As a registered nurse and caregiver of the elderly for almost 15 years, one of the most disturbing problems I have seen has been fall related injuries. Over and over again, I have seen life jerked out from under elderly people in the blink of an eye due to fractured hips, head injuries, and multiple internal problems that could have been prevented. The Center for Disease Control has published the following statistics:
More than one-third of adults ages 65 years and older fall each year (Hornbrook 1994; Hausdorff 2001).
Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths (Murphy 2000) and the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma (Alexander 1992).
In 2003 more than 1.8 million seniors age 65 and older were treated in emergency departments for fall-related injuries and more than 421,000 were hospitalized (CDC 2005).
In 2002, nearly 13,000 people ages 65 and older died from fall-related injuries (CDC 2004). More than 60% of people who die from falls are 75 and older (Murphy 2000).
Of those who fall, 20% to 30% suffer moderate to severe injuries such as hip fractures or head traumas that reduce mobility and independence, and increase the risk of premature death (Sterling 2001).
Among people ages 75 years and older, those who fall are four to five times more likely to be admitted to a long-term care facility for a year or longer (Donald 1999).
Falls are a leading cause of traumatic brain injuries (Jager 2000).
Among older adults, the majority of fractures are caused by falls (Bell 2000).
Approximately 3% to 5% of older adult falls cause fractures (Cooper 1992; Wilkins 1999). Based on the 2000 census, this translates to 360,000 to 480,000 fall-related fractures each year.
These statistics make one realize how essential it is to protect our elderly population from becoming another number to add to the list.
As the owner of Servant’s Heart Homemaker Services, we strive to do everything we can to make the homes of our clients a safe and secure environment for them. Here are some suggestions to follow in order to do the same for your loved ones as well:
Make sure all rooms are well lit and light switches are easy to reach, even when getting up out of bed. Keep a flash light in more than one place that’s easy to find in emergencies
Make sure stairways are secure by installing hand rails and ensuring good lighting that’s easy to control at both ends of the stairway. Make sure that carpeting is not loose or frayed on stairways.
Secure the bathroom with grab bars and bath mats and/or safety strips in the tub or shower. Provide a shower bench. Elevated toilet seats can be very helpful for taller individuals, along with grab bars around the toilet.
Keep clutter to a minimum; make sure there are no telephone or electrical cords in pathways throughout the house. Tack rugs and glue vinyl flooring to prevent tripping. Make certain that all rugs or runners have non-slip backing – or better yet, remove them completely, if possible
Encourage your loved ones to wear nonslip, low-heeled shoes or slippers that properly fit their feet. Tell them to never walk around in stocking feet.
Provide a walker or cane if necessary. Make sure they stay seated when feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and remind them to stand up slowly.
Some medications ,including over the counter medicines, can cause drowsiness and/or an unsteady gait. Be sure your loved one is aware when taking these medications, and takes extra precautions to prevent injuries.
Remember outside hazards; paint stairs with a mixture of sand and paint for better traction. Keep outdoor walkways and entrances clear, well-lit, and free of snow and ice.
Take your loved one for regular eye and hearing exams. Poor eyesight can be hazardous when ambulating. Inner ear problems can cause dizziness and affect balance.
Make sure your loved ones get regular exercise to strengthen muscles. Limit alcohol intake to avoid unsteadiness.
Finally, be sure to provide them with a personal emergency response service to ensure that they can get help should they experience a fall. These systems are available through a variety of different businesses, and are essential in providing security for older people who live at home alone.
Implementation of these suggestions will require a great deal of effort, but may help your elderly loved one live safely at home and enjoy years of good living ahead of them.

HELP! My PR page rank is grey, call the development doctor. As the world of Google is turning a mile a minute these days, some really big changes are happening. This weekend, marketers all around the world don’t believe what they are seeing… Google’s Page Ranking system is dead.
Is it really dead?
In an online forum post from WebProWorld.com (A discussion on Google), people from all over are speculating about what is going on. In fact, one member was quick to point out that the last big shift Google had, we saw the PR system go down as well. This begs the question…
Are we on the verge of a BIG PR shift? or,
Are we seeing a Google marketing scheme just to shake people up?
In many ways, Google needs to be improved upon their “broken down PR system”. There are so many areas if they payed attention to forums and blogs all around the world, they would have more than enough feedback about their PR system to fix this growing PR issue.
