People Are Crazy… and Everyone Is A Racer

Friday, August 17th, 2007

…And everyone is a racer. If you doubt that, you’ve obviously never driven in New York City during rush hour. Look closely at the driver of that Japanese luxury car. He’s just as miffed as you the racer is at having to drive fifty-five miles per hour when the speedometer on the car clearly reads one hundred and fifty. Why can’t we drive it at that speed if the car can come close to it. Man, just look at him fiddling with the knobs pretending to be tuning the radio into a station. We racers know what he is really doing is setting the frequency of his imaginary laser beam roadblock remover system. You know the ones; they make little bomb sounds as we pretend we are obliterating our foes on the drive home.

If you really want to annoy him, honk your horn, tailgate him for a few seconds then cut in front of him. When he reaches his boiling point, slam on your brakes and drive slower than you were both going previously. then apply your brakes and drive slower than you were driving before you cut him off. His typical response will be one of anger, an anger borne of the pent-up frustrations of living in a high tech world and being legislated into a low-tech existence. Our driver will invariably stab the gas pedal and swerve out of the lane in an attempt to pass you back. You, in turn, speed up, knowing that his intent is to block pass you at the first opportunity, then brake check you just so you get the message.

And so this high-speed game of “chicken” unfolds on any highway others will graciously move over to let the two road-warriors carry on with the spectacle. I’ve participated in a more than a few such duels myself though lately I choose to be a bystander to other people’s road rage. This emotionally charged ego-tripping could be very dangerous to anyone near the scene.

Society says we should be punished for breaking their law of a maximum velocity of fifty-five miles per hour (in New York at least). Most racers will try to get away with as much as we can, just like on the track and usually have the skills to pull it off. The typical driver lacks all of the needed skills and courage to indulge themselves and so after one or more two hundred dollar speeding tickets, the potential racer’s lust for life is usually squashed flatter than Spongebob in the Arizona desert. They usually go home more frustrated, angrier, and two bills poorer. I’m glad I race motorcycles; I’m glad I have a family of people who know and think and feel exactly as I do… we are fortunate to be real racers.

Drivers aren’t the only ones who are acting crazy either. Anyone who has walked or driven in Manhattan can attest to the fact that the craziest of all humans is not “Checkered Cabbus-Weavus”; that honor belongs to “Pedestrius Al-sue-yerbutt”, the dreaded New York City pedestrian.

No other form of life on the planet is capable of staring into the eyes of the errant tractor-trailer driver and then stepping nonchalantly into the path of his serpentine behemoth. If you’ve never seen eighteen thousand pounds of truck with all the wheels locked up you don’t know what you’re missing. The puff of blue smoke in the distance alerts one to the presence of “Pedestrius Al-su-yerbutt.”

While the truck driver shakes uncontrollably, trying to bring his heartbeat back below the three hundred mark, “Pedestrius Al-su-yerbutt” flashes an ear to ear grin. And why shouldn’t they, they’ve just looked fear and death in the face and walked away unscathed. Others can only look on in amazement; children will point in their direction with wonder and awe. They are momentarily idolized as they relish fifteen seconds worth of their fifteen minutes of fame. They will be on the tongues of everyone who saw their gutsy moves,

“Holy cripes, did you see that?”

I’m glad I race motorcycles; I’m glad I have a family of people who know and think and feel exactly as I do… we are fortunate to be real racers and have our outlet.

Before we forget that this is a moto-cross story, let me get to the heart of the matter. The point is simply how much we as off road riders and racers have to be grateful for. Unlike the road-rager and “Pedestrius Al-sue-yerbutt,” we don’t have to drive our cars at one hundred and twenty miles per hour, nor do we have to tempt fate by stepping in front of speeding trucks just to feel that surge of adrenaline. Thank God we are real racers… I do. We aren’t as unlucky as the folks who live out the two examples of non-racers.

