9 Secrets of Successful Shop Management

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Profitable shops are profitable for a reason. Often times it may seem like magic, however to those ‘in the know’, it’s just good old fashioned common sense…

Here are 9 of the most common sense ‘secrets’ to successful shop management:

1. Ensuring Sufficient Capital

The number one reason for business failure is running out of money. Smart shop owners crunch the numbers before starting their venture or expanding one. They take a hopeful, yet realistic view of the way things might play out and ensure sufficient money to cover the lean periods.

2. Accounting For Your Business

Smart shop owners know that the numbers speak volumes. They regularly visit with, and discuss details with their accountant. They monitor their bank accounts closely and keep track of their accounting systems. If they’re running a computerized system, they don’t rely blindly on the computer systems and have various checks and balances in place to validate the data.

3. Buddies With The Bank

The smart shop owner knows that the time to forge strong and positive relationships with the bank manager is before they need the bank’s services. They also realize that this pre-emptive approach allows them the chance to present the best image to the bank manager prior to any future meeting. Bank managers can sense financial distress and without any prior history for them to recall, the meeting may well not go as expected.

4. Forging Intelligent, Selective Alliances

In business there is the generally accepted rule that “many hands make light work.” Conversely “too many cooks spoil the broth” and unless some care and consideration is taken when working together, the careless shop owner may end up with more trouble than it was all worth. A smart shop owner knows that although a ‘friend’ might be an easy hire or an easy business partner, they may not be the best choice in the long run.

5. Keeping A Close Eye On The Competition

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer… Okay, a little ‘cloak and dagger’ maybe, but the smart shop owner knows that knowing oneself is only half the battle. A smart owner also keeps a very close watch on their competition. They realize that competition is good for business – not bad, and that healthy competition stimulates business rather than repressing it. Also, the smart shop owner knows that by watching their competition they can learn their business strategy, their sales strategy, their pricing strategy, their advertising strategy and whole lot more.

6. Paying Their Taxes

The smart shop owner pays their taxes. They accept that it is part of business and factor it in to their overall business model. Instead of focusing on clawing back a few pennies here and there, the smart business owner focuses on building more wealth, they have a positive viewpoint not a negative one.

7. Managing Their Cash Flow & Receivables

Just as ensuring sufficient capital is necessary to start or grow a business, sufficient capital is required to operate a business. Smart shop owners know this and keep a very tight reign on their receivables. Smart business owners know that sales do not necessarily equal financial success - collecting the payment for those sales equals financial success.

8. Diversifying Their Risk & Exposure

The ‘never put your eggs in one basket’ is second nature to the smart shop owner. They diversify their risk and their revenues wherever possible. The smartest shop owners realise there is a situation they need to avoid called “effective control”. This is where a single revenue stream becomes responsible for more than 15% to 20% of the overall company revenue. In this instance the control is no longer in the hands of the shop owner, but in the lap of the client!

9. Intelligent & Results Oriented Marketing

Smart shop owners know that throwing advertising ‘out there’ is not the way to go. They know that advertising is all about sales and that all advertising is really just like a paper-based sales person. Ultimately this silent salesperson is accountable and responsible and the smart shop owner manages it that way.

A Fun Baby Shower Game That Everyone Will Enjoy

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Some of the most memorable moments of a baby shower for the guests are the fun baby shower games that are played. Many a hostess could tell you that the same games get used at almost every baby shower. So, finding a unique and fun baby shower game becomes important if you want to make your party different.

Here is a hilarious, original and easy game to play for your party - it is called “How Prego Can You GO!!

It goes like this: Before the shower, buy about 200 medium-sized balloons. Then, either borrow or buy 4-5 XXL shirts and 4-5 pairs of XXL pants (you will need one shirt and 1 pant for each team, so if you only have 2 or 3 teams just buy 2 or 3 pairs of clothing).

