The Worst Journey in the World, Apsley Cherry Garrard - Book Review

Filed under: Books + Authors — admin @ 7:31 pm

This is the book acclaimed by those who do the acclaiming as
the bar-none most compelling tale of people having a bad time,
ever told. Paul Theroux describes it as the best adventure book
he’s ever read. Couple that with the perennial appearances on
the ‘best this’ and ‘best that’ lists and it becomes clear that
it deserves considerable consideration by those wishing to be
well-read.

There is no doubt Garrard had a horrible time of it. Nor can it
be argued that this narrative is anything but compelling; or
that the quality of the prose is less than stellar.
None-the-less, the accolades given this book lead one to ask,
what is it that makes a book the best adventure book ever
written? And is this it?

The Worst Journey in the World was written a decade after the
fated 1911 Scott expedition to the South Pole. It is a
compendium of Garrard’s reminiscences and diary entries, as well
as the diary entries of Scott, Lashy and others. For the most
part it’s a clear-heading accounting of the expedition that is
both realistic of the hardships encountered and of the team’s
strengths and shortcomings. Granted, there is certain amount of
romance in the telling, but for the most part it avoids the late
century gosh-gee-whiz-let’s-add-an-adjective school of story
telling which ruins so many contemporary tales.

That said, how good is the book? If the first criteria is the
note-worthiness of the adventure itself, rest assured that
Garrard’s account qualifies. That Scott was runner-up in the
race to the pole is reason enough to record the event. The fact
that he did so in such miserable, and by all accounts unusually
harsh conditions makes it even more so. Cherry-Garrard’s winter
expedition to collect eggs of from the previously unstudied
Emperor penguins was downright awful, and a pre curser to the
year ahead …

” … a trip so appalling, so horrendous, so absolute in its
misery and its danger that you cannot think a man could endure
it for a day, much less for five weeks”

In an era where falling into a crevice just once is seen as a
cheating death, Cherry and crew impress with their daily,
sometimes hourly plunges through rotted snow bridges. As do
their accounts of floundering snow blind through mazes of
impassable pressure ridges. Temperature as low as -60 and -70
degrees were common. Every morning the team would prop open the
mouths of their sleeping bags so that they would be able to
climb back into the frozen bags the subsequent evening.
Horrendous hardly seems to be the appropriate epitaph. The fact
they survived is beyond comprehending.

As odd as it to say, Scott’s return journey from the pole
replete with spectacularly frigid conditions, depleted supplies
and eventual stormbound death seems almost manageable. Not that
his journey was easier than Garrard’s, but rather quieter and
more in the norm of what you and I might expect to be overcome
by …

… blizzard bad as ever — Wilson and Bowers unable to
start — tomorrow last chance — no fuel and only one or two
days of food left — must be near the end. Have decided it shall
be natural — we shall march for the depot with or without our
effects and die in our tracks.

Thursday, March 29th. Since the 21st we have had a continuous
gale from W.S.W and S.W. We had fuel to make two cups of tea
apiece and bare food for two days on the 20th. Every day we have
been ready to start for our depot 11 miles away, but outside the
door of the tent it remains a scene of whirling drift. I do not
think we can hope for any better things now. We shall stick it
out to the end but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end
cannot be far.

It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more.

R.Scott

There is something familiar about the end; proof perhaps that we
are mortal, that we are decent, and that there is an intrinsic
worth in attempting the unlikely.

There is never any queston that the adventure itself (if one can
call it an adventure … Garrard certainly wouldn’t object) is
eponymous; it records one of the great endeavours of the modern
era. As an adventure in-and-of-itself, however, it’s hardly
possible to rate it as greater or lessor on some arbitrary scale
against F.A. Worsley’s, Endurance. It’s quite the tale; I’d be a
fool to say otherwise. I’d also be a fool to claim it was the
greatest of all and so, remain agnostic.

Which leads then to criterium number two; apart from the
subject, is the narrative compelling? Well … it isn’t a page
turner like Touching the Void is a page turner, but it was
written in a different era. And while it doesn’t plod, it is
true to its intent and records the expedition as fully as
Garrard thought possible. What this means is that everything
from zoological observations to crew manifests are recorded,
along with the joys and tribulations of the event.

Nor is Garrard interested in leaving the reader hanging at the
end of each chapter; he was NOT negotiating a film deal in the
background and the story proceeds accordingly … everyone knows
the ending and we get there eventually. What will surprise is
how quickly it comes and how quickly the 550 pages disappear. Is
it the most compelling narrative ever … ? Not really, but it
is good. And if one were to take readers’ reactions from
consumer sites into account the over-arching opinion has it that
it’s very good.

An adventure, no matter how worthy, coupled with a narrative
superbly paced does not make a good book if the telling of the
tale gets in the way. Common to much recently written adventure
lit is a quality of over-enthusiasm … a seeming need by the
author to convince a reader of the awesomeness of the events;
adjectives multiply, perspective seems lost and we’re left
wondering why the author needs to try so hard.

