Helping Your Child Cope With A Long-Term Illness

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

All children will likely have many different health problems
during infancy and childhood: the flu, chicken pox, broken
bones, stitches, ear infections, to name a few. For most
children, these problems are mild – they come and go without
incident and with little disruption in a child’s daily life or
routine. A chronic long-term medical problem is different and
often doesn’t come alone, as children with serious medical
illnesses are at risk of developing associated emotional
problems. Learning to live with a chronic medical condition can
be very challenging for a child, for parents, and for siblings
and friends, and can lead to feelings of anger, fear and
depression.

The way children react to diagnosis with a chronic illness
depends on several factors, including the child’s personality,
the specific illness, family emotional dynamic, and the child’s
age and emotional maturity.

A smaller child may react aggressively as they begin to cope
with changes in schedule due to hospital visits and all the new
found pampering, and special attention. In usual development,
young children are beginning to assert their sense of
independence. Dealing with their illness may challenge their
developing self-image and cause the child to feel out of control
of their world. They counter lack of control over their world by
challenging limits set by parents. A young child can also sense
the difference in the attention now being lavished on him / her.
This special attention may feel much different to the child and
may cause them to react negatively in an attempt to stop the
pampering.

The adolescent, in the midst of healthy adolescent behavior, may
react to a diagnosis much as they would any other factor which
inhibits their control – by challenging authority and rebelling
against family and friends. It is common for a teenager to
choose to discontinue all medical treatments and medications. It
is important to help your teenager gain a sense of control of
their disease management and respect their decisions, while
guiding them to safer decisions.

Let’s take a look at Laura:

Laura is 9 yrs old. She had always been an energetic child who
had maintained a healthy weight since pre-school. Over the past
few months, Laura has lost weight, has become lethargic and
frequently complained she was hungry and thirsty. Laura’s doctor
diagnosed her with insulin-dependent, or Type I, diabetes.

Laura is frightened. Her only knowledge of this disease is
watching grandpa give himself his insulin shot. She would often
run from the room due to her fear of needles.

Laura’s initial treatments must be managed in a clinical
environment until her glucose is better managed. While in the
hospital she refuses to eat and eventually refuses all visitors.
The emotional stress that she experiences only adds to the
inability to control her diabetes.

Concerned that her emotional state is indicative of depression,
Laura’s medical team decides to have her evaluated by the mental
health team. Laura cooperates for the visit and recommendations
were provided to her doctor.

Laura is asked to attend group sessions for children with
diabetes and begins to see children in similar situations.
Through her sessions, she is encouraged to communicate her fears
and concerns to her family, which are received openly and with
love and support. While in the hospital, Laura’s grandmother
taught her to knit which had a tremendous impact upon her
ability to move forward. Her knitting was a new found strength.

Here are some ways to assist your child when faced with chronic
illness:

• Communicate: Children need age-appropriate honesty
about their illness and treatment

• Self-evaluate: Keep yourself in check; your child
understands verbal and non-verbal messages regarding the illness

• Support: Build upon your child’s strengths.

• Consult: Rely upon your child’s medical team for
expertise

Cash From Another Source

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

Many professionals earn an income that is only sufficient for their living. They work hard in order to have money to finance their daily activities. From this income they take the payments for their bills, personal expenses, foods, transportation, hobbies, as well as their savings and investments. They need income in order to survive. But their income is only sufficient for daily living. What if they need money to finance their unexpected losses or expenses? Where do they get this money in order to pay all of these bills?

Other people would borrow money from their friends or colleagues and pay it with interest in order for them to pay for these unexpected payments. Others would take money from their savings; some would pawn their jewelry and some do worse than that: they steal money from other people. But there are ways to obtain money for these kinds of contingencies that are not costly as these other ways. Some of it can be attained from a loan in an insurance policy if the policy has its existing cash values. The other source of money for contingencies is what we call cash from structured settlements. This can help you sell your structured settlements and convert it into cash in the times of uncertainties.