How to Play: During the baby shower, divide the guests into teams of 4 or 5 people. Have each team choose one team member who is going to be “pregnant”. Then give each team one large shirt and one pair of large pants, and about 50 balloons. When you say “Go!” the “pregnant” team member of each team will put the shirt and pants on as quick as they can, while their teammates start to blow up the balloons. When the “pregnant” one is “dressed”, teammates will begin stuffing the inflated balloons as fast as they can into the shirt and pants of the “pregnant” one. After 3 minutes, everyone must stop stuffing balloons. The winning team is the one that has the MOST “pregnant” team-member (the one with the most stuffed inflated balloons). Don’t pull the balloons out to count, though! The fun has just started! The best (and most hilarious) way to count the balloons is to get a long pin or needle and pop the balloons, one by one while everyone is watching. This can be such a riot! You can pop all the balloons in the pants first and then have a very “pregnant” and/or well developed mommy! This game gets everyone involved and laughing.

(One warning about this game: Make sure the one who is chosen to be “pregnant” on each team should have their skin covered (e.g. no bare midriffs, low cut necklines, etc). Otherwise, it might sting their bare skin each time a balloon is popped. And be careful to not poke the “pregnant” team member with the pin.)

This is a very fun baby shower game that will be a definite highlight of the party and a memorable event for everyone.

What is Forex Trading?

Monday, June 11th, 2007

FOREX, (FOReign EXchange market) or FX, is an international exchange market where stocks and shares are not traded, but currency. The return for the investor is not in the value of the currency per se, but rather the relative exchange value of one currency against another currency.

Therefore, Forex trading is always expressed in pairs such as Euro/US Dollar (EUR/USD) or US Dollar/Japanese Yen (USD/JPY).

By simultaneously buying and selling pairs of currencies, the investor, or speculator, hopes to profit from a favorable exchange rate change. Unlike the American stock exchanges, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation System (NASDAQ), Forex trading is more predictable than stocks.

One strategy that the Forex investor uses is a technique that stems from the assumption that all information about the market and a particular currency’s future fluctuations is found in the price chain. In other words, an investor simply looks at what has happened to that currency in the recent past, and predicts that the small fluctuations will generally continue just as they have before. Another strategy for the Forex investor is to analyze the country of the currency’s economy, political situation, and other possible rumors. The investor can also anticipate such things as political unrest or change that will also have an effect on the market.

Forex is the largest financial market in the world handling between 1.5 and 1.9 trillion US dollars a day. The combination of rather constant but small daily fluctuations in currency prices, create an environment which attracts investors. Because of the the liquidity of the market, unlike some rarely traded stock, traders are able to open and close positions within a few seconds as there are always willing buyers and sellers.

What are the risks?

Because of the sheer scale of the Forex Market, it ensures greater price stability and greater leverage. With built-in protection in the form of automatic limits for buying and selling, safety margins, and other risk protection measures, the likelihood of ending up in the red even when the Forex market is volatile is infinitely reduced. Furthermore, because of its’ size, it is near impossible for a single investor to significantly affect the price of a major currency.

However, all Forex traders should note that the market is one of the most liquid around and subject to strong currency trends. While leverage figures of 100:1 are often times quoted, without adequate risk protection in place the pendulum swing between profit and loss can be dramatic. Even veteran Forex traders can be caught out from time to time and take large hits. With this type of investor speculation, the golden rule must be: don’t risk more than what you can afford to lose.

Are We Too Competitive?

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Are we too competitive?

Are you a little competitive? Would you consider yourself a RAGING MANIAC when it comes to a good competition? Welcome to Competitors Anonymous.

You are competitive if you compete as you drive on the freeway–you know, you pick a car in front of you and pretend it is the Indy 500. You are competitive if you believe that the rule in driving is simply to catch up to the car in front of you!

You know you are a raging maniac when you find yourself trying to take down your eight-year old in a game of GUESSTURES. We have family game night at my house once a week and my husband has actually banned me from playing for a month because of what he called, EXCESSIVE CELEBRATION.

Okay so maybe I shouldn’t have pushed her so hard when my team got the word, “HUDDLE!” I get a little out of control when I play games. But it’s all in fun, right?

They say men are typically more competitive than women, but I think we just compete differently.

Last weekend I entered a Tae Kwon Do sparring competition–well, a friend of mine had signed up and when she became ill, she asked if I would take her spot so she wouldn’t lose the registration money. What’s a friend to do? I couldn’t see her lose forty dollars!

I thought, “How hard could this be?” I had been taking lessons for a couple years and enjoyed the exercise in the sparring matches. It would be fun!