What will strike a reader is how unassuming Cherry-Garrard is,
and how he under-states what the expedition was faced with. His
is the precise opposite of a typical over-written, over hyped
post millenial account. Stiff-upper-lipped-Britness explains it
partially. Eric Newby does the same thing in A Short Walk in the
Hindu Kush where hardships are downplayed and collegiality
reigns. It may be last-gasp-of-the-empire mentality, but the
Brits of that class had class. And it shows. It’s this quality
exactly that has endeared the account to readers for the last
century … and I suspect it’s what readers and editors are
responding to when they call it the best adventure book ever.

It is good. It is very good. The best, however … ? Geez, I’m
going to weasel on this … for it to be the best, it has to
feel the best and somehow … somehow … somehow …suffice it
to say that Cherry Garrard’s, The Worst Journey in the World is
more compelling than most, better paced than most, and better
written than almost all else. It will impress.

How To Email Your College Professor

Filed under: Education + Training — admin @ 6:35 pm

So its 1:30 am and there you are at the computer trying to refresh the email inbox page. The big test is tomorrow and your Professor still hasn’t replied back, but why? Contrary to popular belief, that your Professor wants you to fail, the problem could stem from the fact that your email never reached him/her. Hence, the purpose of this guide is to show students how to write an effective email to their Professors.

The From Field

Always use your University or College email address when sending an email to your professor. This not only assures the professor that you are indeed a student but also avoids your email from getting put in the spam box. Many Universities and Colleges now employ a system of only allowing emails to be received from certain domains anything else (hotmail, yahoo…etc) is either automatically put in the spam box or is forwarded to the Professor as a potential spam.
Example:

Astudent@university.edu

The To Field

This is the single most important field, if you mess up in here there you can kiss your email good bye. Avoid putting the Professor’s name with the email (A Prof ), since not all emailing system can handle this format. It is always best to send your email to the Professor’s University or College account, since that is the email account that your Professor checks, or should check, the most. And again before sending the email double check to verify that email address was typed correctly.
Example:

Aprof@universtiy.edu

The Subject Field

The subject field should be of the following format:

CollegeName-CourceCode-Title-Subject

CollegeName: Is the name of your post secondary institution (America Learning College, Boston University…etc). Yes I do realize that this may seem a bit redundant but it is important. Most Professors (Usually new Professors) teach at one or more Universities and Colleges at any given term, and the email from those institutions gets forwarded to one main address, usually their ISP email address. So to keep things organized its best to write the name of the College or University in the Subject Field.

CourseCode- Is the code name of the course (MTH140, CPS124, GEF345…etc). It’s best to keep the letters Capital and no spaces between the number and letter.

Title: Over here you type in the title of your subject. (Test 1, Midterm, Exam, Assignment 5…etc)

Subject: Over here you type in what concern or problem you might have (Due Date Issue, Missed Test Issue, HW Problem #45…etc). Remember to keep it brief, no more then 5 words.

Example:

Boston College-MTH140-Assignment 4-HW Problem #45

The Text Body Field

Try to keep things simple, clean and to the point. By that I mean no 2 page emails or fancy fonts and color, remember your first priority is to convey your message not to show off your email editing skills. Start off with writing the Professors name (Prof C.Mcgill, Prof U.Stan…etc). Move on to the subject of your email, as a reminder restate the Course Code and Title Field (During the Monday’s MTH140 class you stated for Assignment 4). The next line should state the problem or concern. Remember to provide details and avoid repetitions. Its best to end the email with a salutatory statement (Thank You, Yours Truly..etc) and use your name, student number and College or University name as signature.

Example:

Prof C. Mcgill,
During the Monday’s MTH140 class you stated for Assignment 4 question #41 to use the second derivative theorem. However, I am having trouble as to how to find the delta X? In particular, during the situation when time is 3 seconds and delta Y is 0. Do we set delta Y to Ymin and solve from there?

Thank You

Things to Keep In Mind

- Give a minimum of one weekday for Professors to reply back, before sending another email.
- Avoid sending multiple duplicate emails at any one given time.
- Try to send emails during weekdays and if possible during the Professors office hours.
- Try to be respectful and Professional (i.e. no offensive language, spell check…etc).
- Avoid taking out frustration by spamming the Professors email box.

RSS as a Change Agent

Filed under: The Networkers Way — admin @ 6:30 pm

To better understand how RSS is changing the way companies and individuals deliver and consume content on the macro scale, let us first remember how content is traditionally delivered and consumed.

People subscribe to e-mail newsletters or e-mail update services to get content delivered directly to their inboxes. It’s (or better yet, was) convenient, easy and simple.

But, in order to get content delivered to their inboxes, they must first reveal their e-mail addresses, which are basically ID numbers that allow anyone who knows them to send whatever they like to these ID numbers.