We are the normal; we can take out our frustrations on machines that were designed to be the healers of our pressures and frustrations. We have moto-cross and the woods to keep us sane. How lucky we are indeed. I’m glad I race motorcycles; I’m glad I have a family of people who know and think and feel exactly as I do… I am fortunate to be among real racers. So when next you are privy to witness any of the afore mentioned dramas, you’ll know… people are crazy, and everyone is a racer.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A RENTAL WITH A ROOMMATE

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Steps:

1. Talk to your roomie-to-be before starting the application
process. Find out if there’s anything in your future roommate’s
rental history that would throw a wrench into getting approval
for both of you.

2. Tell the landlord or property manager exactly how many people
will be living in the property. Each of you will have to fill
out a rental application.

3. Make sure each of you has all your rental history information
together. This includes previous addresses, as well as phone
numbers of previous landlords.

4. Fill out the paperwork completely and honestly.

5. Ask if the lease can be worded so that rental
responsibilities between you and your roommate are divided. This
is a legal way to protect yourself if you meet your half of the
rent but your roommate doesn’t. (In other words, you don’t want
to be responsible for the difference.)

Warnings:

Be sure the names of everyone living in the rental property
appear on the lease. This ensures that everyone is equally
responsible for paying rent and meeting any other obligations
set forth in the lease.

“Attitudinal Isometrics (TM)… A Workout For Building Strength
of Character”

===========================================================

>From the early nineteen thirties to the mid-sixties, a
significant fraction of magazines in the English-speaking world
ran a series of linked ads. They all showed the wasp-waisted,
wide-shouldered, bulging-biceped, swimtrunk- wearing Charles
Atlas standing in various poses and claiming: “I can make a new
man of you in 7 days!” Thousands of men responded to the ads.
Most ended up disappointed - not with the exercise system they
received, but with their own failure to persevere beyond the
initial seven-day period! Presumably, they had never read the
words of Dr Samuel Johnson: “Great works are performed, not by
strength, but perseverance”.

Got a dream to fulfil? Got a problem to solve? Got a corporate
entity to build up? Then I’ve got an exercise system to help
you! I call it Attitudinal Isometrics. Schematically, it looks
like this:

CORRECT THINKING + CORRECT ATTITUDE + CORRECT ACTION = HERCULEAN
SUCCESS!

It is not, however, a magic formula. Some who try it will end up
disappointed - not because it doesn’t work, but because they
won’t work at it!

All exercise systems involve movement. Attitudinal Isometrics
involves mental movement, and can be analyzed into four basic
dynamics:

from –> negativity… to –> positivity from –> reactivity…
to –> proactivity from –> self-interest… to –> public
service from –> inconsistency… to –> constancy

Practised regularly, Attitudinal Isometrics promotes strength of
character. And without that, we can’t really expect to succeed
at anything, can we?

1. WILDE WISDOM The first exercise in the Attitudinal Isometrics
gymnasium is the movement from negativity to positivity. Oscar
Wilde had a first-rate piece of advice for the negativist: “Get
up and out, young man - the day is bursting with moments!”

A moment is an infinitely short window of time - yet it’s the
only window open to us! Positive action can occur only in the
present moment (rather than in the irredeemable past or
unknowable future). Therefore, the time for sowing the seeds of
achievement is now. A microsecond’s delay equals a harvest of
opportunities lost!

Of course, a positive attitude doesn’t guarantee success; but it
does keep our eyes, ears, mind and body focused on the goal.
Future outcomes won’t just happen - we have to get up and out,
and intercept the fruitful moments that the day is bursting with!

2. PROACTIVITY VERSUS PROZAC The second Attitudinal Isometrics
exercise is the movement from reactivity to proactivity.
Supposing you have an unpleasant task to complete, and don’t
quite know how to start. What’s your usual procedure? Do you
picture the finished results and throw yourself into the task?
Or do you picture all the possible problems and throw yourself
into a depression? “Well, the truth is, Dr John,” I hear you
say, “some tasks just seem futile - especially when I’m not sure
whether I’ll succeed or not.” - Oh, really? Let me ask you this,
then: Why should your level of proactivity be dependent on your
skill in predicting the future?