WELL…no one told me that they are out for blood in these competitions!

As I sat stretching before my match I watched this young “man boy,” maybe eighteen or twenty, throwing punches and kicking to warm up and he looked MAD! He looked over to his opponent and said under his breath, “Prepare to die!”

DIE? What was he talking like this for…it’s just a friendly game right? Wasn’t this all about exercise and FUN? I wanted to go out there and spank him or at least put him in time out for poor sportsmanship, but thought they might throw me out.

I leaned over to a woman sitting next to me and whispered, “Who is he? Inigo Montoya from the Princess Bride? Here to avenge his father’s death? My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die!” She started laughing and said she loved that movie. We were like the old Siskel and Ebert duo. Chatting about movies.

I was in the middle of telling her that I had watched The Princess Bride at least 50 times, when all of a sudden, my coach pulled me back and said, “She is not your friend! She is the enemy! That is who you will be fighting in a few minutes!”

Enemy?! What is everyone talking crazy for? This is just for FUN!

And at that moment, the young man boy threw a kick to his opponent’s head and it landed right on his nose! Blood was spurting out everywhere and by the sound of it, it was broken for sure.

Oh my goodness, what did I sign up for? Was this some secret underground fight club and only one person was supposed to come out alive? Did my husband secretly arrange for me to be here when he was out of town to teach me a lesson? I’m not that competitive!

I started praying. Please don’t let me bleed too much. I just got this uniform and blood is so hard to get out. Lord I will be nice when we play card games at home from now on!

I looked over at my secret movie pal, Siskel, now with fear in my face. Luckily she had the same look in her eyes.

Fortunately for both of us, there is a lot less rage, stamina, and oxygen for that matter, in the over forty women’s division.

We both went out to the middle. We shook hands and bowed. When they said “Sijak” which means “begin” in Korean, but always reminds me of Pat Sajak and makes me want to buy a vowel, we began.

Punch, kick, punch…huff, puff, huff puff. Kick kick kick. Whew, huff, puff. I don’t know what it looked like from the side, but it definitely didn’t feel like the ultimate fighting match we had just seen before us.

All of a sudden, Siskel threw a pretty solid punch at my chest, and then she immediately said, “Oh, sorry!”

I busted up. I laughed at the thought of us, two ladies who should be exchanging movie reviews and recipes for desserts, out here punching and kicking each other and then apologizing for it. I laughed so hard, my mouthpiece came flying out onto the mat and then she started laughing. She said at least it wasn’t my teeth! I got a side cramp. They had to call time so we could compose ourselves.

We finished three rounds and the score was 8 points to 4. I took home a gold medal and realized it WAS FUN!

I only wish I had video taped the match so perhaps my husband would lift the ban on my playing in game night!

Pilates - Uncovered After 80 Years of Dormancy, Pilates is Far >From Dead.

Monday, June 11th, 2007

In a way, he’s a lot like Edgar Allen Poe.

The famous writer had been deceased for many years before he
miraculously cracked super-stardom, his once-buried work
revamped from the ashes to be relished by millions and millions
of literature fans.

Well, Joseph Pilates is not Edgar Allen Poe. The German
immigrant is hardly a household name in 1999, but just like Poe,
some thirty-two years after his death, his lost treasures are
now being discovered as genius works of art.

You’ve seen the countless infomercials in the middle of the
night, boasting this piece of exercise equipment and that toning
apparatus. They usually get a famous retired athlete like Joe
Montana to endorse it and swear by it. You’ll actually watch for
a minute and a half before realizing that you just wasted 90
seconds of your life.

But the word is out that the Pilates Method is different. This
one actually works.

That’s why, if you look around, Pilates studios are cropping
everywhere throughout the United States. Many health clubs are
offering Pilates classes on a regular basis and more and more
Pilates machines are filling household closets where those dusty
sets of golf clubs used to rest.

Upon arriving in New York City from Germany, Mr. Pilates
primarily created his method of fitness to benefit the dance
community, as it was a success along Broadway in the 1920’s. The
exercises provided dancers with that much-needed agility and
grace.

Now, in New York City alone, there are about 40 different
studios where the Pilates Method is taught with more cropping up
every day.

