Recipes with Rosemary

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Rosemary is one of my favourite herbs – its clean, spiky scent pervading my kitchen takes me to the South of France on a warm summer’s day. It is the hardiest plant in my herb garden, surviving our driest summers and putting out new growth as soon as the winter rains begin. You can pick from it all year round and it has useful medicinal properties too.

I love Roast Lamb with generous amounts of rosemary and garlic tucked underneath as it cooks or else I take Nigella Lawson’s advice and mince the garlic and rosemary to a paste with some olive oil and tuck it into small incisions in the meat before cooking. After that the meat just cooks itself (as long as you remember to switch on the oven for it!) and you have a marvellous Sunday lunch for very little effort. A dash of red wine added to the juices from the roasting dish and warmed through gives you a ‘jus’ that any five star restaurant would be proud to own – do spoon off the excess fat first though. For a totally low effort lunch serve the roast lamb with a generous green salad and boiled new potatoes, or expend the effort you’ve saved with the meat on producing loads of crispy roast potatoes, baked butternut squash and tender green peas.

The following pasta sauce recipe came from experimenting with a recipe from Marcella Hazan’s Marcella’s Kitchen. To her tomato and rosemary pasta sauce I added some tuna to create a nutritious and delicious meal for my kids – the balsamic vinegar gives a mellow, rounded note to the sauce and is not in the least overpowering as I thought it might be.

Penne with Tuna, Tomato, Rosemary and Balsamic Vinegar

For 450g/1lb pasta
8 tablespoons olive oil
3 or 4 cloves garlic
2 sprigs rosemary
450g/1lb tinned tomatoes, drained and chopped
2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
1 tin of tuna drained

Put the olive oil, thinly sliced garlic and rosemary sprigs in a frying pan over a medium heat. When the garlic starts sizzling add the tomatoes, with salt and pepper and cook for 10-12 minutes.

When the pasta is just cooked – really al dente – drain and put back in the pan and toss with the sauce over the heat for 1 minute. Add the tuna, stir, then off the heat stir in the balsamic vinegar and serve immediately.

There is a wonderful recipe for a Rosemary Cake in Nigella Lawson’s book ‘Feast’. She allocates it to her Funeral Feast section. as rosemary has always been the herb of rememberance, but this cake is great for any occasion when a light, not too sweet, plain sponge is required. It has apple in it too and the combination of that and the rosemary, gives a moist but aromatic cake. A long sprig of rosemary adorns the top of the cake and as it cooks releases more aromatic oils into the cake. Try it.

To make use of rosemary’s health boosting properties try a cup of rosemary herbal tea. One sprig with a cup of boiling water poured over it and left to stand for five to ten minutes, makes a revitalising and stress-relieving tea. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and aids circulation, helps with stress, anxiety and depression and improves memory and concentration. It also is a useful source of easily absorbed calcium, far more effective than taking pills.

So plant a rosemary bush in your garden or in a pot on a balcony for your own free, energy-boosting calcium supplement!

Everyone Tells You To Get Referrals - Here’s How To Do It

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Everyone tells you to get referrals, that it’s the easiest way to build your business. But how many investment professionals do you know who get an abundance of referrals? Not too many. And how many producers work hard at it, but end up with little results? They join the board of a non-profit, they contribute to the symphony and get season tickets, and they hobnob in the “right” places. That’s a lot of work for uncertain results.

Successful referral gatherers simply have their clients bring them more people. Those few producers who have a continuous stream of referrals have discovered three things that you too can use to generate that continuous referral flow.

1. When starting off a new client relationship, you must ask them, “What will I need to do so that you tell all of your friends about me?” WRITE DOWN THE ANSWER AND THEN DO IT! Most clients will not say, “I want a 25% annual return,” or some other request that is impossible to honor. They will say something like, “I just want you to stay in touch every couple months, help me not to lose money and call back the same day when I call you.” You can certainly promise this and deliver it.

