding data recovery firms that actually have someone available to answer the phones. Ask questions and be sure to have the following information available:

Size of the drive

Operating system (i.e. Windows 98, Windows XP, etc.)

Situation of failure (what happened just before the drive stopped working)

Is the drive recognized by the computer or not

Good luck in getting your data recovered, and make sure you always backup your important information on a daily basis.

Kabbalah Jewelry

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Amulets and good luck charms have existed since the dawn of history. Their purpose was to provide emotional security for people, success in their endeavors - mainly hunting, war, success in growing crops, overcoming illnesses - and, essentially, any and every good thing a person could want for one’s family and oneself. The tribal healers or wizards gave out the amulets. With the development of urban settlement and the changes in the belief patterns and religions, this role was passed on to religious priests and, in effect, it is they and people possessing similar special attributes as well, who still deal with this today. As was said, the amulet provides the person with emotional help, which is meant to operate on a subliminal level. The kabbalah amulet solves the issues of a person’s lack of confidence on two levels: the first being a lack of belief in one’s abilities, and the second being a lack of knowledge regarding the future.

One can distinguish between overt amulets (which can be displayed) and hidden amulets (which cannot be displayed). Another way to distinguish among amulets would be the division between those designed for a person and those designed for a place (a home or place of business). These amulets could be uniform - where anyone may purchase the same amulet - or they could be personal amulets, which can be made to order (each one tailor-made according to a person’s needs) by people with special attributes who are privy to the secret of their preparation. Unlike the many claimants who openly declare their knowledge, there are a few, modest persons who are really privy to the secret of amulet making. A final distinction would be between a shaped amulet and a written amulet. Most of the amulets today are of the written type.

According to Kabbalah, the letters created the world.
This indeed is a sentence that seems logical and clear to us, since without verbal communication we are unable even to move from our place. The story of the Tower of Babel is a famous one - when work on the tower was halted and the people dispersed the moment each had his own language and all communication collapsed.

However, each letter possesses its own unique, powerful energy.
Combining letters, words and sentences gives power according to the position and content of the words or letters.
Finding the letters and the words, and constructing sentences suitable for the amulet’s purpose, is the important secret of its composition.
An amulet can be written on almost anything, but materials that endure over time and are impervious to environmental conditions are preferable. The main power of the Kabbalah amulet is drawn from its written contents, but the writing surface itself has a value of its own, even if a lesser one.

The texts used by the amulet writers are mainly those of the Holy Scriptures such as the Bible, with the emphasis being on sentences from the Torah (Five Books of Moses), though also from Psalms and other books, and the texts of various prayers as well. There are those who use words of a certain meaning relevant to a topic using direct methods of writing (copying the entire text), or indirect, such as writing a word composed of the first or last letters of an entire sentence. There are ways to write a sentence with all the words joined in order to keep the amulet incomprehensible to any person.
Because it was God who created human beings and the world as well, therefore the paths to the wisdom of creation are common to man and the world. As a result, these codes provide aid and assistance to the person when they are integrated into the amulet.

It can be said that choosing a word or a sentence is done according to the type and purpose of the amulet. The names of angels in charge of the spheres appropriate to the content and purpose of the amulet are added to many amulets.

Amulets also vary by the purpose they fulfil.
Kabbalah-Corner offers a wide range of Amulets that apply for:

Kabbalah amulets for Health
Kabbalah amulets for Finding one’s soul mate
Kabbalah amulets for Financial success
Kabbalah amulets for Fertility

Special Tips On Saving Gas

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

These are unusual times and we need everyone. Our great nation
is coming together. I’m finding so many ways to help; money,
food, clothes. It’s going to affect all of us. So I want to
share some great tips on saving gas.

1. Car pool, take the bus, bike, walk. Car pools reduce travel
monotony and gas expense - all riders chip in to help you buy.
Conversation helps to keep the driver alert. Pooling also reduces
traffic congestion, gives the driver easier maneuverability and
greater “steady speed” economy. For best results, distribute
passenger weight evenly throughout car.