Page ranking is a potentially a great system. It CAN be a great system if it directly ranks websites properly by content, relevance, and not simply by the number of links pointing to an individual website.
These days, you see a website with 15 “medium relevant” links pointing to it while its front page holds a PR of 7-8 out of 10. How do you justify that?
What will it mean if Google’s PR systems stays down?
I believe it will mean a big shift to online marketing. Many newbies out there that are barely legal when it comes to SEO have an opportunity to measure everything they do. In turn, the newbies may even sound professional to their clients. Take away these tools and you are left with true marketing gurus that have stood the test of time and can deliver results for themselves and their clients.
The internet is vastly growing into a pool of professional fakes and scammers. This is really giving the internet marketing community a bad name. Without the Google PR, many people won’t be able to prove their results nor will they have that “fake respect” that you get from having a website with PR 7/10.
What about MSN & Yahoo?
In growing efforts to keep up with MSN & Yahoo’s strong and growing marketing campaign, Google may be feeling left out these days. Many people think that their PR system is simply a gimmick; a gimmick that attracts a lot of attention. By disabeling this system, you create mass fear and confusion. Bad publicity is still publicity neverless?
So, is Google trying to create a buzz?
This could be possible and it could be possible that everything will be back to normal within a couple of days. We won’t know until time catches up with us.
Until then, take this “dark saga” moment and find other ways to build your business online. Don’t worry about what Google is doing, worry about what you are doing to improve your internet marketing campaign.

Today sitting on a couch, we can flip through hundreds of T.V. channels, tune the T.V. to suit our requirements and perform a host of other operations without moving an inch. The T.V. remote control has become an indispensable gadget.
The first T.V. remote, called Lazy Bones, was made in 1950 by the Zenith Corporation. It had a wire attached to it, which connected it to a motor inside the T.V. By pressing the buttons on the remote, viewers could move the motor in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction to move up or down channels. But the remote wire caused plenty of accidents, with people constantly tripping over them.
Subsequent developments led to the manufacture of the wireless remote, which used ultrasonic sound, and then the modern T.V. remote, which uses infrared light to send signals to the T.V. The low-frequency infrared light is invisible to the human eye and can only be detected by the T.V. receiver.
The appearance of T.V. remote controls has also undergone many developments. From the bulky awkward boxes of the 50s, remotes evolved into the familiar peanut and the slim rectangular shapes with round or rectangle-shaped buttons. In 2006, remotes have become even more high-tech, with streamlined, easy-to-hold shapes and backlit LCD screens that display exhaustive menus of options. In fact, the new T.V. remote is more like a hand-held computer than a remote control device.
Intelligent T.V. remotes are in vogue today. These remote controls can interconnect appliances like your television and your computer; they even have digital program guides and activity control features that let them automatically switch on the T.V. when you put on the DVD player. With such smart T.V. remote controls, you can wield great power from your couch.
Remote Controls provides detailed information on Remote Controls, Radio Remote Controls, TV Remote Controls, Universal Remote Controls and more. Remote Controls is affiliated with Wireless Speakers.

A dog owner contacted me the other day and said, “Adam: I’ve been using your dog training techniques for six months now and Zac, my Labrador /Heeler cross (two years old) is just about an angel now.
The only problem I have is that he digs up the lawn approximately once every two months. I have him on a running lead when I’m not home and this prevents him from digging. However, he is off the lead over night. Most of the time he’s good, but now and again he digs a hole (at night).
I’m reluctant to put him on the lead at night because this is when he goes to the toilet (he can’t go during the day). Can you please provide me with some advice so that I can stop this problem?
Thanks,
Night-Digger
Dear Night-Digger:
Thank you for your comments about my dog training techniques, which I write about at Dogproblems.com.
A good solution to your problem would be to confine the dog at night. This can be done either by putting him in a crate, or if you want him outside, build him a kennel run with concrete flooring so he can’t dig. Because you can’t catch him in the act of digging, the way to work with this behavior (especially if it’s only at night) is to prevent it from happening.
From your email, I understand that your dog is tied on the running lead all day without access to the yard to do his business. If you can’t be home to let him out during the afternoon or evening hours, perhaps a responsible neighbor or even a professional pet-sitting service would be willing to do this for you. He should also be having plenty of exercise, both mental and physical to tire him out, and again this is where the neighbor or pet-sitter can come in handy, as well as yourself when you come home. Tiring him out will assure you that he stays out of trouble, all the more so if he’s confined properly.