Let’s be realistic: we can’t predict anything much. Outcomes of
events are cloaked in a veil of complexity; we can’t ever
foresee all the possible consequences - much less decide ahead
of time which one will occur. That being the case, the only
sensible option is to get started regardless! It’s a well-known
self-motivation technique: acting “as if” the desired outcome is
a foregone conclusion makes you less likely to engage a
psychological reverse-gear halfway through the task.

3. OTHERS BEFORE SELF The third Attitudinal Isometrics exercise
(and it has to be a practical exercise rather than a theoretical
one) is the movement from self-interest to public service - that
is, from a mindset focused on the self to one focused on others.
Perhaps you’ve always imagined that, in some future world where
you’ve attained your personal goals, you’ll then be in a
position to serve others, and thereby make the world a better
place…? Wrong! You’ll only get what you want by giving others
what they want. It’s an integral part of the course for success.

Nor do you need any special position to serve others. You do,
however, need a special mindset; and you have to develop it
first - before your personal goals can be attained.

The mental muscle that will empower you to serve others is
already part of your character. You simply need to exercise it
along the appropriate dynamic, using the appropriate mental
apparatus! Help out at a charity headquarters; take a senior
citizen to the shopping mall; work in a soup kitchen; set up a
church group in your community. Start with one hour a week, and
progress to ten. Consider it a form of existential tithing.
You’ll be amazed how you can transform the lives of others - and
feel better about yourself in the process!

4. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING CONSTANT The fourth and most
important dynamic in the Attitudinal Isometrics gym is the
movement from inconsistency to constancy. For most of human
history, people simply had to keep going, keep working, keep
adapting - just to survive. In the modern Western world,
however, things are somewhat easier. Result: a widespread
tendency to justify inaction today with the empty promise of
action tomorrow.

But tomorrow is the time to test your endurance. This evening is
the time to gather your energies. This hour is the time to
persevere. This minute is the time to galvanise your resolve.
This second is the time to practise your Attitudinal
Isometrics… And this moment… is the moment to start!

The Other Text Link

Friday, August 17th, 2007

If you have spent more than a few minutes studying search engine
optimization and web traffic building then you know that text
links are important — most especially one-way links from
quality sites.

So many people interested in building traffic to their sites
spend a lot of time, effort, and money building text links to
their sites. They purchase links in link directories, buy links
from brokers and site owners, and even swap links. Others try
different methods like forum posting, blog commenting, and
article writing.

But most of these people overlook one very easy and inexpensive
way to achieve one-way, often permanent, text links from quality
sites. What is this method of text linking? It is usually called
Ezine Advertising!

That’s right, just like pork is the other white meat, ezine
advertising is the other way to text link.

There are many advantages of ezine advertising when it comes to
text link building:

1. You get the added bonus of email marketing benefits

2. Text link surrounded by relevant content, your ad copy, that
you wrote specifically for that purpose

3. Limited outbound links competing with yours. Ezines only sell
a few ads per issue (many only sell one or two) so your text
link will be only one of a few.

4. When the issue is archived on the web (which is how you
achieve your permanent text link) the page is usually text-heavy
with the content that search engines love

5. The site where your permanent text link resides (the ezine
archives) is regularly updated and in turn regularly visited by
search engines

All these advantages roll into one additional bonus for you.
The text links appear to have developed organically and
naturally — not as so many traditional text links do — which
makes them even more powerful and effective in terms of traffic
building and search engine optimization.

And unlike so many text links which are purchased monthly or for
a limited time, an ezine ad is purchased for a particular issue
and will remain alive for the months or years that the issue is
archived. If you aren’t sure how long an ezine archives then
check their web site. Many ezines and newsletters archive for
years.

How Can I Stop Getting Spam?

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Are you getting too much spam? We all are, but if you’re a webmaster the word spam takes on a whole new meaning.

It’s not uncommon for the luckiest of email users to receive a dozen or so spam messages each day, while those of us who aren’t so fortunate receive hundreds.