2. Avoid filling gas tank to top. Overfilling results in sloshing
over and out of tank. Never fill gas tank past the first “click”
of fuel nozzle, if nozzle is automatic.

3. Slow down and drive steady. Speeding up wastes fuel. Also
avoid tailgating - the driver in front of you is unpredictable.
Not only is it unsafe, but if affects your economy, if he slows
down unexpectedly.

4. Inflate all tires to maximum limit. Each tire should be
periodically spun, balanced and checked for out-of-round. When
shopping for new tires, get large diameter tires for rear wheels.
Radial designs are the recognized fuel-savers;check manufacturer’s
specifications for maximum tire pressures.

5. Avoid rough roads when possible. Because dirt or gravel rob
you of up to 30% of your gas mileage.

6. Buy gasoline at the coolest time of day. Early morning or late
evening is best. During these times gasoline is densest. Keep in
mind - gas pumps measure volumes of gasoline, not densities of
fuel concentration. You are charged according to “volume of
measurement”.

7. Don’t use your air conditioning. Auto air conditioners can
reduce fuel economy by 10% to 20%. Heater fan, power windows and
seats increase engine load; the more load on your engine, the
less miles per gallon.

8. Plan ahead. Combine your errands in the same area.

9. Keep your car tuned. Regular tune-ups ensure best economy; check
owner’s manual for recommended maintenance intervals. Special
attention should be given to maintaining clean air filters…
diminished air flow increases gas waste.

About Candida, Its Symptoms & Treatment

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Candida is a fungal infection affecting the moist external area of the body like mouth, nostril, in side folded skin and vagina basically of a parasitic fungus. There are many types of Candida fungus like Candida Parapsilosis, Candida Tropicalies, Candida vini and sub-types named after the infected areas like Cutaneous Candidasis, Thrush, Vaginal Candidiasis, Penile Candidiasis, Pulmonary Candidiasis, Esophagus Candidiasis, Invasive Candidiasis and the treatments for respective infections are identified.

Complications of Candidiasis are secondary conditions, symptoms, or other disorders that are caused by Candidiasis. Though there is no life treat in Candida patients, it is highly recommended for immediate medical treatment. The following symptoms are mentioned in various sources for Candidiasis includes Itchy skin rash, Skin inflammation, Small blisters, Armpit skin rash, Skin rash under breasts and Rash in skin folds. For oral thrush, White patches inside cheeks, White patches on tongue, White patches in throat.

However the symptoms of vaginal thrush and penile thrush are almost similar like chronic stage will have fluid discharge. In addition to the symptoms, it may be necessary to examine symptoms that may be caused by complications of Candidiasis. There are many medications are available both external and internal drugs, Creams, powder forms are available. Scientists and Dermatologists are concerned that the increasing use of antifungal drugs will lead to drug-resistant fungi. In fact, recent studies have documented resistance of Candida species to fluconazole, a drug used widely to treat patients with fungal diseases.

Altogether the cleanliness is the most important aspect for not getting any Candida infection. Medications used in the treatment for yeast infection should be kept away from children. Some times the yeast infection anti-fungal creams are recommended differently for mouth and vaginal use. After the treatment for yeast infection if the symptoms persist even after 7 days or return within 2 months see your doctor.

How Traffic Exchanges Promote Your Website

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Traffic Exchanges offer a great free way of promoting your
business. They should be included in your advertising arsenal
but make sure that you leverage your time effectively and you
don’t surf for hours for those advertising credits. Try to find
a traffic exchange program that will not hinder your normal
surfing behavior, while advertising your business, and you will
be one of the few people who maximize their time and effort with
this free marketing tool.

Some traffic exchange services will make your surfing experience
a bit more complex, since you would have to wait for a timer to
expire in order to be awarded credits, and while that timer
counts down you are forced to view another person’s website from
the network.

Some of these measures were taken by the traffic exchange
programs in an effort to minimize or eliminate cheating, as some
users have created ways to cheat the system by using software
programs that auto surf and earn them credits.