In a perfect world people would only receive the content that they requested and only from the people that they wanted to hear from –> the people that can provide them with relevant information, specific to their interests and current situation.

But this is not a perfect world.

Since the “ID number” allows anyone to contact anyone, people have very little control over who actually does contact them and what information they send them.

In a way, it’s a “perfect democracy” that just doesn’t work. Because, in reality, we don’t want to hear from everyone that thinks they have something to say to us. In reality, we only want to hear from a very limited circle of people and receive very limited types of content categories.

But, for the sake of the argument, let’s presume that we are actually getting information only from the people that we want to hear from. Unfortunately these people still have the power to send us whatever information they like, not just the information we want to receive from them. Basically, they have the power to push any kind of content to our e-mail inboxes.

We can either unsubscribe, if they give us this opportunity, from their e-mail service or continue to receive their content as it is. One of the problems with this is that unsubscribing can be a rather tedious process, definitely not a two-click affair, and some people even doubt that the unsubscribe feature will actually work.

This is our reality.

We are, more or less, forced to receive content we mostly don’t want to receive, and for the content that we do want to receive, we also have to put up with much information we don’t want to get.

This is the “democratic” nature of e-mail and many marketers and publishers have been abusing it for a long time. It’s not the medium’s fault of course; it’s just that people are who we are.

And now enter RSS in to the picture, a “new” channel that users need to proactively add to their content consumption mix, including proactively adding content publishers they want to hear from, thus eliminating the “democracy” of e-mail, conversely, limiting our “content diet” only to the publishers we actually want to hear from.

But there’s more.

One of this channel’s characteristics is that it’s extremely easy to remove content publishers you don’t want to hear from.

Now, all of us have very limited time for online content consumption. It’s always been this way, but with e-mail content consumption we usually don’t even bother ourselves with unsubscribing from the content we don’t want to receive, since we already receive hundreds of SPAM e-mails per day anyway, so why bother with unsubscribing from a few e-mail lists and the few additional e-mails we receive per week. Most people don’t even know anymore what they subscribe to since they have no unified view of all of their e-mail subscriptions.

However, this new channel, RSS, is quite different. Here you have an exact view of what you subscribe to. You see exactly which content publishers are on your list and you can remove any of them immediately, without even a second thought. It’s quick, easy and comfortable.

Compare this with the relative difficulty of unsubscribing from e-mail lists, and even with the e-mail mindset where you just don’t care to be bothered anymore with unsubscribing, since you don’t have a view of what you subscribe to anyway.

This new channel takes the democracy right out of content delivery for publishers and brings it back for end-users.

If RSS content publishers want to keep and grow their readership, they cannot afford to do the things they could have easily been doing with e-mail.

Instantly, all the content needs to be highly relevant. You can no longer afford to send out blatant advertising messages or too much content that is of little interest to your target audience. If you want to survive you need to tailor all of your content specifically to the needs of your target audience.

RSS content delivery must in nature be more relevant than content delivered by e-mail.

RSS content publishers know this and most are providing exactly this, very relevant content, usually more relevant than what most e-mail publishers are doing, since they are taking in to consideration the specific characteristics of the channel.

And there are more publishers like this every day. And eventually, even those that use both e-mail and RSS to deliver content, change the way they are delivering content using e-mail. Their entire content production becomes more relevant to the user’s needs.

It’s quite easy to imagine the larger-scale implications of this.

Since more and more publishers are starting to offer more relevant content, that also raises the bar for other content publishers, even those not using RSS.

Our expectations are increasing every day. We are no longer content with mediocre content, we actually expect and even demand more relevancy.

And so the circle is completed.

Early RSS publishers have started raising our expectations of what to expect from internet content and have thus affected our internet content consumption habits. Users, in affect, are starting to demand more, which in turn forces other publishers to comply with the increased demands.

This process has just begun and still has a long way to go, but it has begun and will not stop.

Insights into China and India’s Water and Renewable Energy Market

Depletion of Natural Resources and Energy Demands Show
Increasing Need for Renewables and Water Filtration

By Fei Wang www.China-AsiaStocks.com and
www.IndiaStockMarket.com January 2006

China and India’s aggressive economic growth over the past two
decades have provided significant increases in the standard of
living for hundreds of millions of residents. This increase has
also produced environmental disasters: deforestation, flooding,
water pollution and land degradation continue to worsen. There
has been a dramatic increase in the demand for natural resources
of all kinds, especially water and energy in both these
countries, which creates opportunities for foreign investors
involved in the water and renewable energy sectors. However, due
to the differences in the composition of natural resources,
population structure, and political environment, opportunities
and challenges vary between countries. How do these differences
affect doing business in those two countries? Which country has
bigger potential for growth in these two industries?

