Your Preferences — as Unique as Your Fingerprints

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Would life be different, if you believed that everything you love and enjoy is just right for you?

What would happen if you knew yourself so well you could say with confidence, “No thank you, I prefer…”

How would you look at others, if you really understood that their choices are perfect for them?

The Law of Attraction teaches us to recognize our personal preferences by noticing how things feel and asking ourselves, “Which feels better? This or that?” When we take the time to notice our feelings, we learn about ourselves in a way that leads to great personal freedom and happiness.

Before I learned about the Law of Attraction and how I attract people, situations and opportunities in complete accord with my vibration (vibes), I tried to live by a set of standards or principles. I remember a time when I asked my pastor if he could give me a list of these principles so I could make sure I was living the right way. I did everything I could to be the perfect mother, dutiful housewife and selfless Christian. I thought that by conforming to what other people expected, I would become happy too. I was NOT a happy, joyful person. I was a person in great emotional and eventually physical, pain.

But the Law of Attraction taught me to notice when something doesn’t feel good, because that feeling of discomfort is an indicator that something is NOT good for me. Anything out of alignment with who I am and all the purposes I came to fulfill will NOT feel good. WOW! I had been placing my hand on a hot stove and trying to feel comfortable with the pain. I’d lived with chronic emotional and physical pain for so long that I was becoming numb to it. (A third degree burn is painless because all the nerve endings are burned away.)

One day, the truth finally dawned on me: Only I can choose what is best for me. No one can tell me what is good for me–only I can tell. And the way I tell is by noticing how everything feels, then looking for the thought, answer, idea or thing that feels best.

“Good feels good. Bad feels bad.” -Abraham-Hicks
Knowing and honoring my personal preferences causes me to fulfill ALL my life purposes–naturally. Everything I set out to do during this lifetime is already programmed within me. The way I ‘read the program’ is to notice what brings me great joy and follow that lead. In fact, this is the shortest and easiest way to find fulfillment. Before I learned about the Law of Attraction, I felt like I had lost 30 years of my life by trying to endure a poor marriage. But within 5 years of applying the Law of Attraction in the way described in this article, I felt caught up on life. About two years ago, I had a profound realization: “Today, I am exactly where I would be, if I had done the first 55 years of my life differently.” That is a GREAT feeling!

Now I tell my students: “Your personal preferences are as unique to you as your fingerprints. Only you can do certain things in this life and your preferences are there to guide you into actually living life in the most joyfully satisfying way!”

What about you? Are you seeing yourself in this light? Have you wondered why you don’t fit in with the crowd? Are you ready to accept yourself and your preferences as being right for YOU?

3 Popular Wreck Diving Sites in Britain

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

While the mention of scuba diving generally brings to mind the image of some exotic tropical dive locale, the United Kingdom has a number of exciting dive spots just waiting to be explored by divers like you. If you have no issues with cold water diving, the following destinations will leave you breathless. Or something like that…

One of the best dive sites in the U.K. is located in Scotland, in the Sound of Mull. The Sound of Mull is located between the Isle of Mull and the Morven Peninsula. It is an extremely popular destination for U.K. divers because it offers an unparalleled range of diving in very reasonable conditions. The area is cursed with bad weather, which has resulted in countless shipwrecks over the years. Most dives in the area are launched from Tobermory, Lochaline, or Oban. The Hispania is, by far, one of the most popular wrecks in the area, due to the fact that it is still relatively intact and awash in marine life. It is shallow enough to get a good long dive, and visibility is generally very good.

Another phenomenal dive spot is located on the south coast of England, in the waters of Sussex. The Alaunia, a steamship sunk by a German mine in 1916, is one of the more popular diving destinations on the south coast. Although the wreck is considerably broken up, there are still significant parts of the ship left intact. Be on the lookout for a series of portholes to help navigate the site. If you can manage to find the bridge area, you will undoubtedly be pleased to find the anchor still hanging from its chain. The size of the wreck is overwhelming to some degree, and it would take a few separate dives to explore the entire ship. Shoals of bib, spider crabs, and massive lobsters are sure to keep you entertained. See if you can spot a dead man’s fingers while you are down there.

Another extremely popular dive is located near Plymouth, where the wreck of the steamship Maine found its final resting place. It can be found approximately a mile off Bolt Head. It was highly noticeable for a number of years, as the masts of the ship broke the surface of the water. The wreck has since been cleared of its mast, with most of the debris swept to its port side. It rests in water that is approximately 30 meters deep. The ship was torpedoed in March of 1917 and, after a noble rescue effort, came to rest in waters within easy reach from Salcombe. While this would be an amazing exploration for any diver, it is not recommended for novice divers due to the strong current. There is a good representation of undersea life, and this destination is sure please anyone who visits.

