I remember just a handful of the Christmas presents I received as a child: My first Barbie doll with her skinny black sequined gown. My soft, pink Pat-a-Burp doll. The microscope I got in second grade.
But I have many, many memories of our holiday traditions. The lovely aromas of holiday ethnic food. Riding the South Shore train into Chicago to visit the “real” Santa. Using a paintbrush to decorate sugar cookies with colored frosting. Setting up our manger scene.
Traditions add so much joy to the holidays. Traditions give a child a sense of belonging and identity. They strengthen bonds across generations and live long in memory.
A family rich in traditions has a powerful antidote to commercialism. The more focused you are on pleasures that cost little or nothing, the more all the gifts tend to stay in their appropriate place.
Best of all, many traditions are perfectly suited to today’s busy families. Here are a few favorites:
SIMPLE PLEASURES
Light candles at dinnertime. If December mornings are dark where you live, light candles at breakfast, too.
Take an evening stroll or car ride to look at Christmas lights.
Serve warm chocolate with candy canes for stirring.
THE JOY OF GIVING
Let your kids in on the excitement of finding and wrapping gifts for those they love. Compliment them for being big enough to keep the surprise a secret.
As a family, decide on a charity and make a donation. Our favorite is Heifer International (www.heifer.org).
Take a plate of cookies or other holiday treats to a homeless shelter or to a police or fire station.
GRATITUDE
Give family members strips of paper in holiday colors. Let everyone write or draw something they’re thankful for on each strip. Link the strips into a chain and hang as a decoration.
Write thank-you cards to each other. Decide together when to open them.
CONNECTING GENERATIONS
Interview grandparents, aunts, and uncles about holiday traditions they remember from their childhood. Adopt any traditions that fit your family.
Ask relatives for holiday recipes that have been handed down in your family. Or, search the Internet for holiday recipes related to your ethnic origins.
NEW YEAR’S EVE
If your kids are little, it works fine to celebrate the new year at 9 PM instead of midnight!
Pull out photos and videos from the past year and share your memories.
Keep a box of inexpensive noisemakers and party hats that you can re-use each year. The kids will enjoy pulling out their old favorites.
NEW YEAR’S DAY
Decorate a box in which you’ll put photos, ticket stubs and other souveniers of the coming year. Talk about your hopes and wishes.
Let each family member put New Year’s resolutions into their own envelope. Author Mimi Doe (”Busy But Balanced”) has a tradition of sealing the envelopes with wax — a nice, magical touch.

Innovation, in a business context, is generally thought of as the product or application of creativity. Peter F. Drucker suggests that innovation “is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship.”
Mr. Drucker further suggests that there are seven sources of innovative opportunity. Four of these relate to a specific industry or service sector: the unexpected; the incongruous; process needs; and structural change. The other three relate to the human and economic environment: demographics; changes in perception, mood, and meaning; and new knowledge.
Let us observe some of these factors at work in a coffee shop venture. The unexpected factor in the recent success of gourmet coffee shops is the willingness of the consumer to spend two or three times the cost of a generic cup of coffee for exotic, flavored or brand-name coffee. An incongruity is the popularity of fat-free desserts (”healthy” indulgence) to go with that coffee. The structural change in the industry is the emergence of franchises. Environmental changes have also contributed to this phenomenon. As the “baby-boomer” generation has aged, the preferred place to meet has moved from the bar to the health club to the coffee shop.
Let us consider information about some current trends to see if we can relate them to potential opportunities in the context of Professor Drucker’s categories. For each, see if you can possibly find a niche on which to build a business:
• The unexpected The International Association for Financial Planning is observing a rapid (to the point of unexpected) increase in calls requesting referrals for financial planners. A spokesperson for the IAFP says, “People are realizing that financial planning is not just for retirement or saving for a child’s college education; it’s for all stages of a person’s life.”