Typically, participants to traffic exchanges will surf the
Internet with a slight modification of how they normally would,
in an effort to collect credits.

The less departure from the normal surfing experience, the more
the webmaster will be willing to use that traffic exchange
program. Also, the less you force a user to view your website,
the more targeted they will be for that product or service. For
example, someone who reads a headline in a traffic exchange and
clicks on it to view the website is more targeted than someone
who views it because they are forced to wait for a timer to
expire.

Now that you have an overview of what traffic exchange programs
are, and how they work, lets have a look at their main benefits:

1. You can recruit affiliates

2. You can build a list.

3. They’re free to use

Almost all traffic exchange services are free, although you can
upgrade your membership to get additional benefits in some. This
means that someone with a low or no budget can quickly start
advertising their website for little or no cost.

4. Targeted Traffic (for Internet Marketing)

If your product is Internet marketing related then the traffic
you would receive to your website will be somewhat targeted
because they will be people who are also looking for ways of
increasing their online income and traffic.

To capture these names and add them to your email list have a
page designed to give out a freebie or a 5 part e-course in
exchange for an email address. You can then follow up with these
leads and sell them more stuff in the future.

If you have your own product and affiliate program, you can
recruit affiliates to sell your products for a commission. The
more people selling your products, the more passive income you
will make.

In conclusion, Traffic Exchange programs are services that are
used by webmasters to attract more traffic and to obtain more
exposure for their business.

Chin Na Fa: Skill of Catch and Hold

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Techniques of CHIN NA include a wide set of various movements: press and blows on vulnerable points, grappling, strangling, throws and so on. That set of movements (impacts on the enemy) allows to realize the following methods: “Separation (tearing) of muscles and sinews” (FENG JING), “Dislocating (breaking out) of bones and joints” (YU GU), “Suffocation” (BI QI) and “Impacting on points” (DIAN XUE). Also, those methods must be used skillfully, not just with brute force.

The introduction to the book by Liu Jin Sheng “CHIN NA FA: Skill of Catch and Hold” (Shanghai, 1936) says: “Initially this skill had several names: FENG JING FA – “The technique of separation (breaking) of muscles and sinews”; DI TANG FA – “Methods of combat when lying on the ground”; YU GU FA – “The technique of dislocation (breaking out) of bones and joints” and CHIN NA FA – “The technique of catch and hold.” At present the name CHIN NA FA has predominantly become established. Totally, there are 72 methods. The ancient manuscript calls this skill DI SHA SHOU – “Devil’s Hand”.
Specialists in WU SHU say there are 36 “big” and 72 “small” points on a human body. 36 positions, 72 positions and 108 positions (techniques) are also marked out in CHIN NA FA. That traditional division has been maintained till now since long time when our ancestors created the theory of CHIN NA on the basis of the conception 36 TIAN GANG and 72 DI SHI . But actually, that is only a tribute to tradition that has no great practical significance.

It is recorded in Shaolin Treatises on the Pugilistic Art:

“The beginnings of the Shaolin art CHIN NA trace back to many centuries. Inmost GONG FU of secret methods of CHIN NA is passed down from one generation to another to attain the highest perfection in the martial art.

When you find yourself face to face with the enemy armed with a “short” weapon, fully rely upon methods of CHIN NA and your vision. Position of the enemy, his body, his face, how he stands and what he is going to do – everything must be clearly sized up. When you understand intentions of the enemy, rely upon your own force, seize an opportunity, alternate “hard” and “soft” techniques.

If two outstanding fighters encountered in a combat, like a tiger against a tiger, the outcome of the combat depends on a measure of skill in CHIN NA. He is in the process of transforming, so do I, closely following him. Blows and grips follow continuously, without a moment’s respite. You see an opening and needle your way into the vulnerable spot, clear a passage and rush forward.

If you encounter a villain, make a grip (CHIN) at first, then use the technique (FA), and you will be able to exercise a control (NA). An arm of flesh and bone can deprive even an iron man of courage. Hard to defend oneself against deft techniques, no defense against skilful finger efforts.”