Water Treatment

- Background

High density population in both countries, along with a move
toward urbanization and industrialization, has placed
significant pressure on their infrastructure and its natural
resources. According to the report from World Water Forum, in
China 60 million people are having difficulty getting access to
water, almost three times that number drink contaminated water
daily. 400 out of a total of 668 Chinese cities are having water
shortage problems, only 30% of which have had some wastewater
treatment. India’s water quality is the second worst in the
world. According to India Asia News Portal, only 40% to 50% of
the Indian population has enough supply of water. The publics
have to get their own water from wells (see picture 1).

- Water Industry Opportunities

Many experts believe, after the oil and natural gas market
exploded that water will be the next oil for the following 20 to
30 years representing a considerable opportunity for growth in
this arena. China is planning to build 200 to 400 more power
plants, but there is not enough water to fuel these plants.
Opportunities clearly exist. According to a recent economic
survey, nations in the Middle East will need to invest an
estimated $73 billion in water desalination plants during the
next three decades in order to meet rising demand for domestic,
industrial and agricultural water.

This trend has already appeared in the US stock market. Many
water sector stocks are showing a very strong growth trend. The
American Stock Exchange(R) (Amex(R)) announced on Aug 11th that
it has begun publishing the Palisades Water Index (Ticker
Symbol: ZWI); a new index comprised of publicly traded companies
engaged in the global water industry. The index was created by a
venture between Hydrogen Ventures, LLC and WaterTech Capital.

When it comes to the China and India water market, Steve
Hoffmann, President of WaterTech Capital said: “Between India
and China, China has, at least at this point in time, better
natural water resources than India because water systems in
China are fairly extensive. India on the other hand, does have a
variety of surface water to draw upon, but a lot of their
surface water availability comes in the form of monsoons, and
many of them are lost during flooding. Therefore, relatively
speaking, between China and India, at this point, India is more
water stressed than China. Current situation with China is they
are spending an enormous amount of money on water
infrastructure, creating visibility from Olympics and other
publicity. I think also their economic situation puts them in a
better position right now than India. Fairly, the water industry
around the world thinks China is an enormous market. ”

Renewable Energy in High Demand

- Background

Continued inflow of foreign investment and the improved standard
of living of both Chinese and Indian people have inadvertently
pushed up demand for energy. During the first half this year,
China produced 1.128 trillion KW electricity, while consumption
equaled 1.148 trillion KW, a shortage of 0.02 trillion KW.
According to a recent report by Jean Ku and Debra Lew from the
National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Shi Pengfei of the
China Hydropower Planning General Institute and William Wallace
of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), more than
two-thirds of its provinces suffered blackouts last year due to
a shortage of generators, problematic coal and transport links,
and water shortages.

- Opportunities in Renewable Energy

Renewable energies, especially wind and solar, represent viable
solutions to the power shortage problems. “Strengthening the
development and use of renewable energies is a must for us to
address the increasingly serious energy and environmental
issues,” China president Hu Jingtao said in a statement, “China
attaches great importance to…renewable energy and takes it as
one of the most important instruments for promoting social and
economic development,” (quoted from The Wall Street Journal
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB113140558502290495.html).

- Solar Energy

China’s production and application of solar energy heaters is
leading the world. A total of 52 mln square meters have been
applied in 2003, representing 40 percent of the total amount of
the world. Debra Lew, Senior Project Leader at NREL explains,
“China is the largest solar water heating market in the world.
The technology is already used extensively, but there is great
potential for them to expand use in the residential, commercial
and industrial sectors. Solar photovoltaics (PV) used to produce
electricity is also already widely used in China, especially in
rural areas to provide electricity. The government recently
installed nearly 20 MW to electrify all townships that were
previously unelectrified. Megawatt-scale projects in urban areas
are also being installed..” Lew also stated “Solar is also doing
well in India. India also has a large rural population that is
remote and difficult to electrify with conventional grid
extension. Solar has been used in India as well to provide
electricity to those remote areas.”

China is Shell’s (NYSE: RDS-A) largest solar market in the Asia
Pacific region today. In the last 10 years they have installed
more than 7 MWp of solar power in more than 50 projects.
According to Shell Solar Media Relations Officer Alexandra
Wright, “Shell Solar looks at a variety of matters when deciding
to pursue renewable projects (in China and India market),
including of course traditional business drivers such as
critical mass and regulatory regimes. Solar opportunities are
encouraging in both countries as we are looking to bring energy
to individual households, and investigating the potential for a
system that would power entire villages. Shell is now in the
second phase of the Xinjiang project which will power around 75
villages in China.”