2. After 60-90 days, you set up a meeting with a client. You explain that the meeting is to do a review and for their assistance in developing your business. Tell them to bring their phone/address book.

At the meeting you read to them what they told you at the beginning of the relationship. You read them the requirement they stated in step #1 above. Then ask them if you have done what they required. They then see that you did what you promised and they will also. They will provide you referrals.

3. Last, you need to get your client to introduce you to the referral. If you just get a referral name and phone number from a client, that’s pretty worthless. When you call the referral without an introduction don’t expect much because:

They don’t know who you are.

They don’t know what you do.

They don’t know why you are calling.

They don’t know how you got their name.

They don’t know why somebody gave you their name and they are not expecting your call. Therefore, you need your client to call the referral, send a note or physically introduce you. Getting them to send a note is easiest because you can have your client sign a standard form letter saying how great you are. With your client’s permission, you then run it back through your printer adding your client’s return address. The note arrives at the referral’s home and appears to have been sent from your client’s home.

Of course, not every client will provide referrals. However for those clients that provide none, you will have other clients that provide 25. The key is to treat this as a system rather than an ad hoc process of asking whenever you remember.

This process is neither a lot of work nor very time consuming. Best of all, you can build these three simple steps into your normal client monitoring procedures. Three simple steps to generate new clients every month.

Make a Golden Christmas Tree

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Several Years ago while I was shopping for Christmas I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the holiday arrangements at the department store I was in.

I was dazzled by the sight, golden branches wrapped in twinkling white lights. The idea was so simple but yet absolutely beautiful.

Within a moment I decided I would re-create it at home. Once home, I took a walk in the woods to gather the necessary branches and the other materials were easily found at my local craft store.

I created three trees that year and placed them on my front porch; two smaller ones on the left side of the door and a larger one to the right. The effect was just what I had hoped for~ a golden glow that welcomed family and friends into my home for the holidays.

Materials Needed for One Tree:

Large tree branch that “looks” like a small tree
Gold spray paint
Gold fabric
Gold cording
Soil
String of white lights
Plastic garbage bag

1. Find a large tree branch that when held on its end, looks like a small tree.

2. Fill a garbage bag with soil, enough to support the weight of the branch when inserted. Insert the branch and pack the soil around it so it stands upright. Tie the bag securely around bottom of branch. Shape the bag of soil so it looks like the root ball when you buy a new tree from the nursery.
*Note-it will be heavy so work fairly close to where you want your final project so you don’t have too far to move it.

3. Spray entire tree with gold spray paint and let it dry.

4. Wrap “root ball” in gold fabric and secure with gold cording.

5. String with white lights.

Since creating my golden Christmas trees I have seen a similar project where the tree was spray painted white and the “root ball” was covered with colorful holiday fabric. Either way, it makes a festive holiday display. Enjoy the holidays!

The Third Ear

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Spent about half my day in the production studio working on
Music Business Radio stuff. It was me, the producer, a station
executive, and an intern…all crammed into a small room.

Was working on a few edits today. I talk and the producer works
the board…

So why have two extra people in where space (and ventilation)
are at a premium?

Kathode Ray Music is ten years old this month and we didn’t get
here because I think I know everything. Yes, I’m the driving
force behind this operation, but there are many people that I
work with, employ, and are otherwise associated with which are
much better at certain things than I am. And when that happens,
I get them to do the job.

I can get on the air and talk ok, but I don’t know everything
about radio. That was one reason there were other people in the
room…

But there is something other than talent that these guys bring
to the table…

Opinion.

Sometimes we’re too close to our own work to see it for what it
is. Distance helps thanks temendously and lets you see the big
picture, so it’s always good to have people who can see things
(or hear them) at a distance.

Think of Earth. It seems flat doesn’t it? Personally, I’ve never
experienced anything that would lead me to believe otherwise.