The casual home user tends to be more fortunate, so this article is devoted to those of us with one or more website because webmasters are getting hit by spam … and hit hard.

The reason … a website doesn’t do you much good if you don’t give potential customers a way to contact you, and that normally means posting an email address on your website, where it is vulnerable to email address harvesting tools used by spammers. Domain registration records are also a common source used by spammers.

In order to conduct business online you now need to sift through the endless barrage of offers for herbal viagra, pornography, pyramid schemes, and so on.

With such a large volume of spam to contend with, it’s likely you’ve lost sales due to missing important emails that simply floated away in this sea of spam. And there’s no way to really calculate the cost of that lost business. If you’ve missed email then how can you ever know how much business you’ve lost?

If you want to solve the problem, you need to be proactive because the sad reality is that if you do nothing, it will only get worse until finally it reaches the point where your email account has become totally and completely unmanageable. Fortunately there are a few options available to you.

Securing Your Domain Registration Against Spammers

First let’s address the whois database, which is a publicly accessible database in which your domain registration record is listed … and that includes your email address. It’s not uncommon now for people to be spammed at a brand new email address within hours of registering a new domain.

Go Daddy http://www.godaddy.com is a domain registrar that now offers private domain registrations. At the time of writing this article, they are the only registrar who currently offers this service. Hopefully in time, other registrars will pick up on this idea and offer the service too.

With a private domain registration, which costs only a few dollars more than a regular registration, your contact information including your email address will not be publicly accessible in the whois database.

That’s guaranteed to cut down on spam quite significantly as this very important source of addresses that spammers use, will no longer provide your address to them.

If you don’t wish to obtain a private domain registration, then there is another option that will be equally effective. Set up a new email address that you use only for the purpose of providing registration information for your domain name. You can easily scan email sent to that address for messages from your registrar, and delete the rest without having to read it.

Securing Your Website Against Spammers

The other major source, and by far the biggest source of email addresses for spammers is of course the mailto links on your own website. Email address harvesting or extraction software as it’s known is cheap, easy to use, and readily available … and it’s very effective. That means there are a lot of spammers out there with easy access to your email address.

Chances are hundreds or even thousands of spammers using such software have already harvested your address. And what can you do about this? You need to provide a way for your customers to reach you by email, or you’ll lose business. There are steps you can take to prevent your email address from being harvested and used by spammers though, while still providing legitimate visitors to your site with a way to email you.

One solution is to make all the mailto links on your site point to a form instead, which will still provide a means for people to send you email. Provided you use a CGI script that doesn’t require the address to be embedded within the form itself, you can shield your address from email address extractors.

If you don’t want to require people to fill out a form to email you from your website, then you can get a little more creative. It is possible to put a mailto link on your site that when clicked will still launch the sender’s email program, and start a new message with your address in the To field … but without having to embed your email address in the mailto link where spam software can snatch it. Click below to see an example of how it works.

http://thewebhostcompany.com/cgi-local/email.cgi

It looks like a normal URL, and there’s clearly no email address anywhere in the link, but when clicked, instead of loading a web page in your browser as you may have expected, your email program opens up.

How’s that possible you might ask? Simple. A little magic with CGI using Perl or PHP will do the trick. A free copy of a script that does this is bundled with Postmaster Pro, available at http://www.postmasterpro.com which is discussed below.

What About Spammers Who Already Have My Address?

So far we’ve discussed a few fairly simple techniques designed to prevent spammers from obtaining your email address in the first place. But, how do you deal with the spam you’re already getting? Your address is already out there. The solution is to either block or filter.

For either, you’ll need software. For blocking, I recommend Postmaster Pro. If you prefer to filter then Spam Assassin is highly recommended. Both run on the server, so there is no need to download spam before filtering it out. That’s a huge time saver if you’re not yet on a high-speed connection. It also makes it a bit less likely you’ll end up downloading a virus since email from untrusted senders, i.e. spammers will be significantly reduced.