Ian Scott is an experienced diver, and he has recently discovered the joys of cold water diving. He is also a contributing writer for thescubaguide.com – an excellent website with extensive information about wreck diving, dive planning, equipment and more.

What is Organic Farming?

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Organic farming is the production of food using all natural
methods - avoiding all synthetic chemicals and genetically
modified organisms. Its’ core philosophy is that of
sustainability or ‘zero impact’. The organic farmer seeks to
leave the earth in its’ natural state after the harvest.

The focus of organic methods is on soil quality. Crops are grown
without artificial fertilizers and pesticides, and livestock is
reared free of drugs and hormones. Proponents of organic food
believe it produces food with higher quality and nutritional
value than conventional chemical-based methods.

Many countries including the US and the EU have certification
programs to control the use of the term “Organic”. This benefits
the consumer by ensuring best practice has been followed. This
varies from region to region but includes things like the
minimum length of time a field can be left free of chemicals
before it is allowed to be used for organic farming.

There are many different styles of organic food production but
they all adhere to the same principles:

* no artificial fertilizers or drugs * no genetically modified
organisms * prevention of soil depletion * ‘biodiversity’ - the
growing of a range of crops not just a single species.

One recent researcher found that vegetables in the 1950s
contained more than eight times as many trace elements as modern
crops, which he attributed to the excessive use of nitrate
fertilizers. You can read all the latest research at
http://www.ge-free.com/

Organic farming has come about as a consumer reaction against
the chemical based methods that have been used so widely in 20th
century food production. Really though it is simply a formalised
definition of traditional agriculture as it has been practiced
for thousands of years before 20th century chemicals were
invented.

So far, organic farming has been limited to small businesses
growing for local markets. Organic farming methods are very
expensive compared to their chemical counterparts, and the
production yields are low when compared to ‘conventional’
farming.

Consumers of course are willing to pay a premium for the
improved flavour and nutrition value of organic produce but it
remains a premium market. This will change as more large scale
organic producers enter production.

Most countries now have ‘all organic’ type food stores in the
larger cities. So long as there are people who enjoy healthy
living and an alternative to the chemical ridden norm, these
businesses will continue to flourish.

60 Minutes To Clear Goals

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

I think that most people would agree that the people who have goals are more successful than those who do not have any.

I often talk about leadership and management. Leadership is about doing the right things while management is about doing things right. Often when we study time management, we study efficiency (doing things right) and make the assumption that we have the effectiveness (leadership) solved.

The first step in any time management system should be to work on goals and as such, I use the following 60 Minute Goal Setting Exercise.

Step 1: at the top of a blank piece of paper write down “values” and then spend 10 to 15 minutes writing down everything that you value. There is a great website: www.stevepavlina.com/ that has a list of several hundred values to start your mind thinking in the right direction. After the time is up, stop doing this and move to Step 2.

Step 2: at the top of a blank piece of paper write down “lifetime goals”. This is where you can dream; for example, what places would you like to visit; what experiences would you like to have; what would you like to accomplish within your lifetime. This might include traveling to Australia; getting a university degree; living in an X square foot house, etc. There are no rules to this brainstorming – simply make a list.

I have done this goal setting exercise many times and I tend to use the same list of lifetime goals and add to the list each time I do the exercise.

Step 3: at the top of a blank piece of paper write down what you would do if you had six months to live. This part of the exercise really came home to me this week when one of my close friends died at 36 years old. Some of us may have only six months to live; however, we may not know it yet. List everything that you would do if you had only six months to live. Part of the purpose of this exercise that I found works well for me is that it brings the truly important into focus. Often I find things that I would do if I had only six months to live that are not listed on my life time goals.

Step 4: at the top of a blank piece of paper write down your goals for this year. After doing the first three steps, you will find this step much easier than the others. These are the goals to focus on NOW.

This total exercise will only take an hour. An hour spent clarifying your goals can save you hundreds of hours.

Vitamins and minerals that are depleted by the prescription drugs you take

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

In today’s world every time somebody comes down with a cold they turn to prescription drugs, this might not be the wisest choice, if we are concerned with living a long and healthy life. In this fast paste world we want a quick fix, being down with a cold or disease like cancer is unacceptable, that’s why most of us will turn to a prescription drug. Little did we know that as we take these prescription drugs they deplete our body of essential vitamins, minerals and phyto-nutrients our body needs to operate properly.
Safeguarding out bodies against vitamin and mineral deficiencies should be our number one priority. The following guidelines can help if you are on of the 20 million people out there using prescription drugs.