But a little distance, such as a photo from space, shows that
Earth is anything but flat.

So if you’re make a record, get somebody who is not directly
involved and will give you an honest opinion to come in and
check things out. Do the same thing with your live show and
anything else you do…business or personal.

It’s a good idea to take opinions with a grain of salt, but if
you ask a lot of people and they all tell you the same thing,
realize that they just might be onto something.

Credit Card Debt and College Students

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Credit card companies make use of massive marketing campaigns of which you, as a college student, are constantly a target of. Students are inundated with credit card offers through the mail, internet, and even on campus that often lure them with free t-shirts, coffee mugs, and other gifts. These offers may also include a low introductory teaser interest rate. It is no surprise then that credit card use among college students is at an all time high and still rising. According to a study by Nellie Mae, in 2001 83% of college undergraduates owned a credit card, compared to just 67% in 1998. What is even more telling is that 96% of all college seniors own a credit card. The average number of cards owned by college students is 4.25, with seniors having a whopping average of 6.13 cards.

Simply owning a credit card, of course, is not a bad thing. Credit cards are often convenient and sometimes even necessary. However, many college students are simply not educated on the drawbacks and true expenses of using credit and, as a result, often misuse their credit. This can be seen in the significant credit card balances carried by many students. According to Nellie Mae, the average credit card debt among college students is $2,327, with a 27% of all students having a balance greater than $3,000. As you might expect, seniors have even larger amounts of debt. The average credit card balance among seniors is $3,262, with 40% carrying a balance greater than $3,000. In fact, nearly 1 in 10 seniors has a balance exceeding $7,000. The number of cards owned and the average debt carried increase steadily as a student progresses through college.

Excessive credit card debt is a serious problem. Particularly when combined with large student loan debts, credit card debt can cause a serious financial burden for recent graduates.

Protect Your Laptop from Theft

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Laptop computers are often stolen. They are small, easily sold, and valuable. When a laptop is stolen it is a major inconvenience at best, and if company confidential data gets into the wrong hands the results can be truly catastrophic.

Many professionals use a laptop, often transporting it between home and the office. Most travel at least occasionally with a laptop. Laptops are particularly vulnerable when traveling but are also often stolen from offices and residences as well.

These simple steps should be taken to help protect laptops from physical theft.

Use a locking cable and perhaps an alarm for your laptop, available at any computer store. I don’t always lock my laptop, for example at home, but often lock it in hotel rooms and even in my private office when leaving for extended periods of time.

Carry your laptop in something other than a laptop bag, for example a briefcase or backpack. Don’t make it obvious your bag contains a laptop!

Try not to leave laptops in a car. This isn’t always practical, but minimize it as much as practical. Never leave a laptop, laptop case, or briefcase in plain sight in a car.

Watch your laptop carefully in airports and train stations! Certainly do not put it in checked luggage. Do not ignore or leave it alone for even a few seconds. When going through security, place it on the x-ray machine last, immediately before walking through.

Many laptops are stolen from businesses. If you don’t know if it’s safe to leave your laptop unattended then ask someone. A colleague once had his laptop stolen from a “secure building” at a police facility during lunch!

Don’t leave your laptop or any laptop accessories visible in your hotel. In a drawer covered by clothes is a good hiding place.

If you take a bus or shuttle, hold on to your laptop. Don’t put it “in back” with the other luggage.

It only takes a few seconds for a thief to grab a laptop. These simple steps will help protect your laptop, your data, and even your company from potential disaster!

Prevention of Suicide is Everybody’s Business

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Prevention of Suicide is Everybody’s Business

We are losing approximate one million human lives a year worldwide due to suicidal deaths. It is not only the case of death and births subject, which keeps statistics of human counts. Today is September10, an international suicide prevention day . International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) a world health organization’s help group is seriously working on this subject. Now days we are passing through commercialization/Industrialization/capitalist regime, western countries has experienced it much earlier then us. They are facing bio products of this so called revolution as suicidal syndrome in these societies. Developed nations has high suicidal death rate than those developing nations which are passing through commercialization/Industrialization but rate are on rising side for developing nations if not minded will lead towards infinity.