Spam Blocking Software

Postmaster Pro which is available at http://www.postmasterpro.com takes a novel approach to blocking spam. It only allows email to be delivered after people who’ve sent you email have been placed on an approved sender list. But the interesting thing is that people who send you email can put themselves on your approved list. This is done simply by clicking a link in an email that automatically gets sent to them the first time they send email to you, which is perfect for those of us who don’t know in advance whom we should put on the approved list, i.e. if you’re running a business online. It also makes building and maintaining such a list very simple.

Given the fact that spammers normally use invalid return addresses, and those who do use valid return addresses seldom read email that’s sent there, let alone respond to it (they receive thousands of failed delivery notifications, complaints, remove requests, and autoresponder messages every time they do a mailing) … it’s a very effective technique with no chance of blocking legitimate email, as is the case with filtering.

Spam Filtering Software

For those who would prefer to filter … Spam Assassin is perhaps the best option. It is available at http://www.spamassassin.org. Once you have Spam Assassin installed, it will provide you with very powerful and flexible filtering tools. Spam Assassin is a mature product, having been around for quite some time. If you’re going to filter, Spam Assassin is about as good as it gets.

As with any filter though, you do run the risk of missing legitimate email from time to time. There really isn’t a good way to tell how often this is happening unless you want to read all the email that gets filtered out, which negates the whole point of filtering. If you set your filters permissively enough though, you should be reasonably safe. For the first month or so after installing any filter, you should continue to read every single email in order to make sure it isn’t set too restrictively to allow legitimate email through.

By using the techniques mentioned in this article, you can take back your mailbox, and dramatically reduce, if not eliminate spam.

Napster Vs eMusic: My Search For The Best Music Download Service

Friday, August 17th, 2007

With the number of U.S. music fans downloading music online increasing by double digits yearly it’s become obvious that downloading is the new way to do music.

For sure there have been, and in fact continues to be issues with legal-vs-illegal but follow this very simple guideline and you don’t have to be concerned about the feds showing up at your door.

The bottom line here is just like in the real world DO NOT copy your music and sell or give those copies away to anyone. That’s where the file sharers go wrong.

It’s that simple.

With that often misunderstood bit of information cleared up I’m now going to contrast and compare a couple of the better and yes, perfectly legal online music download services.

Two of the best music download services I’ve had the opportunity to try out are eMusic and Napster.

What are the best features of each service?

Napster: Despite it’s rocky past the new Napster is a perfectly legal music download site and their full library of digital music, [over 2 million songs] is completely free to listen to. You only pay if you decide to download a song or two to your computer, iPod or other MP3 Player. And Napster has a variety of subscription options to choose from which means you’re sure to find a plan that’s right for you. Most users will be impressed with the overall depth and breadth of the Napster catalog. Very few searches turn up no results.

eMusic: All the tunes available through eMusic are legitimately licensed from record labels and artists, so you don’t have to worry about a midnight visit from the authorities here either. eMusic is now advertising that they have over 1,000,000 high quality MP3 files from 1,200 independent music labels. The collection is mostly filled out in the rock genre, but they also have an outstanding assortment of jazz and blues, as well as a surprisingly large selection of world music. I found the MP3 music downloads available through eMusic were of the highest quality.

What are the performance highlights of each service?

Both Napster and eMusic seem to be built for use by those with broadband connections. Neither one of them says so explicitly but it’s pretty clear. Besides, downloading files as large as even small music files is best done with a high speed internet connection.

How easy are these services to use?

Again both, Napster and eMusic offers a freely downloadable application for use in conjunction with their service. Both are just a few mouse clicks to download and could not be simpler to install. Each user interface is of course completely different from the other but both can be easily learned upon spending a few minutes playing with it.

What about value for the money, which is better?

Napster: Offers three levels of membership and service. At the minimal, free level, members can stream almost any track in the Napster catalog up to 5 times each. If you’re interested in downloading and having unlimited listening capability you’ll pay $9.95 per month. With either of these levels you’ll also have the option of purchasing a song outright for .99 each. If you use your music in conjunction with an iPod or other portable device it’s $14.95 per month to fill your device with unlimited downloads.