But the Pilates Method has not been restricted to just exercise
outlets. All kinds of hospitals, clinics, and health centers are
pulling in these machines to treat patients with spinal
injuries, back ailments, and shoulder cuff problems, just to
name a few.

The Pilates Method is essentially an exercise that combines
toning and stretching, utilizing a series of rhythmic movements
to achieve balance and grace. It does not have the effects of
heavy free weights or Nautilus machines. The exercises you
perform are very smooth and controlled and require specific
movements from isolated muscle groups.

The common Pilates apparatus, called the Universal Reformer,
looks almost like a magic carpet. Depending on the exercise,
your body weight will rest on the padded platform, which moves
along the base of the machine through a series of pulleys. The
motions are performed with cables and a series of different
handles, depending on what motion you’re performing.

These exercises are not performed in sets, really. It is a long,
continual motion that will target balance and flexibility, every
bit as much as it targets strength and conditioning. You can do
an exercise for nearly a half-hour, if you’d like.

What’s interesting about Pilates is that there are no weights
involved. No adjusting the resistance, no sliding that pin down
a couple of plates. The resistance is you! When your pulling the
cables in toward your chest, the weight that your pulling is
simply your own body weight. And the magic carpet takes away the
use of gravity during the exercise; only your specific muscles
being worked is what creates any sort of movement and stability.

Aside from toning up the torso, the Pilates Method also helps
you achieve healthy breathing and relaxation while vastly
increasing stamina.

With the benefits seemingly unlimited, perhaps the Pilates
Method is a wise choice for an alternate route if you’re
becoming worn out from those pounding aerobics classes or
squeaky Nautilus machines. Or perhaps you’re always one to jump
on the latest fitness craze, and for thousands of Americans and
patrons worldwide, Pilates is certainly that.

Our guide to Wrist Rolling

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Wrist rolling is a great way to strengthen the forearms. Not
only is it a great way to add strength and definition to your
forearms, but it also can help with finger strength as well as
wrist strength. It’s also been known to help out people who
suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.

For this specific exercise you will either need to buy, or make
your own wrist roller. There are various places that you can buy
a wrist roller from and prices range anywhere from nineteen to
fifty dollars. A simpler solution is to make your own. To do
this you simply need a sturdy rod of some type that will provide
a comfortable grip that is anywhere from nine to eighteen inches
long. In the middle of the rod tie a rope or strong string in
the center. At the end of this rope, attach an amount of weight
that you deem worthy.

With the weight attached to the end of the string, simply begin
to wind the rope up onto the rod. Continue winding until the
weight reaches the rod. From this position begin unwinding the
rope. For maximum benefits, keep your forearms flexed through
out the entire exercise.

A Girlfriends Getaway — Do’s and Dont’s

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Do…keep it small. Too many cooks in the kitchen…too many
gals in a hotel room. The simplest task of getting ready to go
out could end up taking all night. Don’t…cram into small
spaces. We are all older now and enjoy our own beds. Book the
right number of hotel rooms or rent a home with enough bedrooms.
If going the value route at least make it a king bed if
girlfriends are to share. Do…bring some treats. Healthy or
otherwise. Your girlfriends will be sure to thank you
Don’t…overindulge. You do not want to spend the whole next day
of your much deserved vacation alone in the hotel room with a
headache or even a bad sunburn. Take precautions girlfriend!.
Do…pack plenty of aspirin and bottled waters. Before diving
into that hotel bed take 2 aspirin and drink a bottle of water.
You’ll thank yourself in the morning. Do…take careful
consideration of everyone’s financial situation. A luxurious
weekend at a 4 star spa or hotel sounds great but you don’t want
to contribute to anyone’s credit card debt. Don’t…overpack.
One tip is to stay with 1 color scheme for the weekend so
everything can mix and match. (FYI Black is always in)
Do…bring along a financially savvy person. There is always one
in the bunch they can help with tips, negotiating for better
hotel rooms, splitting costs, bargain shopping, they will talk
you out of that impulse buy, etc. If you do not have a
girlfriend like this really make a point of finding one.
Don’t…pack new shoes. Whether at a spa or resort hotel you’re
sure to do a lot of walking. Nothing ruins an evening like sore
feet. Do…make it a point to travel with the special girls in
your life annually.