In this unpredictable time, we should prepare for the unknown. We should set aside money that will be available in times of contingency. We should put up a contingency fund in our investment portfolio. This will serve as our other source of fund in times that we need money. These funds should be separated from our savings and investments. Most people do this. They save money, but when the time comes that they feel they need it, they withdraw it from their investments. The greatest enemy that we are facing in this kind of approach is ourself. Eventually we’ll end up saving nothing at all.

In handling funds, we should be systematic about it. If we want to be prepared in the face of uncertainty, we should have a separate account intended only for contingencies so that it will not mixed with our savings. In this case, we can control our withdrawals and eventually we can save for the future.

Flexible Estimation in Math

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

Adults use rounding and estimation in their everyday lives. They approximate the temperature, the cost of items, the time, and even their age. Consider this conversation:

“How much did it cost to fix your car?”

“Six hundred bucks!”

Without any words such as: about, approximately, around, roughly, or nearly, it can be assumed that the second person rounded the actual cost. Before they had their car fixed, they probably received an estimated cost of the repair from the shop. Adults experience rounding and estimation skills in their daily lives. Children need to learn these important skills partly because they often hear estimation and use estimation, but more importantly, it helps to solidify math learning by teaching them the idea of reasonableness.

Even though rounding and estimating are related, there is a significant difference. Rounding involves converting a known number into a number that is easier to use. Estimation is an educated guess of what a number should be without knowing the actual number. In the conversation above, it is unlikely that the second person remembered the actual price of the bill; they likely rounded the number at the time, so they could better remember it.

Children usually learn rounding as an explicit skill, often with the purpose of estimating the answers to math questions. They commonly use estimation to check the reasonableness of an answer by either estimating ahead of time or after they have completed the question. Students run into difficulty when estimating because they don’t have the intuitive sense that adults do to break the rules.

For the uninitiated, the idea of rounding is fairly simple - decide where to round the number (e.g. the hundreds place), either keep the digit at the rounding place the same or round it up, and replace the digits to the right with zeros. The decision to keep the digit the same or to round it up is based on everything that comes after the digit. If it is less than half, the digit remains the same; if it is greater than half, the digit is increased by one; if it is exactly half, the digit remains the same if it is even and increases by one if it is odd. For example, to round 638 to the nearest hundred, you would base your decision on the “38″ portion of the number. Since it is less than half (50), the digit in the hundreds place remains the same, and the 38 is changed to zeros, so the rounded number is 600. If the question is to round 7500 to the nearest thousand, you would round up to 8000. 8500 also rounds to 8000, but 8501 rounds to 9000. Hopefully, this illustrates that rounding follows a strict set of rules that often cause difficulties for children in estimation.

To give you an idea of how following the rounding rules can be problematic in estimation, consider the question 7359 divided by 82. The first difficulty is deciding what place to round to. Let’s say that the student decides to round to the nearest hundred in the first number and the nearest ten in the second number, thus the question is now 7400 divided by 80. At this point some students might resort to a calculator, others to long division, and others might stare confusedly at their paper. An adult with more intuitive sense might look at the numbers and recognize that if she rounded 7359 to 7200, it would be fairly simple to divide by 80 (because 72 divided by 8 is easy).

Many people develop an ability to estimate both by following the rules and by breaking the rules of rounding. Many children need to be taught these skills, so there is a genuine purpose to their estimation rather than just another question to answer. Estimation should be thought of as a tool to quickly determine whether an answer is reasonable or not. One way of teaching estimation for this purpose is by allowing students to break the rounding rules and find an easy question that they can do in their head. In the question 3564 - 2801, rounding to the nearest hundred results in 3600 - 2800, but 3700 - 2700 is much easier to handle, and it is not so far off the real answer. If the purpose of estimating was to get as close to the real answer as possible, you might as well use a calculator to check your answer instead.