As our Indian society is going through these conditions most affected are those urban areas where commercialization/Industrialization has taken place. Cut throat competitions in every sphere of life lead to mental pressure on these citizens. When our mind could not able to cope up with these men made pressures resulted into a suicide. It is not merely a criminal physical action but result of mental malfunction, which comes into health domain. It should be treated as well established man made disease like HIV/AIDS. Today its occurrence is approximate one million worldwide but it is still more lives lost than

• In all wars and homicides worldwide every year.

• Three times the catastrophic loss of human lives in the tragic Tsunami disaster.

. One suicide represents

• A lost life, lost talents, lost creativity, lost contribution made to society.

• A lost son or daughter, a lost father or mother, a lost friend or colleague.

• A wound that does not easily heal in those who left behind.

The health administrators in developing nations are not giving attention on this especially in country like India and china are in transformation era of commercialization /Industrialization/capitalist regime in check list. As in case of HIV/AIDS origin was in western part of globe (developed nations). It remained confined till it was in this part of world. When it reached in Asia the population basket of world it becomes manifold in its number in few years. Similar to this suicidal syndrome which is resultant of commercialization/Industrialization/capitalist regime, western countries has experienced it much earlier then us. It is now time to keep check on this syndrome otherwise HIV/AIDS type threat to human races is in waiting in coming year in our part of world.

Last not least is national level initiatives to fight against suicidal syndrome at medical and social fronts should be included in national health programme.

Why prevention of suicide is everybody business?

Answer to this is of English poet John Donne

“ No man is an island, entire of itself…..any man’s death diminish me, because I am involve in mankind; and therefore never send to whom the bell toll; it toll for thee”.

PPC Search Engine Advertising

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

PPC search engine advertising A.K.A. pay per click search engine
advertising can allow you to start receiving traffic right away.
PPC search engine advertising can provide you with the traffic
you need run and own a successful online business. It’s the most
cost effective way to promote your business online today. How do
you get started you ask??

There are many way to get started with a PPC search engine and
be advertising in minutes, first find the right company to suit
your needs as an advertiser. Common questions to ask: How much
is minimum bid on keywords or Phrase? Is there a limit to how
many keyword I can bid on? Last but not least is there any type
of bonus for me becoming a member? Almost all PPC search engines
will have all of this info on their website.

After you have picked a solid company and would like to start
advertising you must decide on your keywords and phrases. The
second task is very important; you can choose any keyword you
would like with targeted traffic in mind. Only bid on a couple
non targeted keywords. It’s a waste of money If all your
incoming cliental is not interested in you product. Take in to
prospective of spelling mistakes and how they can help you gain
cheap traffic off PPC search engine advertising, ex. You sell
t-shirts and say a 100 people a month searches the keyword
t-shit. Just because they can’t spell does not mean they can’t
by a t-shirt.

Now all you have to do besides sit down and relax you must set
your daily spending limit. I normally start it at $10 a day as a
test run that equates to 1000 visitors to my website if I only
bid $0.01 per keyword or phrase. To find out how much you can
afford to pay on keyword is by running simple tests. You want to
find out how many people it takes to sell one item? Say the 1000
people have already come to your website & 10 people bought you
product for $10 each. So it took 100 people to make one sale you
then traded $10 for $90 this would be an indication that you can
set you daily up higher.

There is many way to advertise online and ppc search engine
advertising has been one of the most powerful tools for my
websites. It’s fast and easy traffic and helps when you combined
other methods of advertising.

Dog Agility Training

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Without agility, the most muscular person in the world couldn’t win a fight against a fifth-grader. But did you know that for a dog agility is possibly even more important?