To most overseas investors circa 1994, a first look at the Indian Telecommunication Policy appeared to mitigate concerns. In our naiveté, we expected this Policy to put India at least on par with China where a stifling regime governed telecommunications. A disastrous implementation however ensured India languished behind its neighbor on tele-density, cellular usage and broadband coverage.
Fortunately, later developments like the Unified Licensing Scheme, albeit a reactionary response to events threatening to overwhelm TRAI (the Regulator), do pull Indian de-regulation ahead of even places like Hong Kong where a unified scenario is only just being discussed. Merits of particular aspects of de-regulation notwithstanding, the overseas investor expects to see a clear roadmap forward if the increase in permissible FDI to 74% has to hold any meaning. The recent imbroglio on the future of the 1900MHz band is an excellent opportunity for TRAI to use the controversy to draw up precisely such a map.
Of equal concern to the foreign investor and something on which operators on both sides of the GSM-CDMA divide concur, is the demise of high margin demand. The future holds a long slog uphill for every rupee increase to the ARPU (Average Revenue per User). Making it more interesting is the futility of erstwhile successful product and marketing strategies under today’s margin conditions. Additionally when one last looked, the government had its hand in the till for an unbelievable 22-25% of revenues in the form of license fees, revenue share and a second license fee through a disingenuous “spectrum usage charge”. Add the Access Deficit Charge (ADC) ransom being paid out to the Dominant carrier BSNL and one cannot blame some investors for setting aside their calculators and heading for the door.
With cellular collection rates at abysmal levels thanks to the pseudo-WLL/CDMA roll outs, the cellular operators look at additional infrastructure investments with trepidation. However, innovative value-added services being one of the few ways to elevate ARPUs out of their funk, invest they must. How intelligently they do so, decides their fate.
The 2003-04 EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) deployment by some GSM operators is the sort of response one hoped to see. Cost effectively providing three times the data capacity of GPRS, EDGE gives operators like Bharti, Hutch and IDEA the delivery system to offer innovative information and entertainment based services, as well as economically venture into rural areas. Using the same TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) frame structure as GSM, EDGE allows existing cell plans to remain intact. On the other hand it uses a new modulation scheme that is also used for UMTS/3G. This makes it a sort of half-way house to 3G, for those still brave enough to contemplate that option. However while EDGE was a smart decision, the jury is still out on 3G.
Emulating European cellular operators whose track record belies such faith, some Indian cellular carriers have nevertheless started chalking out transition paths towards that Holy Grail. Even if the collection rates in India were not as dismal as they are, deploying 3G could be a disaster waiting to happen. It was heartening therefore when the Indian IT Minister stated last year that India aims to leapfrog to fourth-generation wireless technology, skipping 3G as it has not been found cost-effective. This is one of the rare occasions when the industry is well served by listening to its Minister.
However these are mere words until the Honorable Minister first unfetters VOIP (Voice-over-IP). Unless the chastity belt around VOIP networks is discarded and they are allowed to mingle with the PSTN, India is going to tie itself into knots over 4G, inside which by the way, the pervasive theme is IP. Living outside India one usually lags behind unfolding events, but to the best of my knowledge even today the VOIP – PSTN interconnect incredibly, remain illegal.
One beneficial outcome to the 1996 fiasco surrounding the bids for regional circles has been an all around reluctance to consider further auctions, including for 3G. This saved Indian operators from the fate of their European counterparts. While Europe’s 3G license fees did nothing to secure a future for the technology, emerging OFDMA (WiFi/ WiMax MMDS) alternatives may very well deliver the coup de grace. Whatever the counter-arguments out there, the fact that 3G services in The UK still resort to distress sales of basic voice services to garner a customer base, says it all.
Unlike EDGE, going 3G does not just involve software upgrades and the math becomes more daunting by orders of magnitude. For starters, the air-interface/ frame structure (WCDMA as against TDMA) is totally different. This means changes at every cell-site in the network. And then of course there is the entire wherewithal required to inter-operate with existing 2G elements of the network.
An alternative however does exist, that until recently dare not speak its name for fear of the Telecommunication establishment.