Parents can help develop students’ estimation skills by regularly asking real questions. For instance, ask them how long they think it will take to get to hockey practice (time), have them add up the cost of the groceries as you are shopping (money), get them to count the number of people in one area of the mall and have them estimate how many people are in the whole mall (multiplication or addition). Educators should make estimation a regular part of the problem solving process. In a science investigation, students make hypotheses and predictions, so why not make an estimate in a math problem? Students can develop their estimation skills by answering questions on worksheets and comparing their estimated answers to the actual answers. http://www.math-drills.com has thousands of worksheets with answer keys that you could use for this purpose.

Remember these rules for estimation: (i) KISS - keep it simple silly, (ii) break the rounding rules if necessary, (iii) ensure students see a purpose for estimation, (iv) give students a lot of practice and experience with estimation and rounding, (v) include estimation in problem solving and other daily math work. The main rule for parents and teachers: support your students and be flexible!

Finding That Perfect Mini Skirt

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

Where do you find that perfect mini skirt that you can afford? Finding any article of clothing can be a challenge, especially if, like me, you need it at a reasonable price. It may seem like a mini skirt is one of those things you can just find anywhere, but believe me, that is not necessarily the case when it comes to finding one at a good price. I have found, though, that there are three places you should look before you make that final purchase. For that perfect and affordable mini skirt, check online, in a department store, and in the second hand store.

The first place to look for mini skirt would be on the internet. Many department stores and clothing retailers have websites that offer mini skirts for sale. These sites often have special online only deals that can assist you in finding the price you are looking for. Be sure to go to a search engine and seek out mini skirts as well. There are sometimes retailers that only exist on the Internet that will have better prices on clothing than even mainstream retailers might.

The second place to look for a mini skirt at a good price would be at a department store, physically. Often times at a clothing stores, there are discount or clearance racks with clothing, including mini skirts, that may offer even better prices than you found online. The other advantage to a store’s physical location is that you will be able to pick up, try on, and feel the mini skirt to know if you like the way the fabric or stitching is in it. Either way, a department store location or retailer is a stop you really should make in your search for a mini skirt at a good price.

The third place to scope out for a mini skirt is one that may not be for everyone. Some people are uncomfortable with second hand stores, but they can be fantastic for getting a good price on an article of clothing that you want. You have to keep an eye out and find a piece that is in good condition and of a good brand, but you would be surprised what you will see at a good second hand store. A similar place to look that is not quite second hand is an overstock store. Many stores now take clothing from larger retailers that have been overstocked. They get a discounted price and pass that along to you. You may find a great mini skirt at an overstock store that is a name brand and just what you want only at half the price.

Finding a perfect mini skirt at just the right price can be a difficult proposition. You don’t want to buy just any brand to save a buck, but you also aren’t made of money. Take the time to search all three of these places to find the what you need. Check the internet first, the department store, then either a second hand or overstock store to see if you can catch a deal at just the right moment. Take your time, do your research and you will be surprised at how great a deal you just might find on the mini skirt you want.

Web Hosting 101

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

The Internet is probably one of the most valuable tools
of communication that man has ever invented in the last decade.
Since time immemorial, man has been constantly in communication
with the world around him. From his dear relatives, to his
favored peers, and even with the environment that he lives in.
And this would not be possible without the people equipped with
the knowledge of web hosting.

Because of this, man is in perpetual communication. Since
then communication has always been associated with the words
time and urgency. This was true because the time element in
delivering the post was crucial especially during the great
American Civil War. Responses were held at a minimum of two
weeks for the replenishment of arms and men, and the element of
time was always taken into consideration.

And because of this need, man further developed and pushed
forward with the ultimate goal of delivering messages at
the fastest time possible. Through the hardened effort of the
people inside and outside the field of communication various
ways of reaching people and places were invented and discovered
throughout the development of the modern society.