Calcium

Calcium is the first mineral that can be depleted by taking prescription drug. These drugs include diuretics such as Bumex, Demadex, Diuril, and Lasix, as well as, bone building drugs like Fosamax and anti-inflammation steroids Cortef and cortone can be deplete calcium in the body. You can help prevent calcium deficiency by eating foods rich in calcium. Foods rich in calcium are Kale, Cabbage, Dairy, and broccoli, if you do not consume several servings a day of these vegetables you might consider taking a calcium supplement.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 is an enzyme vital to the creb’s cycle (Energy production cycle in the body), if you are taking cholesterol medication Statins such as Lipitor, Lescol, Mevacor, Pravachol, or Zocor you will be at risk of Coenzyme Q10 depletion. Also, Sulfonylureas drugs such as Amaryl, DiaBeta, and Glucotrol for diabetics, you can be at risk. Eating oods high in coenzyme Q10 can help prevent COQ10 deficiency. The foods containing CoQ10 are Mackerel, red beets, sardines and organ meats, if you do not consume several servings of these meats and vegetables you might consider taking additional Coenzyme Q10 supplements available at any health food store.

Folic Acid

Folic Acid is a B Vitamin vital to both men and women but especially women in child bearing ages. If you are taking cholesterol meds, pain relief medications or diabetic medication such as Questran, Welchol, Celebrex, and Glucophage you may be at risk of Folic Acid depletion. The following are Foods high in Folic Acid. Broccoli, peas, beans, leafy greens, oranges and whole grains all have a good amount of folic acid in them. Folic Acid is relatively inexpensive you can find it at any health food store in 400mcg and 800mcg doses.

Magnesium

Magnesium is vital for muscle relaxation and bone building, if your taking diuretics bone building or steroidal anti-inflammation drugs you might be at risk of magnesium depletion. Foods high in magnesium are leafy greens, lean meat, beans, nuts whole grains, and seafood. Recent studies have suggested that 40% of the population are low in magnesium already, taking prescription drugs that delete magnesium can put one at risk for disease related to magnesium deficiency.

Potassium

Potassium is needed for proper nerve and muscle function. Also, potassium is essential for proper heart function. Prescription drugs that reduce potassium in the body are diuretics that reduce excess fluid and reduce blood pressure, Levodopa that is for parkinsons disease, and Steroidal anti-inflammation drugs. The list of foods high in potassium are as follows: bananas, dates, brown rice, garlic, nuts, avocados, and spinach. You can also find potassium in your local vitamin store usually selling at 99mg per capsule.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is the next vitamin under attack, essential for proper eye development and immune system function, Vitamin A can be depleted by bile acid sequestrants, steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and Xenical. Xenical, a fat blocker, can also affect vitamin D and vitamin E. Foods high in vitamin A are as follows: Fish COD and SALMON, Liver and Dairy.

Thiamin (B-1)

Thiamin (B-1) is involved in numerous body functions, including: nervous system, muscle functioning and carbohydrate metabolism to name a few. Drugs that may reduce B-1 in the body are Antibiotics that help fight infections and diuretics. Foods high in B-1 and other B Vitamins are nuts and whole grains. You can find single B vitamins or B complexes at your local health food store. B vitamins are vital for proper stress management in the body as well they are essential keeping your body healthy and taken daily can help prevent drug related deficiencies.

Riboflavin (B-2)

Riboflavin (B-2) is required for cell growth and release of energy, formation of red blood cell, and synthesis of antibodies. Drugs that can delete riboflavin is Elavin for migraines. Foods high in Riboflavin are Dairy, lean meat, broccoli, and whole grains. B-2 can be found at your local Vitamin Store.

pyridoxine (B-6)

Vitamin B6 helps the body process protein and carbohydrates in food and helps produce hemoglobin (red blood cells). High cholesterol medications like bile acid sequestrants and steroid anti-inflammation drugs delete B-6 in the body. Foods high in Vitamin B-6 are Fish, leafy greens, bananas, and potatoes.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a great antioxidant to protect your body from free radical damage, helps strengthen blood vessels and reduce the incident of bruising when you bump your arms and legs on something. Diuretics and steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs deplete the body of Vitamin C, if you are taking these types of drugs make sure you consume lots of broccoli, citrus, potatoes, tomatoes and strawberries. Additional supplementation of vitamin C can help as well. Vitamin C can be found at any health food store.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is important for strong bones and teeth and recent studies suggest Vitamin D may even help fight some kinds of cancer. If you’re taking barbiturate sedatives like Butisol and Phenobarbital for anxiety or insomnia or blood pressure and steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs you could be at risk for disease involving vitamin D depletion. Sunlight is the primary way our bodies produce vitamin D and with our fast life styles nobody has time to lay in the sun for 30min a day, if you live in the north you receive very little vitamin D from the sun. Supplementing Vitamin D is essential for optimal health, available in 400IU and 1000IU doses.