• The incongruous Many Americans are feeling pressed for time, incongruously wishing to lead simpler, easier lives without giving up those activities that take the most time and effort. The opportunity lies in offering personal time-saving products and services that relieve these people of tasks that they find less than fulfilling, not worth the time, or unpleasant.
• Process needs Individuals and businesses are spending unprecedented sums of money to acquire the education, training and skills necessary to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving marketplace, creating opportunities in consulting and training.
• Structural change The health-care industry will flourish because of an aging population, myriad technological advances and people’s expectations of readily available medical care. One of the industry’s fastest growing segments is home-based health care, which is well-suited for entrepreneurs because of its ease of entry.
• Demographics The aging population referred to possesses a combination of leisure time and discretionary funds that makes them a great market for new ventures in services relating to their comfort and recreational needs.
• Changes in perception, mood and meaning The amount of money that citizens and businesses spend on security products and services is growing rapidly; the preferred method for many forms of purchase is increasingly becoming the Internet.
• New knowledge In 1996, for the first time, computer sales outnumbered television sales in the United States.
Do any of these sources of innovative opportunity suggest an entrepreneurial niche to you?

I was walking down the street the other day, walking around the pigeons and saying “good morning” to them when it dawned on me just how precious they are to the lives of city slickers.
How many of us have a dislike for these feathered creatures? I often see children chasing pigeons round in circles until they fly away. Once, when I was walking down a street in Oxford, I saw a very smartly dressed man, step down off the curb to chase a pigeon a few feet down the road! Why is it we have such an attitude towards these birds of nature? You don’t often see people chasing black birds or robins away.
I have come to understand pigeons as being a very precious part of urban life. In places where office blocks and apartments are replacing trees and grass, pigeons still roam. They don’t hang around the rubbish dumps or scavenge through our bins. They clean our streets of the food we clumsily drop. They tidy up the mess we leave.
No matter how many people chase them, scare them, are rude to them or even try to run them over, pigeons are still there reminding us that nature is all around. I feel our attitude as a nation is being reflected onto the pigeons of England, yet these creatures still give us respect, trust and friendship. Apparently, it is lucky to have a bird excrete on your shoulder, or so the tale goes! Why would it not be lucky unless these birds are giving us a message?
But what is this message? Well, why not ask the pigeons?! Next time you’re walking down the road and you see a pigeon, greet them and ask what it is they are trying to tell you. You may have a pleasant reply!

How many times have you started a diet or health plan only to quit after a few weeks? Maybe more often that you’d like to admit! How can you set yourself up for success and limit the temptation to quit? Plan well!
Once you have decided on your goals or what it is you’re trying to achieve there are some tips that can help you succeed.
Work on one goal at a time. Don’t cause yourself stress trying to make too many changes at the same time. Possibly some of the things you are trying to change are die-hard habits that need to be tackled slowly and consistently for the desired changes to become the new habit.
Break down your goals into smaller pieces. For example, focus on the half a kilo you want to lose this week compared to the 20 kilos all up.
Tackle only one piece at a time. Have you ever heard the saying, “How do you eat an elephant?” (One piece at a time!!) Biting off more than you can chew will only set you up to quit. To succeed, work on one small piece of your goal and only move on to the next step when the first step is complete.
Prepare and plan for obstacles. What will you do WHEN (not if) you get offered a slice of chocolate cake while on your diet? What will you do when it’s raining outside and you were planning to go for a walk? By planning ahead you won’t be put off or tempted to quit when obstacles arise.
Don’t give up if you slip up. So you don’t lose your half a kilo this week, don’t quit, just start from where you left off and learn from the slip up. Why did this happen? What will you do to prevent it happening again?
Celebrate every success. Every step towards your goal is a success. Reminding yourself of that and celebrating every success will help you stay in action and leave you feeling proud of what you’ve achieved. Reward yourself with every weekly step you accomplish. Go to the Day Spa, visit a friend, buy a small treat, whatever will reward you for your accomplishment.