Contrary to negative press stemming largely from the large cellular operators, it’s possible to co-opt Wireless LANs (WLANs) into one eco-system with cellular networks. An EDGE-enabled cellular network patched into WLAN (WiFi/WiMax) networks in high density locations could allow Indian operators to deliver high-speed data services with laser precision exactly where required and at far less costs than in 3G-ing a similar area. I trust this is akin to what the IT Minister has in mind. Additionally, such meshed network could provide indoor voice connectivity over cell phones in broadband-enabled locations with poor cellular reception.
An interesting twist comes from the recent furtive WiMax deployment in Japan by Vodafone and elsewhere by other marquee 3G operators, vidicating the position taken in this paper.
The cellular operator may have to offer different fixed line/broadband type tariff structures in these locations, raising fears that they would eat into cellular revenues, But one has to wonder how much of the generated traffic would represent cannibalized revenue and how much would bring in incremental dollars from traffic presently going any way over fixed/wireless broadband and over the different flavors of Voice over Broadband (VoB) services used increasingly from precisely such locations.
No one touts OFDMA air-interfaces as an alternative to WCDMA /3G. It’s the integration of the two technologies that creates a potentially winning alternative, especially in the Indian context. Integrating selected WLAN Hot spots into a cellular network requires an IP Network Controller (INC), an IP access network, a patch to allow the WLAN access network to issue the relevant accounting information to the cellular AAA (authentication, authorization, and accounting) server and an investment in IP roaming. Barring a few more widgets, that’s essentially it.
Given the relative simplicity of this solution, anyone who has seen engineers sweat over cell site deployment in congested locations has to wonder why the operators have not already adopted WLAN to augment cellular coverage on the cheap.
Costs aside, there is an interesting aspect of 3G technology that could force operators to consider OFDMA based options to augment cellular data delivery systems. It may not be common knowledge, but 3G differs from 2G (GSM) in one important aspect – the interdependence of network quality. In 2G, high traffic in one location tends to introduce poor quality in just the particular cell covering that location. In 3G however, the bad quality also impacts surrounding cells because a cell size may vary depending on the traffic load it carries. Called “cell-breathing” this is due to the interdependence between capacity and coverage over WCDMA air-interfaces and could end up impacting voice quality.
No service provider however, is going to jeopardize voice quality and capacity for the sake of data. This implies there are merits to a separate data-centric network. And if such options are available at least at the peripheries, at costs substantially lower than the vaunted 3G and if these options appear slated to become the bulwark of future 4G data delivery mechanisms, it then surely behooves the Indian cellular operator not to adopt the same blinkered thinking that’s the hallmark of his European counterpart and to look seriously at a GSM/EDGE-WLAN based solution.
It baffles why instead of prevaricating, the European and American cellular companies haven’t swooped in and massively sequestered wireless access for IP traffic from the fragmented but potentially formidable WLAN and Voice over Broadband (VoB) players. After all, at least for now the cellular operator holds all the cards. Only he gets to decide whether the customer receives a combined cellular + WLAN bill. This gives his combined cellular-WLAN service a killer advantage over any other Fixed/wireless broadband or Vonage-type VoB offering. By now the cellular operators could have usurped great chunks of IP traffic and decimated the upstart VoB players before they ever took root. Alternatively, just a declaration of intent could have the WLAN & VoB players scurrying to negotiate interconnect and revenue share agreements on terms that could only be favorable to the cellular operator.
It’s too obvious a scenario and one doesn’t expect such shortsightedness to last. T-Mobile’s extensive WiFi deployment in the USA and in Europe is apparently with such an end-game in mind. And so was, we hope, the honorable IT Minister’s intention, when he squared off against 3G.
BRAHAM SINGH joined PCCW in January 2001 and founded their international IP backbone & service company now called BtNAccess after its merger with Corporate Access, one of Asia’s largest satellite based service provider. I am sure you know that advertising is vital to our business. Whether it’s free, whether it’s paid, the key is to assign it to a purpose and to use it accordingly.
“Isn’t sale the purpose of advertising?” you might have a question to me. Well, no, at least not always. For instance, while writing your ads you should focusing two main points Visitors and Exposure.
1. Focusing Visitors.
May be your ad is not large enough to tell everything about what you sell. Think about a 5 lines ad. You will spend two lines with headline and link (direction). What about to write first in three remaining lines? In this situation a good choice is to gain the readers attention and to send them to your site where you have the sales letter.