Zinc

Zinc is essential for proper immune system function, hair, skin and nail formation. Taking anti-acids like Pepcid, prilosec, tagamet and zantec, also diuretics, and steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs will deplete your body of the essential mineral zinc. Zinc is found in lean meat and seafood, also can be purchased in 10mg – 100mg doses in your local vitamin store.

These are only a few of the essential vitamin and minerals that prescription drugs deplete from the body. It is important to eat your fruits and vegetables with every meal of the day. Most Americans do not eat the daily recommended fruits and vegetables required to stay healthy so alternative vitamin supplements are needed more and more every day. Biochemists have found that the nutritional values of fruits and vegetables have been steadily declining over the past 40 – 50 years due to the fast growing varieties the farmers are growing today. If you do not consume the recommended servings of Fruits and Vegetables consider taking a multivitamin supplement every day.

If you’re not currently on a prescription drug and considering taking one please consult your doctor about all the known side effects and health issues that might result form taking the drug remember knowledge is power.

Train All Energy Pathways: Aerobic, Anaerobic and Anaerobic Lactate

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Train the anaerobic, anaerobic lactate and aerobic energy
pathways for superior conditioning performance… Not just one
energy pathway for “specialized” conditioning.

To develop superior conditioning you must train the anaerobic,
anaerobic lactate and aerobic energy pathways… not just one
energy pathway at the expense of the others.

There are three energy pathways used to provide energy for
activity… one aerobic and two anaerobic.

Aerobic means in the presence of oxygen… and any activity that
is performed at a low to moderate intensity for more than 90
seconds, allowing oxygen to release energy through metabolism,
is usually called an aerobic activity.

The benefits of aerobic activity are…

Increased Cardiovascular Function Decrease in Body Fat

Well, that sounds pretty good, but the negatives of excessive
aerobic training are…

Decreased Muscle Mass Decreased Strength Decreased Power
Decreased Speed Decreased Anaerobic Capacity

Anaerobic means in the absence of oxygen… and any activity
that is performed at a medium to high intensity for less than 2
minutes, where energy is derived without oxygen, is usually
called an Anaerobic activity.

There are two anaerobic energy pathways…

The Anaerobic System (ATP-CP) is where energy is derived from
the re-synthesis of Adenosine Tri-Phosphate (ATP) from
Creatine/Phosphate (CP) until the stores are depleted… about
5-7 seconds.

The Anaerobic Lactate System (Glycolytic) happens after the (CP)
stores have been depleted where the body resorts to the
breakdown of glucose for energy.

This results in the production of lactate and hydrogen ions…
ultimately leading to fatigue.

The benefits of anaerobic activity are…

Increased Cardiovascular Function Decrease in Body Fat Increased
Muscle Mass Improved Strength Improved Power Improved Speed
Increased Aerobic Capacity

When I look at the differences between the benefits of Aerobic
and Anaerobic Training… I often wonder why the vast majority
of Commercial Fitness Programs advocate Aerobic training almost
exclusively while completely ignore training the Anaerobic
energy pathways.

After all, you will perform how you train!

Are the majority of activities that you perform in sport, work
or life long, continuous aerobic activities… or short bursts
of medium to high intensity anaerobic activity followed by rest?

I think that it is pretty clear… long, continuous aerobic
activity will not prepare you for the majority of activities you
perform, and can even decrease performance in certain physical
abilities over time.

Short, intense Anaerobic training is the way to go to get the
most positive benefits for performance improvement… but
remember that it is not exclusive.

You will naturally flow between all three of these energy
pathways.

This is very important, you need a solid aerobic base before you
can benefit from the more intense anaerobic activities… so you
should build up your aerobic base before attempting anaerobic
activities.

I know what you are thinking… “I was told that aerobic
training was the best way to lose fat.”

Well, you will lose fat through aerobic training… but you will
also lose hard earned muscle and physical abilities.

That is not something you want to do on your path to over-all
fitness excellence.