Get support. You’ve heard it said that two heads are better than one so share your goals with others. Being accountable to others curbs the temptation to quit. Who can support you? Friends, can you find a diet buddy? Join a support group (diet group/health club etc). Or get the help of a professional such as a Dietician, Counsellor or Life Coach.
This week set up a plan of success. Work out what obstacles will get in your way of succeeding and how you will combat these. Above all set yourself up for success and limit the temptation to quit!

Is your child naughty, or is it something they ate?
Children with severe ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive
Disorder) and many with lesser concentration problems can react
to ‘food triggers’. They have the potential to show a distinct
improvement in mood and mind when the offending foods are
removed from their diet. When food is considered to be the
‘trigger’ it is necessary that the food or food group is
eliminated for a period of time, to truly establish it’s
reactive potential. Foods and additives should always be
considered when working with behavioural issues, before
progressing to a more investigative programme i.e. clinical
testing.
Sugar can be a huge trigger with children, as it disturbs their
delicate blood sugar balance. All children have a preference for
sweet foods, but sucrose or refined sugar can create extreme
highs and lows, which can then further impact on mental function.
Although the general perception is that the major food offenders
are more likely to be the refined, unhealthy foods, this is not
always the case. Fruits and vegetables are also identified as
triggers for hyperactivity; these are foods that are rich in
chemicals called salicylates. If a child were found to be
sensitive to these chemicals they would need to eliminate foods
such as: o Almonds o Apples o Apricots o Berries (all) o
Cherries o Cucumbers & pickles o Currants o Grapes & raisins o
Oranges, nectarines and tangerines o Peaches o Peppers (bell &
chilli) o Plums, prunes
Salicylate foods have an aspirin like quality that causes
reactions in children and some adults. Some of these foods are
packaged and dried especially for consumption of children, these
include apricots and currants and raisins. Along with the
allergic reaction they cause these fruits, which are very high
in sugar, further exacerbate blood sugar problems, causing
further behavioural problems.
Both wheat and dairy can be problematic, as can gluten a protein
found in wheat, rye and barley. Some gluten sensitive
individuals may also experience problems with oats.
Tartrazine (E102) is probably the most abundant
colouring/additive used in children’s foods today and
unfortunately is one of the most reactive food chemicals on the
market. The problem with E102 is that is leaches zinc out of the
body, which is then excreted in the urine. For children who have
sensitivity to E102 or who have a very low zinc status, this can
be very problematic, as zinc is a major mineral required for the
production of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals).
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) or (E621) is another additive that
can be problematic to both adults and children. In children’s
foods it is used mainly in burgers and crisps. Estimates of the
numbers of people who react to MSG vary wildly from 1-2% to as
many as 25-30% of the population. The US FDA-documented adverse
reactions to MSG, some, which are specific to behaviour, are
headache, heart rate change, mood changes, fatigue, and
dizziness. Other studies include reactions such as difficulty in
concentration, extreme mood swings, depression, difficulty with
balance, sleep disturbances and hyperactivity. Reaction time
varies, from shortly after consumption, to delayed reactions of
up to 48 hours after ingestion. Duration times also vary. Recent
research has proposed that too much glutamate causes excessive
brain cell excitation that can lead to cell death. It has been
further suggested that in the long term this could play a part
in neuro-degenerative disease such as Alzheimer and Parkinson’s
such as Alzheimer and Parkinson’s such as Alzheimer’s and
Parkinson’s.
Children display a myriad of symptoms from food
allergy/intolerance but attention deficit hyperactive disorder
is the most publicised. Other symptoms that should be
considered, can present in isolation or as part of a ‘complex’
of behaviour.
o Low or excess energy o Anger o Irritability o Reclusive
behaviour, sleepy or drowsy o Mood swings o Tantrums o Withdrawn
behaviour due to poor hearing or vision (caused by allergy) o
Poor hand eye co-ordination o Incomplete or poor communication o
Inability to integrate properly o Depression
A DIET FIT FOR A CHILD?