Search Engine Optimization for Blogs

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Whether it’s a corporate blog, a news-type blog, or even a personal blog, optimizing your blog for the search engines is a must. There are some simple changes that you can make to WordPress and Moveable Type that will make your blog more search engine friendly and make the search engines beg for more (more post and content, that is!).

Optimizing a blog is just like optimizing any other website. The content and pages (posts) must be unique, they must be search engine friendly, and it needs links from other websites. If it’s a new blog, then you first need to make sure the blog software you’re using is set up so that it takes advantage of all of the possible optimization features. Then, announce it to the world, work on getting some links to it, and start making posts.

WordPress Optimization

If you’re using WordPress for your blog software, it’s important to make sure that your site is search engine friendly, meaning that it can easily be spidered by the search engine spiders. Just like optimizing a website, it’s important to have good title tags and meta tags. Keep in mind that blog software usually uses the title of your post as the title tag, so include keywords in your titles as much as possible.

It’s important to set up your blog’s software so that the URLs don’t contain a lot of variables. Instead, use URLs that include the post title or post name in them. For example, if you’re using WordPress you’ll need to set the permalinks so that it uses %postname% in the URL. You can also set up a specific category for the post archives, and you might consider using a keyword that’s related to your blog instead of the default, which is typically the word “archive”.

Fintan Darragh of www.dech.co.uk has a great blog post called “Ultimate WordPress SEO Tips” (http://www.dech.co.uk/2005/11/ultimate-WordPress-seo-tips/). Mr. Darragh talks about permalink optimization and says, “The goal: stick more keywords up into the URL and remove the faff which nobody uses, to make the URL search engine and people attractive. Having keywords in your URL is an absolute must, especially when it’s as easy as WordPress makes it.” He also goes on to talk about getting rid of useless tags like the month, day, and year, as well as one important detail: whatever you do stick with the site structure you choose—otherwise you might end up with a lot of useless links to your site. Other tips that Mr. Darragh mentions are optimizing your page titles and your post titles–and installing a few plugins that are useful such as the “Related Posts Plugin” and the “Technorati Tag Generator”.

There are several other places where you can get specific tips about setting up WordPress in a search engine friendly manner, including:

* SEO at Aleeya Dot Net - http://www.aleeya.net/category/WordPress/seo/
* The Best WordPress SEO Possible - http://WordPress.org/support/topic/49168
* Search Engine Optimization for WordPress - http://codex.WordPress.org/Search_Engine_Optimization_for_WordPress
* Search Engine Optimization for Blogs - http://www.blog-maniac.com/blog-seo.htm
* DYI Search Engine Optimization - http://lorelle.WordPress.com/2006/01/15/dyi-search-engine-optimization/

One of the best tutorials out there is one called “DYI Search Engine Optimization” by Lorelle VanFossen. Specifically, Lorelle (lorelle.WordPress.com) has some great tips, including how to optimize your code, develop strong intrasite links, write with strong keyword usage, use categories and tags, and how to use ping services. Lorelle says that “the goal is to help search engine crawlers move through your website collecting information to be stored in the search engine’s database. The key to your blog’s data making it successfully into a search engine’s database is to:

1) Make sure there are no road blocks in the path of a search engine crawler.
2) Make sure the crawler can move through your blog, examining all your web pages.
3) Provide adequate keywords and key phrases which clearly help categorize your content.
4) Provide clearly labeled tags and categories recognized by tagging service crawlers and many search engines today.
5) Take advantage of pinging services.”

There are several WordPress Plugins available that will help you take advantage of internal linking (like the Related Posts Plugin) which will link to other posts in your blog that are on the same topic. Other plugins that might be helpful are plugins that automatically generate a Google Sitemap file as well as plugins that help you categorize the site such as the WordPress Subdomain Plugin (http://www.webguerrilla.com/WordPress-subdomain-plugin/).

Movable Type Optimization
If you’re using Movable Type for your blog software, then it’s also important to make sure that your site is search engine friendly and can be spidered by the search engine spiders. Just like optimizing a website, it’s important to have good title tags and meta tags. Keep in mind that blog software usually uses the title of your post as the title tag, so include keywords in your titles as much as possible.