Telegrams and telegraphs, Morse code messages, short wave
radio frequency, and eventually the telephone, the mobile phone,
the computer and of course the Internet. Throughout the ages,
the internet was the most real time form of letter delivery
system man has ever invented. Emails or electronic mails can
circumnavigate the world over a hundred times in just one day.
And the number of people being connected by the World Wide Web
is truly enormous.

Because of this, there are certain times of the day when the
internet service providers here and around the world are
forced into disallowing some people access to the connection
because of the massive traffic the information superhighway has
to carry on a single line. This technology has reached far more
people than what was originally thought of. Since a lot of
people regularly go online to surf the net, shop, research, meet
people and just plain hang out and chill, the idea of putting
your business online is a very practical idea. On a regular day
almost half of waking world go online at the almost the same
time. What this could possibly mean to a business person is that
the market they are after can be reached at a bigger scope at
one time. And that being the case putting a SALE sign on the
information superhighway would make lots and lots of waves for
your business. The key there is to go online and find a company
that can do web hosting for your business.

Web hosting by the way, is the way of uploading your web
site or webpage to the internet. This is done by looking for a
web hosting service and having your webpage uploaded through
their server. The server will carry your webpage just like
putting up a store or a house on a vacant lot. Web hosting is
the lot. To have your webpage web hosted instead of putting up
your own is the most practical way to do it.

One because, maintaining a running server for your
website alone can cost more than what you really want to spend.
But to look at the brighter side of things, having a web hosting
firm do this for you can transform those internet surfers into
potential sales. The advantages of having your business hooked
up online through web hosting companies are numerous; one is
that web hosting is actually much more practical than to launch
an all out advertising campaign through conventional and
traditional means.

Just try to remember some of the important things when
trying to look for a good web hosting company. Look closely at
the web hosting contract because some of these offer a trial
period so make sure you take advantage of the free web hosting
period.

8 Tips: How to Keep Your Personal Communication from Suffering from Your Fear of Speaking in Public

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

Yesterday, during a phone consultation with a long-time client, she was telling me the myriad ways that she felt her communication with everyone suffered from her discomfort with speaking in public.

She recalled a painful episode in her teen years which left her feeling that she was not entitled to communicate her ideas because her ideas had little originality or value. In fact, she is a deeply thoughtful person whose train of thoughts is unconventional and utterly fascinating. The world would benefit from being exposed to her original and comprehensive viewpoints.

With her permission, I jotted down some of the problems she was encountering along with the remedies I suggested. I will present them here, from time to time, as things you may want to give some thought to.

In conversation with her husband, she seemed never to get to the point of her ideas. She was afraid that if she took more than a milli-second to articulate her thoughts, her impatient husband would simply tune out and walk away. It’s happened before.

I suggested that she prepare her important personal communications in much the same way I teach clients to prepare their speeches. (Let me switch now from talking to her to talking to you, personally.)

The point of this preparation is to clarify thoughts and give you a framework on which to hang your entire conversation. And as you practice this technique you’ll find that you gain a tremendous amount of confidence simply by being prepared, rather than flying off by the seat of your pants into what could be a life-changing talk.

1.Before having an important conversation, sit down in a quiet place and write down the three most important points you want to talk about. Yup, only three.

2.Write one or two sentences about each one.

3.Now choose the most important word of each point.

4.Then choose the most important phrase. Work with that word and phrase to modify it to make it clearer, stronger, more persuasive, more whatever it is you want to make it.

5. Decide which of your 3 points is actually your most important. (Sometimes as you do this exercise your focus
will change. If it seems valid, go with it.)

6. Support each of your 3 important points with a short paragraph.

7. Put it all together and make any changes you want to make.

8. Practice it OUT LOUD! This is probably the most difficult step of all for someone who is shy of speaking, but it is crucial that you do this. You don’t want to be surprised by the sound of your own voice saying these things you feel deeply.