CARBOHYDRATES
Complex not refined to provide slow release energy, fibre and
vitamins and minerals. White flour and rice should be
substituted for whole grains. Nuts, seeds and pulses, fruits and
vegetables should be included daily.
PROTEINS
Are the building blocks for bones, teeth, muscles, ligaments and
nails, also the hormonal and nervous system. These require high
quality protein, which is vital to enable a growing body to
function optimally. Foods to incorporate: Dairy, milk, cheese,
yoghurt Eggs, red meat, fish, chicken Pulses, lentils, grains,
oats Nuts and seeds and soya Also vegetables contain small
amounts.
FATS The diet should reduce trans and saturated fats (margarine
and fried foods) in favour of essential fats to aid brain
development. Oily fish, nuts, seeds, whole grains, avocados and
corn.
WATER
As clean and pure as possible and should be used instead of
fizzy, sugary drinks.
LONG TERM…
Acknowledge that your child is an individual. Just because the
food is available doesn’t necessarily mean that it will suit
your child’s metabolism and mind. Be aware that food is an
extremely powerful tool in your child’s development.

Today, I’m going to share with you the awful truth about resumes and cover letters.
Here it is: Most of them stink.
That’s not just my opinion, although I’ve read nearly 15,000 resumes and cover letters over the years and found glaring mistakes in about 85-90% of them.
It’s also the opinion of most of the hiring professionals I’ve spoken to over the years.
Where do most resumes and cover letters go wrong? And how can you avoid the typical mistakes that most job seekers make?
To find answers, I spoke with two experienced recruiters. Their candid advice can help you avoid typical pitfalls, and get hired faster
Here it is …
1) Don’t Use The Same Resume For Every Job
Would you grab any old suit off the rack and rush off to church to get married? No. First, you get the suit tailored, so it fits. That way, you won’t look ridiculous.
Unfortunately, job seekers can look ridiculous when they rush to apply for jobs without tailoring their resumes. It’s a real pet peeve of most hiring professionals, including Larry Harris, a Minneapolis-based recruiter and President of American Consulting (americanconsultingcompany.com)
“Why don’t candidates customize every resume they send out, to fit the job they’re applying for? That makes my job a lot easier when I forward that resume to my client, the hiring manager.”
According to Tony Haley, Director of UK-based Fenton Chase International (fentonchase.com), most resumes come across as generic, with no consideration about a particular position or company.
“The most surprising group of candidates who do this is Sales Managers and Sales Directors. These people spend their days reviewing resumes from candidates and yet when it comes to their own, they cannot sell themselves,” says Haley.
Solution?
Customize, customize, customize.
Every company, every position, every manager reading your resume — they’re all different. So tailor your resume for every position you apply for. Bring out the details of your experience that are most relevant to each opportunity and company.
2) Don’t Be Boring
One of the worst sins you can commit with a resume is to be boring. The rule of thumb is simple: If they snooze, you lose (because your resume will go in the trash).
Resumes get boring when you fill them full of jargon, or dry job descriptions, or a lack of specific results, according to Haley.
“Consider the reader. Remember, the people reading your resume might not be that proficient at it. If they cannot see what they are looking for almost immediately, they might reject it, and if it’s full of technical jargon, they might not understand it,” says Haley.
Solution?
An easy way to eliminate dull wording from a resume is to read it aloud to 2-3 friends. If eyes glaze over or brows furrow, you’ve likely lost your audience. Revise the resume until it holds your friends’ attention all the way through.
Haley offers another way to create a compelling resume: “Use the ‘So, what?’ test. Any sentence on a resume that causes a reader to think ‘So, what?’ probably means it’s waffle. Reword it or take it off.”
3) Don’t Forget The Cover Letter
You wouldn’t want to alienate anyone who could help you get a job, would you?