XsunX, Inc., (OTCBB: XSNX), a company focused on Building
Integrated Photovoltaics, anticipates a significant need for
alternative energy generation technology in developing countries
such as China and India. Tom Djokovich, CEO of XsunX, Inc
stated, “For XsunX, China with about 20% of the worlds
population and India with about 17% represent one of the more
compelling opportunities for sustained growth in the utilization
of solar energy production. Additionally these two developing
countries are experiencing a significant increase in the demand
for electrical power. At the same time the developed and
developing parts of the world are competing for a finite amount
of fossil fuels to power growing demands. This has not gone
unnoticed by the governments of China and India. India’s
government is preparing to embark on the development of major
national programs to promote the development of solar energy
systems in centralized and decentralized applications. While
China has enacted a renewable energy law designed to promote,
among other things, the wide scale use of PV technologies in the
design of buildings.”

“In these developing nations the practicality and cost benefits
of deploying solar technologies in lieu of building mass
centralized fossil fuel powered generation plants, transmission,
and distribution systems can and should be viewed as an
investment in long term national energy security. At XsunX we
are working to complete the development of semi-transparent PV
thin films for use in glass building facades. The use of our
Power Glass® films as a building integrated PV technology could
find opportunities in China and India as these developing
nations work to leverage a myriad of technologies in building
energy security and independence,” concluded Mr. Djokovich.

Suntech power Co. Ltd, a Chinese based solar power company has
also Identified opportunities for renewable energy in Asia. The
Company went public on December 14th this year through an IPO
becoming a shining light of solar energy stocks. Suntech Power
rose 34 percent to $21.10 in their U.S. market debut on
Wednesday, a day after pricing at the top of a recently raised
forecast (forecast range raised from $11-$13 to $13 - $15 on
Tuesday).

- Wind Energy

“Wind power has huge potential to address some of those (power
shortage) problems”, said Lew, “India currently is out-
competing China in terms of wind power because of their
aggressive policies. With an estimated potential wind power
capacity of 250 gigawatts onshore and 750 gigawatts offshore,
China has world-class wind resource. But their installed
capacity of wind power was only 764 MW (see table 1) at the end
of 2004, far less than India, which actually has a much more
moderate wind resource. India leads the Asia market with an
installed wind capacity of 4200 MW. ”

The critical factor that has led to this difference, according
to Lew, is the government policy. “Driving the development has
been the policy not the renewable energy resource. India’s wind
resources are not as strong, but the government has been
developing its wind market much more aggressively, with
aggressive policies and financial incentives. However, China is
catching up; especially with the new renewable energy law that
comes effective January 2006. They (Chinese) have set very
aggressive targets for renewable energy to meet as a certain
percentage of power supply (10% of its power, with 20 GW of
wind, and 1 GW of solar by 2020. And in the recent Beijing
International Renewable Energy Conference the government
announced a new target of 15% RE by 2020 with no announcement of
specific breakdown). In the new law, China is going to institute
a 0.25RMB/kWh subsidy for wind energy which should help drive
development,” described.

Table 1 Quoted from: Fuelling China’s Development through Wind
Power

GE Energy is very optimistic about both China and India’s
markets. Beijing Guotou Energy Conservation Company has selected
GE Energy as the turbine supplier for two new wind farms in
Hebei and Xinjiang provinces of China, announced GE at Power-Gen
Asia 2005. “China has a vast wind resource and an increasing
need for electricity,” stated Robert Gleitz, General Manager of
GE Energy’s wind segment in their news release. GE Energy has
also supplied steam turbine generators to all major power
utilities in India, which accounts for 10% of India’s installed
thermal power generation capacity. “India offers very exciting
opportunities for the wind industry. With an untapped wind power
potential estimated at 45,000 megawatts, and strong interest in
adding renewable energy capacity, the country can be a
cornerstone for wind energy development across Asia,” states
Gleitz.

Water and Renewable Energy Market’s Future

Hoffmann believes that China’s water industry potentially has a
brighter future than India’s. He explains:” I definitely think
China has greater opportunities to mitigate their situation for
a number of reasons: as developing countries, both India and
China are very rural, although China I think they have a greater
urbanization rate than India at this point. In China, a lot of
income potentials are in the major cities and more people move
into cities. This is creating a fair amount of necessity on the
part of China at least to really evoke some large centralized
treatment and I think given that the Olympics will be there in
2008, they are certainly more visible and they will be quicker
dealing with their water situation than India may. Also, you can
see a fair amount of capital flow into China. A lot of global
water players (such as GE) are actively courting China to
partner in large centralized water treatment facilities. So I
think they are getting a flow of funds that you can say will
help them develop faster. Most importantly, from table 2, you
can see, based upon the United Nation’s Population growth
statistic, over the period 1990 to 2025, India will surpass
China relative to water stress. This is primarily depends on
current population growth, because India right now has higher
population growth rate than China. The future of both countries
will be primarily dependent upon their future population growth.
If both countries can moderate their population growth, they
will certainly be in a better position from a water stress point
of view. ”

Table 2: Quoted from WaterTech Capital

When it comes to which market will have brighter future in
renewable energy sector, Lew said, ” (In terms of natural
resources), China definitely has better wind resources, and very
excellent solar resources in the north and west, but there isn’t
a lot of demand out there, so it is hard to say how useful it
is.” However, in terms of government policy, “India really got a
jump on the policy side, and this has attracted international
wind companies who manufacture turbines and blades there.
India’s wind market is one of the top in the world now. On the
other hand, China’s new law and new subsidy in 2006 will be a
huge boon to wind to China, “explained Lew.