Yes, I know this is a lot of work. But what you probably don’t realize yet the huge payoff you’ll enjoy.
Once you feel organized and can clearly see the validity of your communication your confidence will take a welcome leap. And as you practice this technique for many different circumstances it’ll come more easily and naturally.

People respect someone who thinks succinctly and communicates clearly. You’ll enjoy being the recipient of that respect!

How to Get Free Garbage Bags

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

The scenario:

A newlywed couple moves into their new home. After a couple of
months, they realize that they have many more garbage bags than
they need. However, they have not bought any garbage bags since
they got married. Where did all of the garbage bags come from?

Your mission:

See how fast you can arrive at the correct solution by using the
following clues: 1) The garbage bags were not a wedding gift 2)
The couple did not bring any garbage bags with them when they
moved 3) The bags were not in the couple’s new home when they
arrived 4) The fact that the two people are newlyweds is
irrelevant 5) The type of home that the couple moved into is
irrelevant 6) The bags were made of plastic 7) People gave the
bags to the couple, but 8) The bags were not any type of gift 9)
The bags are not “traditional” garbage bags 10) The bags came in
many colors.

The solution:

Have you figured out the solution yet? The garbage bags are
actually plastic bags from grocery and other types of stores!
The couple only has small garbage cans in their home, and the
plastic bags fit perfectly inside of them. Plus, the handles
make them very extremely easy to tie shut when they become full.
The trash cans need to be emptied more often than larger cans
would, but that small inconvenience is worth the savings. Yearly
garbage bag expenses: $0.00!

In addition to the monetary reasons, reusing grocery bags is a
simple way to recycle and eliminate the waste created by
throwing away the plastic bags inside of another garbage bag.
Once you have a good supply of plastic bags, consider taking an
empty canvas bag or backpack with you to the grocery store.
Check the bag with a store employee when you enter so that no
one thinks that you are shoplifting. Then, when you are done
shopping, skip getting a new bag and load your purchases into
your own reusable bag instead.

A few other super-easy ways to save money and recycle:

Save scrap paper. Save any papers that have nothing on the back
or large blank spaces. Advertising flyers, old work papers and
school papers all work well. You can cut the pages into smaller
pieces if they would be more convenient for you. Put the paper
in a stack or a box with a pen nearby, and you’ll never have to
scramble when you need to jot down something. Spots near the
base of your house phone or beside the computer are both great
locations.

Save sturdy boxes from food, electronics, mailers, etc. Cover
them with the Sunday comics or some previously-used wrapping
paper. Label each box with a marker and use as stackable storage
for recipes, comic books or just about anything else.

Save large, empty plastic soda and juice bottles. Fill them with
water, and store in your freezer. Having less open space in your
freezer will help it run more efficiently. And when you need
more room in the freezer, simply take out one of the bottles of
ice!

Save torn and worn out clothing. Tear or cut them into pieces
and use as rags for cleaning and dusting.

Did Redhat Linux or Windows Xp Computed 2 Power 9,999,999?

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

If you ask any computer expert about the advantage of computer
use, two of their answers will be: The numeric computation capability, and the speed at which any task is done.

There many more advantages for using computers, but I will stress on the numeric computation aspect of those advantages.

I have done a test involving numeric computing to test the power of my Central Processing Unit of my computer. What I also did the test using Windows Xp and Redhat Linux, which are both installed on the same computer.

One of the reasons why I did the test, that I am about to explain, was my urge to sense the power of computer by looking at the screen.

Another reason was, I was getting fed up with Hearing about computer specs, without even knowing what they can do, or mean.

Here is an example:

Pentium II, 350 MHZ, Ram=256MB
Pentium III, 500 MHZ , Ram=512MB

and so on…

What is the power of the above specs?. How to approximate how many times the above P III is more powerful than the P II?.

Here is what I did:

I used my Pentium II, Ram=288MBs computer that has Windows XP and Linux installed on the same Hard disk in the same computer.