After all, the reason you should want to reduce unneeded,
unwanted fat in the first place is to improve performance… so
why reduce fat at the cost of performance improvement?

You will also lose fat through anaerobic energy pathway
training… but you will also gain useful muscle and improve
physical abilities.

Furthermore, intense activity will keep the metabolism working
hours after you stop the activity… and the useful muscle you
gain will use resources from food for their maintenance instead
of being converted into fat.

Now, that sounds more like it!

How to Increase Your Copywriting Success

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Take a look at your prospecting list, if you have one. Where did
all those names come from?

Most likely they’re a hodge podge of names from a hodge podge of
sources…with few added to your list solely on the criteria
that they’re especially good leads.

Now ask yourself how successful your clients would be if their
lists were compiled in such an unscientific manner?

When you consider that the single most important element of a
direct mail campaign is the list (followed closely by the offer,
and THEN the copy), it becomes painfully apparent that a sloppy
list is a liability indeed!

So how do you go about creating a solid list of quality
prospects that you can mine for years to come?

There are some methods you can use and sources you can tap, and
I reveal a few of the best here. However, It always boils down
to looking in the right places for your particular specialty.

MY FAVORITE STARTING PLACE

Roughly half of my coaching students are new copywriters and
when it’s time to share my list building strategies with them, I
always introduce them to Who’s Mailing What,
http://www.whosmailingwhat.com/, a rich online archive of more
than 130,000 direct mail packages collected from more than 7,000
companies since 1994.

For about $30 per year, you can go into the archive and
literally see “who’s been mailing what,” which can be a real
boon for copywriters who specialize in the dozens of categories
- publishing, financial, collectibles, technology, and more -
covered by WMW.

For instance, I specialize in software. And while there are more
than 7,300 software companies in the U.S., I need only 500 to
keep busy. So which 500 should they be? Well, the BEST 500 of
course…the 500 that I know are direct mailers…the 500 that I
know are financially stable…the 500 that I know are well
respected and trustworthy.

When I started compiling my list, I mined Who’s Mailing What to
discover the names of software companies that had mailed over
the past two years. As “sure mailers,” these companies became
the richest names on my list, and remain so today.

OTHER GREAT PLACES TO LOOK

Nearly every large industry has an association, and most
associations have member lists. To get your hands on the list
you often need to join the association, but unless the price is
really exorbitant, it’s usually worth it. Remember, time is
money in the freelancer’s world, so the faster you can put
together your list, the faster you can market to it.

The library is another place to look for lists. In addition to
my “sure mailers,” I added the world’s most profitable software
companies to my list, tracked down at the local library in the
Computer and Software section of the Dunn and Bradstreet Gale
Industries Handbook.

I completed my goal of assembling 500 strong names by surfing
the Internet in search of newsletters, Web sites, and
publications that serve the software market. There I found lists
like “The Top 50 Software Venture Capital Investments,” which
listed software companies that had recently been infused with
millions of dollars each, in venture capital.

SOME STRONG SOURCES FOR GENERALISTS

Although I believe that every business freelancer should carve
out a niche for him or herself, many start out as generalists.
If you fit this category, you’ll find some excellent
list-building sources at the library.

Chuck Thompson, one of my early coaching students, discovered
the “Mail Order Business Directory” at his Chicago-area library.
It lists over 5,000 names, addresses, and basic facts about U.S.
firms doing business by mail.

Library sources I used in my early days of freelancing included
the “Standard Directory of Advertisers” and “Standard Directory
of Advertising Agencies.” Also known as “the Red Books” by
industry insiders, you should be able to find them at any main
library; I’ve had less luck finding them at the local level (and
they’re too expensive for most freelancers to buy).

The “Standard Directory of Advertisers” contains information on
over 24,000 U.S. and international advertisers who each spend
more than $200,000 annually on advertising. Each listing
includes advertising expenditures by media, contact information,
address, and more.

The “Standard Directory of Advertising Agencies” contains
detailed profiles of nearly 13,500 U.S. and international
advertising agencies, including accounts represented by each
agency, fields of specialization, contact information, and much
more. These directories are truly exciting sources of
information for the freelancer who recognizes the value of smart
targeting.

Finally, you never know what you’ll come up with while searching
the Internet. After helping dozens of coaching students build
their niche market list, I have a folder full of rich places to
look for high quality names.

Compiling your own personal prospect list is never fast or easy,
but there is a silver lining. And that is that no other
copywriter will be marketing to the same exact list that you
are. So do your homework and make your list as strong as it can
be. Because most of your success will flow from your list, it
pays to make it as powerful as it can be.