CHOLESTEROL CONTROL FOR BUSY PEOPLE

Filed under: Lifestyle Center — admin @ 3:12 pm

Your peace of mind is priceless…

Cholesterol Dictatorship… Don’t you have enough this
brainwash? You should… You must be frustrated to hear over and
over what you should or what you shouldn’t eat, like you don’t
know yet… But you do know very well, and if you still have
problems with high Cholesterol… you are not alone.

You are bombard with the advice on nutrition, but one thing is
left out which makes that advice obsolete…

Food is not the answer for most people!

Food is either: synthetic or over processed, over pesticides and
over radiated - in short - building materials are missing…
”Gone with the wind”…

The Secret is out…

Our population is hunted by high Cholesterol including small
children thanks to the same foods, which are so glorified. “Give
me a break!”

How anyone can consider food as reliable nutrition source, where
the meat and the poultry are treated with hormones?

I found it almost ironic that so many experts keep sending
message that you can keep Cholesterol low just on nearly empty
diet. Please… don’t consider isolated synthetic Vitamins and
Minerals a healthy solution. It is not, and never will be.

In reality, not many people can afford to shop in the Health
Food Stores, so they are relaying on the food chain industry.

The trust is wrongly placed…

Over processed food is difficult to digest, and as the result
fat is more difficult to utilized and the consequences are
devastating: Heart Disease, High Cholesterol, Diabetics and
Strokes are just the results what food can do…

So… what is the solution? I like to tell you about wonderful
solution to this problem later but first, regardless how high or
how low is your Cholesterol level one thing is certain…
Prevention is the key…

Yes, yes there are zillions of products on the market and so
what? You are still hoping for something better and you should…

Home Business: A Dream or a Nightmare

Home Business: A Dream or a Nightmare

By Denise Hall (C) 2003

Many of us dream of someday having our own business. Whether it
is a grocery store, craft supply shop or accounting office we
dream of being our own boss.

For many others the ultimate business is to work from the
comfort of our own homes. Why? Because there are many advantages
to working from home.

Home businesses have low overhead costs, therefore more profit.

You don’t need as much money for start-up costs as a typical
business needs.

You can set your own hours and work around your other important
activities.

You don’t have to get dressed up to go to work. Work in your
pajamas and bathrobe if you’d like.

But for some people this dream may seem unattainable. They have
no idea where to begin. They’re not sure what they want to do.
The dream is hard to picture as a reality.

Ask yourself some questions before deciding if a home business
is for you.

1. What are your interests or hobbies?

2. How much do you know about those subjects?

3. Do you feel you can contribute your knowledge and skills to
others in a professional manner?

4. Is there a need for your products or services?

5. Do you know how to market your business?

6. Do you have long-term goals for your business?

7. Are you willing to LEARN how to start and run a business?

If you have answers to those questions, you probably possess the
ability to have your own business. If not, you can consult a
business consultant or small business counselor for advice to
see if a home business is for you.

It might not be easy getting started but where there’s a will,
there’s a way.

Don’t jump in head first. Do your homework. Know the answers to
the questions above before you start. Have a business plan.

If you start your business with no clear direction your dream
might turn into a nightmare.

Be prepared to change your direction a bit if the current market
calls for it. But do follow your original plan as much as
possible.

Unless you have a pre-established client or customer base don’t
quit your “day job” until your home business is well under way
and you can afford to do so.

Working from home is a dream that can become a reality for many
people. But know where you want to go and what you want to do so
it doesn’t end up being a nightmare.

Job Application Form - Giving the Professional Image

Filed under: Guidance — admin @ 10:34 am

So, it is time to start looking for a new job. Are you prepared to fill out your job application form? It used to be that only companies offering minimum wage or retail job positions required that you fill out a job application form, but now many corporations are having even the most professional applicants fill out the form. Do you know what you will need to provide the detailed information?

A job application form may seem like a piece of cake, but in fact you will have a small amount of space to present yourself in a professional manner. You need to know what information to include to keep your job application form irresistible to your potential employer. The first step is to make your handwriting neat and legible. If an employer cannot read your job application form, he or she will toss it in the garbage. If you are able to fill out a job application form online, do it. This way your first impression will be professional.

The other thing to consider when filling out your job application form is to watch your spelling. Whether in person or online, there will be no “spell-check” for your job application form except you reading it over. Be sure you do. If an employer sees spelling or grammar mistakes on your job application form, they may think that you really do not even care enough about getting a job to put in the time and energy to read over your application.