With so many of a dog’s happiest moments spent running, jumping, catching, and stretching, dog agility training can really help dogs age gracefully and happily.

What is dog agility training?

You’ve probably seen dog agility training on television. The dogs run a course of tire hoops, tunnels, seesaw, dog walk plank, jumps, hurdles, weaving poles, and a 3-meter A-frame. Heeling, sitting, down stays, send-aways as well as walking off leash are also included.

Who can participate?

Anyone with a dog can do agility training. There is not age limit for people or dogs. In fact, children and puppies are encouraged to take part. All breeds and sizes of dogs without a physical disability can benefit from agility training. Be sure to check with your vet before you begin agility training if you have any doubts about your canine’s fitness.

What equipment is needed?

You as the handler will need comfortable shoes and clothes that you can run in, because this is not exercise for the dog alone.

Your dog needs a leather or webbed buckle collar and a leather, nylon or rope lead of fairly long length. Do not use a chain lead; it could get caught in the jumps.

Agility Training Courses for Dogs

There are two sides of agility training for dogs. They are the obstacles and the control training. There are also tips for training your dog.

1. Obstacles. Although it seems high to many handlers, the A-frame is the best obstacle to begin training. The dog walk plank, low jump and the tunnel (dogs love this obstacle) are also excellent for training the novice dog.

2. Control training is important to keep your dog disciplined both on the agility course and off. Everybody knows that a dog must heel and sit. You must also teach your dog to know and obey different commands: to go left and right, lay down, and wait. After those are mastered, the dog must learn normal recall (returning anytime you call) and recall over obstacles. Also important is the “send away” command, making the dog go ahead you.

Tips for Dog Agility Training

• Begin training by getting your dog’s attention.

• Talk to him and offer a small treat. Coupled with the love he has for you, he’ll be all ears.

• Be sure you have the correct lead (generally 6 feet) and a comfortable collar (measure the dog’s neck and add 2 inches) for your dog.

• Give praise often.

• “Tune in” to your dog to be sure she and you are ready to train.

Here’s a final tip: Make sure that you and your dog enjoy yourselves. After all, jumping through hoops is supposed to be fun–at least if you’re a dog.

Communication-Does It Really Need Two People?

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

I start from telling you about communication. The word ‘communication’ has been derived from Latin word ‘communis’ that means ‘common’. Acc. to Wiber Schramn “When we communicate, we are trying to establish a ‘commonness’ with someone. The essence of communication is getting the receiver and the sender ‘turned’ together for a particular message. Communication takes place when one person transfers information and understanding to another person.

So, it is clear that communication involves at least two persons.

BUT, ”Does communication necessarily involves at least two persons?”

If we talk of commonly written process of communication in various books, it is summed up in following steps:

1. SENDER

2. IDEAS

3. ENCODING

4. SELECTING CHANNEL OF COMMUNICATION

5. RECEIVER

6. DECODING

7. ACTION

8. FEEDBACK

This also shows that communication involves at least two persons.

BUT, “Does communication necessarily involves at least two persons?”

If someone asks from me I would reply “NO”. This can be proved very easily. To arrive at the answer “NO” you have to take an example. I request everyone reading this article to think of a morning when you are not in a hurry and you are getting ready for your office or what ever. Then to get dressed you go to the cupboard and open it and start searching for trouser with matching shirt, a suit or any similar dresses. Normally, we first two or three dresses and then decide which one to wear. And imagine you are alone.

So here lies the answer.

If we go by process of communication it is as follows: you are sender, you have a message that is “what to wear?”, you encode via uttering slowly or thinking, you choose a channel which is abstract to communicate (i.e. mind), then your inner mind is the receiver it decodes the message and at last action is taken with feed back i.e. you decide to wear a dress. So communication is complete. And it doesn’t need two persons in this process.

So communication is two way process but it may result from one person also.

THIS IS WHAT I THINK?

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

DO YOU AGREE WITH ME?