Miles Evans (http://www.webpronews.com/expertarticles/expertarticles/wpn-62-20060310Movable TypeSEO.html) says that “Movable Type is optimized quite well out of the box, but there are a few quick tricks to easily providing the spiders with some dynamic content.” He goes on to say that you need to optimize your template. “For my main home page and category index pages I hardcode most of my meta data. Your meta tags will be at the top of the template within the tag. You can get fancy on your index pages but I cannot really see why. Optimize these two templates by hand for whatever keywords you are targeting site wide.” Mr. Evans also has another article titled, “Best Movable Type Plugins” (http://www.webpronews.com/expertarticles/expertarticles/wpn-62-20060310BestMovable TypePlugins.html) that talks about his favorite plugins that help him get great search engine rankings. His favorite Movable Type Plugins for SEO are Dashify, MTPaginate, MT Blogroll, MT InlineEditor, MT-Textile, BigPAPI, as well as Ajaxify (a set of plugins that adds several ajax/javascript widgets into the Movable Type interface), CheckLinks, FormatList v1.0, and Better File Uploader for uploading files.

Nicholas Carvan (http://www.nicholascaravan.com) has a great article about Movable Type optimization called “Optimizing your Movable Type blog for Google” (http://www.nicholascarvan.com/blog/optimizing_your_Movable Type_blog_for_google.html). In it he talks about PageRank (and how it relates to your internal linking on your blog), having keywords in your URL (which is important for all blog optimization) and blogrolling. He defines the term blogrolling very well, saying, “Blogrolling: Inbound links are gold, but in Google’s eyes, not all links are equal. In particular, Google isn’t wild about links contained within JavaScript - apparently they can index them, but that doesn’t mean they always want to.”

Once you’ve set up and configured your blog’s software, it’s important to make sure that you leave it alone—if you change your page URLs then any links that you’ve received from other bloggers may not be valid anymore. If you need to change your site’s structure (perhaps you’ve been blogging already and wish to use the tips from this article to optimize your blog), then you might want to take a look at the Objection Redirection WordPress Plugin(http://WordPress-plugins.biggnuts.com/objection-redirection-WordPress-plugin/) if you’re using WordPress. The Objection Redirection Plugin gives you a simple interface to redirect users (and search engine bots) to the proper page, especially if you’ve changed your site’s structure.

Start Blogging
The best thing you can do is to start blogging. Go ahead and post to your heart’s content and write, write, write about your topic. The more content you can provide the better—and it seems as if adding content on a regular basis really helps, as well. Feel free to link out to other blog posts that are related to the topic you’re writing about. For example, before you publish a post, go on over to your favorite blog search engine and find another recent post on the same subject—and link to the post. Linking out to other bloggers will get their attention, and hopefully they’ll end up linking to you as well. If other bloggers have trackbacks turned on then their blog will link back to your post. Some trackbacks are moderated, so it might take some time before your link shows up on the other blog. And some bloggers have trackbacks turned off, so a link back to your site might take some manual intervention.

Categorize your posts as much as possible, and feel free to add categories as you blog—it will help the internal linking structure of your site, and help the search engines and users find on-topic posts.

Promoting Your Blog
Whenever you make a post in your blog, your blog software will attempt to ping certain sites to let them know that you just updated your blog. There are many blog ping services out there, including Ping-O-Matic and Pingoat. Your blog software can be configured to ping sites automatically, and I’ve posted a list for WordPress of ping services on by blog (http://www.corporatewebsitemarketing.info/cwm/WordPress-ping-list).

If your blog is new or you would like to get some more links, you can submit your blog to blog directories as well as other sites that will list your blog (don’t forget to submit to DMOZ.org, Yahoo! Directory, and the Best of the Web Blog Directory). About.com has a great article about promoting a blog (http://weblogs.about.com/cs/blogpromotions/a/promoteblog.htm) and even Biz Stone has great tutorial about promoting your blog (http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=1060). Lastly, don’t forget to turn on your blog’s RSS feed. And if you’re looking to promote your RSS feed, try searching your favorite search engine for “promote rss” to find a lot of good tutorials.

Promoting your blog is just like promoting a website—you need good spiderable content, links to your content, and you need to set up your blog software to take advantage of all the great features. There are also plugins that will help make blogging easier for all of us.