Another thing to check when filling out your job application form is the accuracy of your information. Be sure you know the dates you were employed from the present back at least 10 years. Most job application forms will ask for your last three to four jobs, though government agencies will go all the way back through your very first job. Sometimes it helps to make yourself a handwritten list that you keep in with all of your job hunting material. You can keep adding to your list every time you change jobs so that you always have a reference.

Finally, do not lie on your job application form. If you do not know something and you cannot look it up, then admit it. If you have a criminal history, you need to be honest about it. Lying on your job application form can cost you your job later, and then how do you explain why you got fired to your next potential employer? Honesty is always the best policy when filling out your job application form.

Modeling

Filed under: Self Improvement Tips — admin @ 3:16 am

One of the most effective concepts in personal development is modeling. Modeling simply means that you find someone who’s already getting the results you want in some area, learn what they did to get those results, and then basically just do the same thing. It’s a lot like following a recipe to re-create a meal.

As an example, years ago I met a man who had gone from earning $40K/year to earning $400K/year over a period of two years. I asked him how he did it, and he told me. One of his main ideas was to find out what has made you money in the past, and do more of it; then find out what has lost you money in the past, and do less of it. But as brain-dead simple as this idea sounds, I found that it worked really well when I looked for ways to apply it, and I doubled my income in about six months. For example, I discovered that releasing products made me money, but developing products didn’t generate income at all. So I found a way to release new products faster. Simple idea, but very effective.

But something I’ve found helpful is that the reverse concept works pretty well too: If you find someone who isn’t getting the results you want in a particular area, don’t take their advice. This is an overgeneralization of course, but I find that more often than not, it’s pretty accurate.

Why would anyone buy a diet book with a picture of an overweight doctor on the cover? Isn’t that sort of like signing up for a martial arts class taught by a white belt? I read that the autopsy done on Dr. Atkins (of the popular Atkins diet) revealed that he was obese and that his arteries were clogged with plaque. And Dr. Phil, well, he doesn’t look too fit to me either, but he tries hard to add credibility to his diet by showcasing extremely overweight people who are given tons of leverage to lose weight (virtually anyone can lose weight with the leverage of national TV behind them). Other fitness books like Bill Philips’ Body for Life and Dr. Scott Connelly’s Body Rx are at least written by people who appear to be in good physical condition. One comment in particular that I loved reading in Connelly’s book was a challenge for all the other diet doctors to appear next to him in a bathing suit. Hmmm, why not?

Of course, you can’t determine health just by physical looks — Brian Maxwell, the founder of Power Bar and a former world-class marathoner, died of a heart attack earlier this year at age 51. So maybe you don’t want to follow in his footsteps either.

While it seems logical that just about anyone could potentially provide valuable advice on any subject, the problem is advice that often sounds good just doesn’t prove effective in the real world. This is why modeling can save you a lot of time. The person who is currently getting the results you want has probably already tried and discarded many strategies that don’t work. And they’ve obviously found at least one strategy that does work, at least for them, so their ideas have already passed the reality test.

On the other hand, be careful not to get trapped into the situation of continually seeking advice from people who aren’t getting the results you want. For example, I often see single people who are looking to marry ask other single people for advice on how to attract a future spouse. And these people get lots of well-meaning advice that simply won’t work. If you’re single and want to get married, then the best people to ask about how to do it are happily married people. Duh! And most likely you’ll find their advice very different than that of perpetual singles.

This is a really simple concept, but it’s amazing how few people take the time to apply it. Is there some area in your life right now where you want to start getting better results? Can you find one person who has already gotten those results and spend a few minutes asking that person how s/he did it? Or maybe find a book written by an author who had achieved those results? Then just by taking the same actions (almost blindly and brainlessly), you stand a good chance of getting those results for yourself.

Modeling — it’s not just for models.

Killer Sales Copy Formula

Filed under: Publishing — admin @ 3:14 am

A good formula when writing sales copy be it for your website, an email to potential customers or prospects, placing an ad etc. is by using 3 simple steps.

Step 1 - Create a problem

What is your customers or prospects biggest concern or problem? Define what it is and write about it. Everybody has some kind of problem whether big or small that interests them in your product or service.

Step 2 - Agitate Them

Make the problem larger than life. Tap into their emotions. Pour salt on their wounds. You have to make them feel so angry that they are pacing the room thinking “this has got to stop” or “I have to do something about this.”

Step 3 - Offer a Solution

Now that you got them where you want them, offer them a solution to their problem, which is your product or service, and list the features associated with it as well.

This formula can be applied to almost every product or service imagineable.

Problem - Agitation - Solution

And don’t be afraid of how long your sales copy is either. Write as long as necessary to explain everything.

If a person doesn’t take the time to read long sales copy, it is a good bet they weren’t interested in your product or service anyway.