Throughout the Napster site at all levels of membership you have the ability to freely listen to :30 second samples of songs.

eMusic: Has three levels of membership as well. For $9.99 per month you get up to 40 downloads, for $14.99 you get 65, and for $19.99 per month you get 90 downloads. These are high quality MP3 downloads and are on a per month basis, and do not rollover. To borrow a term from the cell phone industry.

So which is better?

The million dollar question. I have to say it really depends on how you use and listen to music. With Napster your music is tied to your computer unless you purchase the track or entire CD outright at .99 per song. This differs greatly form eMusic where with either service level you actually download MP3 files so you do have the option of burning CD’s more freely.

I really like several things about each service but mainly with Napster the sheer size of their catalog is very enticing, and with eMusic being able to download burnable MP3’s is certainly a desirable feature.

Like I said, I guess it just comes down to what’s important to you in determining which service is right and will work best for you.

I’ve given you a point from which to start your thinking process here. For complete information on the eMusic download service goto http://www.smoothlee.com/emusic.htm now. Alternatively, you’ll find complete information on the Napster music download service at http://www.smoothlee.com/napster.htm

Reduce Depression With These Free Tips

Friday, August 17th, 2007

In this article, I am going to explain methods on how to reduce depression. There are ever increasing daily pressures facing people and it is very easy to become down and depressed. I am a person who was often feeling low, sorry for myself and basically was very unhappy, however I have now managed to pull my life around and am now able to cope and enjoy what life brings. I hope you enjoy reading the article and if you are one of the many people who suffer from depression, I hope the advice is beneficial.

My name is Stephen Hill and I am from England. Looking back on my life, as I often do, I now find it hard to believe the way in which I used to think and approach life. I was a very negative person, I would stress about seemingly everything and believed that I was so unfortunate compared to other people.

I would always be comparing my life with those of my friends and family. These people seemed to really enjoy life and did not seem to have a care in the world. I, on the other hand had many issues to deal, with which made life one big struggle. I was unable to talk fluently due to a stammering problem, this stammer caused me many traumas and made me into a very quiet and shy person. This issue alone made me very depressed and made socialising very difficult. I am sure you can imagine the effect it had on my self-confidence and self-esteem.

These were the other issues I had to contend with:

A constant battle with my weight, I was far to over-weight most of the time, this I believe was because I sought comfort in the way of food.

My height, I was the shortest male in my class in high school, this for whatever reason made me feel less of a man and less attractive to members of the opposite sex.

My bald patch, this seems so trivial now, however this area of my scalp where hair does not grow caused me many anxieties, especially when I was a teenager.

Enough is enough.

In my early twenties, I decided that I had had enough of being miserable and depressed. I wanted to be happy and content. I then made a decision to attempt to improve my life, I was going to hopefully achieve this by reading about successful people, and by learning more about depression, positive thinking and ways to improve self-confidence. I spent many months doing this and the results have changed my whole life.

What I needed to do, was not to compare my life to people just in my circle, but to compare it to everyone in the world. I started to read and find out about how people lived in different parts of the world. Watching the news each day would keep me abreast of current affairs. Some of the stories and the way in which people live came not so much as a shock, but as a wake up call to me. I would not want to swap my life with theirs, that is for sure.

The problems that I had or thought I had, were now so small compared to what other people have to cope with, and it actually made me feel quite grateful. I have a weight problem, this is something of my own doing and something which I can change, if I am determined enough. Even though I stammer, I can still converse, I may even be able to cure the stammer, which I now have. I was now suddenly feeling more positive and was now able to seek solutions to my issues.

I have now achieved fluency and am now at a weight that I am happy with, however I could not do anything about my lack of height or about the bald patch. This is not a worry to me, as I am now happy with my height and I show everybody who I meet my bald patch, like I am proud of it.

In conclusion, it is time to pull ourselves out of our depression by becoming stronger, by thinking in a more positive manner, by trying to find solutions to our problems and by realising that in fact we are one of the lucky ones.