2. Focusing exposure.
Put yourself in the reader position. You have on your screen a list running tens of ads. Will you read everyone? Probably not. You will read one, two, three… but not the entire list. May be the most interesting ad is swimming between the rest.
Going back to advertiser position, lack of exposure makes your ad quite impossible to be noticed. To improve your ad exposure you have two choices: A Top Sponsor Ad or A Solo Ad.
A Top Sponsor Ad is the first ad you see on a list. Most of the time it is personalized to catch the reader’s attention. By the consequence it has a high exposure related to the rest ones. Top Sponsor Ad is a good solution when you can describe well your product in only 3-4 lines or you focus visitors.
A Solo Ad gets you the maximum exposure because it is exclusive per issue and well personalized. Another advantage of Solo Ad is you have enough room to write about your product, it is like a selling letter going to a large readers base.
Of course, for a Top Sponsor or Solo Ad you must pay more, but if you take care to chose the most appropriate list(s) you will have the money back plus a good profit. Do not think that you will succeed choosing by random a list with a large base of subscribers. Better use a small one that is close targeted to your product and if is possible run your solo or top ad twice. If you need to change something, change the ad not the ezine.

The myth continues-that a real book must be in print and it must be over 160 pages. Rethink the premier approach: Write a short book to get more bookings, get your word out to thousands, gain credibility, as well as vast virtual promotion and an ongoing increased stream of income.
1. Write your short (10 pages to 100 pages) print and eBook at the same time using the same word file.
Speakers need to know that business people’s reading hours are down from 123 hours per hear in 1999, to 109 hours in 2001, and in 2005–the figure is even lower. They want short how-to books.
Speakers have the edge over other businesses because you already have past talks, cassettes, or articles you’ve already written. Just dust them off with a new angle for each audience. This approach creates even more product.
2. If you don’t get a book out, you don’t get the bookings, your word out or ongoing income.
3. To get started:
-Write about what you know–you are the expert
-Solve your audience’s problem or challenge
-List 5-10 benefits and features of your book
-Know your thesis before you write a word
-List 3-5 major topics to later become your chapter titles
-List 3-5 sub points for one chapter title
Take just five - ten hours a week to get your book written in less than a month. Watch your speaking business thrive!

Perhaps every rider has been entangled in a situation when he
shelled out big bucks for a quality helmet just to replace his
old stinker of motorcycle apparel. So the question now is how
you qualify quality? It needs a kin eye and feel to make the
right choice. A rider must also know his personal needs as a
rider. Let us tackle it one by one…
Mis-fitted helmet is obviously risky because of its safety, and
other annoying problems. To mention a few they are discomfort,
obstructed vision, goggles rammed down, increased susceptibility
to fogging, impeded nasal breathing, and at most can even
precipitate a crash.
Buying without first trying it on is pretty risky because you
have know clear idea whether it will fit you well. According to
statistics, majority of helmets are mis-sized. Sixty percent of
which is too big for the riders. Sizes vary depending on the
helmet brands. Another thing is that, even if you happen to fit
the lid, liners might eventually break-in or settle. Thus, fit
may change dramatically.
Nowadays, there are wide varieties of helmets that come with
removable liner parts. With regards to off-road helmets there
are also removable liner systems. Using different liners within
like shells makes helmet sizes. Therefore, different sizes can
share same shells with varying thickness liners yet yield the
‘perfect fit’.
Arai, for one, is offering helmet models with removable liners
in different sizes aiming for customization. Its shells are
comprised of three removable parts - the ear cups, top pad and
side pads. By interchanging these parts, a rider can achieve his
goal for a right fit.
With regards to Bell, Moto 6 has two basic shell sizes. Removing
and interchanging inner liners can result to other sizes.
Shoei, on the other hand, has four different shell sizes. Same
with Moto 6, it offers one-piece removable liner. Nevertheless,
it offers separate ear/cheek pads. Shoei’s liners can only be
interchanged with common shells.
The rest of the manufacturers and helmet lines also offer the
same fitting schemes. The best advise I can give you is to
personally buy your helmet and fit it. That way you are sure
with your choice.. Remember that you are going to use it in your
every ride so choose it meticulously.