Because if they were, they would try to find out as much information as they can before making a purchase.

A good book that I recommend you pick up on creating effective sales copy is by Dan S. Kennedy called The Ultimate Sales Letter.

It has the formula I mentioned and many more in it. You can find it at most off/online bookstores.

And remember, you can learn all you want but it only becomes effective when you apply what you learned.

Repeat after me… learn and apply… learn and apply….

Are You Content With Your Crowd-Wow Factor? Six Reasons to Emulate Eminem if You Want Loyal Web Fans

Filed under: The Information Way — admin @ 3:12 am

Let’s blow past all the reasons so many folks despise Eminem.
He’s confused about what race he is, he says mean things and
he’s sending the wrong message to today’s youth. Sure, we know
that Eminem is the quintessential Bad Guy. But let’s take a look
at what makes Eminem sticky, like your web marketing personality
should be.

Last night, Eminem’s concert was being aired on my TV and I
confess I kind of watched some of it while writing articles. I
couldn’t help myself; the guy is THAT magnetic. So without
further ado, I bring to you… Five Reasons to Emulate Eminem if
You Want to Become a Web Guru.

1. Eminem Means What He Says… do YOU?

Right or wrong, Slim Shady is one emphatic dude and that is
exactly the way you MUST speak to your audience if you plan to
build up to Guru Status. People don’t follow weaklings. People
follow leaders who are 100% sure of what they say. The best way
to show your self-assurance is to PREACH, PREACH and PREACH some
more. Never doubt yourself, at least not out in public. I mean
never!

2. Eminem Loves to Stir Up Controversy… do YOU?

Who’s blog are you going to read; the wishy washy mouth
breather’s who parrots and whines all day? Or the guy who makes
people sit up straight and take notice because he states his
opinion and is ready to whip out his debate guns if the need
arises? Be a little bit controversial in your web content if you
can. Of course, unlike Eminem, a marketing professional should
never be out to hurt or offend people with hateful talk. But you
must have your own thoughts, and all the better if a few of them
challenge the status quo. Be a ground breaker!

3. Eminem Is Lyrical… are YOU?

Don’t let those goofy lounge suits and the profanity fool you.
Rappers are geniuses in their own right– lyrical geniuses, that
is. When was the last time you freestyle-rhymed a barrage of
well-executed insults at a buddy and blew away the crowd of
onlookers? Um, probably never? LYRICAL is exactly what you NEED
to be when writing web copy for your business website. Your copy
should have rhythm, steady beat, perfect pacing, alliteration,
clever wordplay and original phrases. Heck, you can even bust a
rhyme from time to time like the rappers, poets and songwriters
do. If you can’t create it yourself, hire a professional to
create engaging copy that’s so tight it’s on springs… and just
like those pop lyrics, it positively SINGS.

4. Eminem Can Put the Crowd Under a Spell… can YOU?

I nearly became hypnotized myself while watching Eminem put his
audience in a trance this weekend. Charm and disarm your web
visitors and fans like Em does. Be intense! Get a harness on
your power to whip up the energy in a room (or web forum) and
move people to action. Get control of your copy. Whip your
website into tip-top shape, with an emotional pull that your
reader cannot resist. It takes charisma, persuasion and sheer
will power to put what you preach into common practice. Take
your cue from Marshall Mathers and start converting those
admirers of yours into loyal paying customers any and every way
you can!

5. Eminem Does Dead-Ringer Impressions of Other People… do YOU?

Ever listen to Eminem pretending to be someone from a foreign
country, doing a “Valley girl” impression or making fun of the
way politicians speak? Blasphemous as that may be, that means he
has an ear for how people speak - their tone, their inflection,
the emotion behind their words. You must possess this same
talent of “emulating” others if you want to sell things on the
web and be good at it. Each product that you sell in your
lifetime must effectively speak the customer’s language, talk
his talk, walk his walk and essentially BE the customer,
speaking through your product. If you’re a natural imitator,
you’ll no doubt excel in direct marketing and up your Crowd Wow
Factor.

6. Eminem Emotionally Connects With the Audience… Do YOU?

You MUST engage your reader if you want him to keep coming back
for more. Just like Eminem makes every single person in his
audience FEEL SOMETHING with his intense, emotionally-stirring
lyrics… just like Eminem reaches out to touch the crowd with
his own hand… you must reach out and touch your audience with
your words.

In your copy, you must produce the desire for your product by
tapping the needs of your audience. The words on your page
should make the reader feel like you understand him so well that
you’re practically best friends. He must agree with what you say
to the point of being utterly convinced that you can provide the
solutions he’s searching for better than the next guy.

So are you content with your Crowd-Wow Factor, and ready to
become a Bona Fide Web Guru? Then take your lessons from that
disturbing rapper guy, Eminem… and start converting fans into
loyal customers as soon as TOMORROW.