Yet, that’s just what you do when you forget to send a cover letter with your resume. Because a missing cover letter creates extra work for busy hiring professionals, as they try to figure out what job you’re applying for and how you heard about it.
Solution?
Write and include a cover letter with every resume, including those you send by email.
Even a one-line cover letter in an email is better than nothing, according to Larry Harris: “You could simply write, ‘I’m applying for your telemarketing software sales position. I spent five years doing that exact job. I’d be perfect for it!”
Here’s hoping these tirades and tips from hiring professionals will help you write a better resume and cover letter next time you apply for that dream job.
Now, go out and make your own luck!

Brenda Hill’s passion for the world of writing and her experiences as an editor, proofreader and educator have definitely worked exceptionally well together to develop her book - Ten Times Guilty. This suspense thriller is truly an outstanding novel. I do not mean to sound cliché when I say that I had difficulty setting aside this review project. In fact, for two days I had forgotten about lunch entirely!
Sergeant Reese and his partner, Captain Cooper, are on the case of a serial rapist and stalker. Tracy Micheals, a young single mother from a neglected childhood, is struggling to make a better life when she is brutally assaulted and terrorized by a stalker. Sergeant Reese suspects Tracy’s attacker is the same man he is hunting for – but so far, none of the surviving victims are willing to break through their terror and help the police bring the mad-man in. Tracy knows in her heart that Reese is the only one who can save her life and lovable Suzy Banning is the one person who can save her mind. But does she dare to let them help her?
The author displays her skill right from the first few sentences, which really grabbed hold of me, dragged me into the story and would not let me go. The novel has incredible insight to the daily troubles that rape victims endure. From medical procedures and healing – both physically and mentally – all were well done without being too technical. Historical and present-day societal views of rape are discussed with clarity and understanding. I loved how she portrayed the support systems and enjoyed following along with the police who chased clues along the trail. The level of suspense was consistent throughout the book and each character’s inner battles were clearly portrayed. Brenda Hill certainly deserves to sit among the ranks of best-selling writers like Nora Roberts (Carolina Moon), William Diehl (Thai Horse) and Trevanian (Shibumi)!

Whether you are looking for fun shoes for the spring or summer or are heading for a warm vacation and in need of vacation apparel for your feet, we have two words for you: flip flops. They are the perfect traveling shoe. They are comfortable, cool and versatile as you can wear them with jeans, capris, shorts or a dress depending on their color or embellishments.
We have found that, no matter what your hobby, outfit or interests, there is a flip flop out there waiting for you. By surfing the web, we found themed flip flops with such themes as nautical, musical, floral or whimsical. You can find flip flops for your favorite professional or college sports teams. Basically if you can imagine it, you can find it.
The beauty of flip flops is that they are lightweight and don’t take up a lot of space, so you can pack two or three pairs and not take up any more room than one pair of shoes. If you pack a neutral color such as white or black or if you have a pair with a variety of colors such as colored buttons or ribbon you might only have to take one pair of flip flops on your trip, leaving room in your suitcase for more clothes or more souvenirs.
If you have searched the web, but still haven’t found the flip flops of your dreams, you can buy embellishments to make your own decorated flip flops. You can buy a flip clip that clips on the strap of your flip flops and that way you can move it from flip flop to flip flop as you change shoes. Many craft stores now have a small section of flip flop embellishments since flip flops are so popular now. You can decorate your flip flops with buttons, feathers, ribbon, jewels, seashells and more. Most of the embellishments come with easy instructions so that even the most craft challenged person can decorate their flip flops with little to know problems.
Flip flops come in different heights from very flat to platforms. Many name brands have hopped on the flip flop band wagon including Sketchers, Old Navy and other designer brands. They also come in different price points from 99 cents to over $300 depending on your taste and pocketbook. So whether you are traveling to the mountains, the beach or just heading to the mall or a casual day at work, there is a flip flop just waiting for you.