I tried to use the maximum numeric computational power of the computer by trying to get the result of multiplying the number ‘2″ by itself 99 times and every time I got a result, I added another “9″ until the computer can’t handle the numbers anymore.

Using Windows Xp, I ran the calculator by typing “calc.exe” in the Run box. Then, I used the scientific calculator to handle the exponential calculation.

The most I was able to compute was 2 power 99,999. When I tried 2 power 999,999, Windows XP resulted in an error saying: “Invalid input for function”

Then, I rebooted my computer, and picked Redhat Linux to run on the same computer instead of Windows Xp. Once Linux prompted me to login, I used the mathematical utility Linux has. It is called by typing “bc” at the command line.

Once I ran “bc”, I typed 2^99,999, the same maximum number I used in Windows Xp calculator . In about 2 seconds, i got the result.

Then, I tried a bigger number, 2^999,999 which Windows Xp scientific calculator could not handle. In about 5 seconds, I got the result on the screen. then, I added one more digit to compute 2^9,999,999 which is 2 multiplied by itself 10 Millions times minus one.

I waited about 35 minutes, then Linux BC application produced the result on the screen by showing few screens full of numbers from left to right, and
top to bottom.

Now you probably thinking, how does this computing relate to the performance of the CPU, or the whole computer as a whole.

Here is the answer:

What I discussed so far is using certain numbers to get the result of the formula 2 power 9,999,999. While running the calculation using “bc” in Linux. there another command to track the running processes in real time.

So, as you are running the calculations, you use another utility called “top” in RedHat Linux.

Once you run “top”, the system shows you on the screen a list of applications, with all details about the resources consumed for each. The list is updated every few seconds, and each line shows the name of application.

So, to see the computation performance of “bc”, you look up the line that says “bc”. Then, you look on the same line that will show you information about “bc” like:

1-the time it is been running
2-The memory consumption in % of total ram
3-How much CPU power is being used for the application in %
and more variables.

You can watch the screen for the updated time the application
has been running for the current moment. Once the calculation is presented on the screen, you will know the calculation is done. You look at the time you just recorded right before the application ended.

The time the application took to calculate the formula: 2^9,999,999 and the memory used, in addition to the CPU power will give you an approximate idea about what your computer can do.

Also, you can use the above test to compare two computers and get and idea about the power.

Here is an example:

If computer P II, Ram=256Mbs took 30 minutes to compute 2^9,999,999; then, you ran the same test 2^9,999,999 with P III, Ram=512Mbs that took about 15 minutes, which is 1/2 the time it took before.

Then, you can approximate that the power of P III is about twice that of P II. Do, you get the idea?

In summary, there is an easy way for you to explore the power and performance in front of you, right on the screen. I was able to achieve this task by using Linux, and Windows XP that are installed on the same computer. I also found out that Linux can do better computation that Windows Xp.

A Great Plant For Hilltown Township Pennsylvania

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

Our farm, Highland Hill Farm, is located in solid clay in
Pennsylvania near Hilltown Township close to Doylestown. We
therefore like plants that grow well in clay. An arborvita, the
Green Giant is our favorite. Here is why. The hardiness zone for
the Green Giant Arborvita is from zones 5 to 8. Its evergreen
with rapid growth rates that in ideal conditions can be up to 3
feet per year. Site requirements for the green giant is sun to
partial shade, moist well drained soil but does well in clay,
and needs protection from wind . Its texture is fine with its
form conical being narrow to broadly pyramidal, reaching from 50
to 80′ in height to 15 to 20 feet in width. The leaf is rich
green graceful foliage. It keeps its foliage color in the
winter. The Green Giants flowers/fruit are .5″ erect female
cones. The Green Giant has strong wood, casts dense shade, and
has cinnamon red bark when young. This arborvita does not
tolerate salt spray. This arborvita should outlive even your
children.
