Current Recommendations are 30-60 Minutes of Exercise, Everyday?

Filed under: Online Shopping Resources — admin @ 11:56 pm

This is the latest advice to the public and many are surprised at the sheer quantity and confused as to what constitutes exercise.

Finding the time

For those of us with busy lives, fitting this into a day is not easy. Little time is left after a job, commuting, laundry, cooking and everything else. After a busy day do you feel like exercising anyway!? It is a struggle at first but many people are managing it and are reaping the rewards.

Dramatically reduced incidence of illness, you look and feel better, there are so many benefits to regular exercise it’s worth making an effort. For a beginner 30-60 minutes everyday is far too much. You need to start much lower and build up gradually. Too much too soon will leave you injured.

What sort of exercise are we talking about?

Well, benefits can be obtained from nearly any activity that increases the rate of breathing. These can include gardening, brisk walking, climbing stairs. Any activity that requires a moderate effort and preferably one that can be done for a set period of time.

You could begin exercising for just five minutes a day, or every other day and slowly increase the minutes, or days, every week. After a month or so, the activity or exercise will soon feel easier to do. This is when you start to feel the benefits of regular exercise.

Take it further

Soon you may find you’ve established a regular routine. The exercise you’re doing is becoming too easy or you want further challenges. This is the stage to experiment with other, perhaps more vigorous activities. Find your exercise strengths and see if there is a sport that matches.

The good thing about sports is having like minded people to play with. You may wish to test your ability by entering competitions or there maybe clubs you could join. Sports clubs and organisations can often open up a whole new way of life that can be very rewarding.

But, for now…

This may seem like a long way off today, but it’s something well worth working to. However, when it comes to benefiting from exercise, even a small amount can do you good.

With regards to exercising everyday, even elite athletes would recommend one day off a week, you need to rest and recover at some time. Be sure to include exercise in your life and discover what it can do for you.

Creating a Life List

Filed under: Management Portal — admin @ 11:28 pm

Last year I appeared in a Broadway musical. I was not a major character, but it was a major event. For three years I had had on my Life List “See a Broadway show.” And now there I was, sitting up on stage waiting for my turn as a contestant in a musical spelling bee. I lost after the second round, but I didn’t lose at all. I got to check off two items from my Life List–the one about seeing a Broadway show, and also “Do something truly gutsy at least twice a year.”

Creating a Life List gives us vision and direction. We may have a vague notion about what it is we want to do, see, and experience in our lifetimes, but writing those things down is often the first and most important step in accomplishing our dreams.

I separated my List into three categories:

1. Skills I want to learn
2. Places I want to go
3. Experiences I want to have

Because of my Life List, I’ve backpacked in Iceland, learned to make fire by rubbing two sticks together, completed and sold two novels–the List goes on and on.

And it does go on and on. Because as soon as I can check off one item, I make sure to add another to the List. There is always more to learn, more to try.

So here’s my challenge to you: Sit down for an hour tonight, or get up tomorrow and spend some time alone, and ask yourself:

1. What do I still want to learn?
2. If money and time were no object (you need this to dream big), what places on earth would I love to see?
3. What are all the things I can think of right now that I’d love to do during my lifetime, no matter what other people think?

It helps not to organize your thoughts. Just start with a clean page and write, write, write. You can be neat later. You can be practical much, much later. For now, just think and dream. See what it is you actually want out of this life. See who you really are, underneath that rational, grown-up exterior.

And when you think you’ve listed everything that’s on your mind right now, pick one item off the List. Want to learn French? Take the first step. Look on-line at your community college catalog. Scan your library’s website for language tapes you can check out. Or even rent a French movie to put yourself in the mood. It doesn’t matter how small or large the step is–what matters is taking it at all.

Dreaming is wonderful, writing it down is even better, but it’s still up to you to walk forward. Do just one thing every day or at least every week on your own behalf. More things are possible than we know.

Now let’s practice finding that out.

How To Use Flower Beds In Landscaping Your Garden

Filed under: World Of Gardening — admin @ 5:49 pm

The loveliness of flowering plants needs little embellishment by
description. Certainly every gardener seeks the beauty and color
that can be brought to his grounds by a variety of flowers. The
proper arrangement of flower beds in your garden and attentive
care to them can insure you a continuing bloom of lovely flowers
year after year.

For with planning, it is possible to maintain flowers in your
garden during the entire length of the growing season. Borders
and beds are planted with flowering annuals and perennials which
bloom at different periods during the year. By choosing
carefully initially, and by caring for the flowers thereafter,
the blooms will overlap each other, so that there will never be
a period when an old bloom disappears but that a new one will
start to show its color.

Preparing the soil for flower beds or borders requires greater
care than planting a lawn. For one thing, digging must be
deeper. It is not too much to dig the bed 2 feet deep, although
1 1/2 feet is suitable. It is, of course, possible to grow
flowers in a shallower bed than this, but the deeper you dig,
the better your production will be.

All heavy lumps should be broken up. It is a good idea to spread
some sand, cinders or ashes in the bottom soil to break it up.
Also, you might work manure, well-rotted compost, grass
clippings or peat moss into the bottom. Do not firm the bottom
soil down, but let it settle naturally.

Good loam should be used for the topsoil — e.g., well-rotted
manure, humus, peat moss, well-sifted leaf mold or heavy sand.
Wood ashes are fine for spring, and lime may be used for
loosening the soil. You might think about the character of your
soil and consider the particular fertilizer which contains the
elements your soil needs most. Should you use manure, be careful
not to let it touch the roots of plants.

Should you use manure, be careful not to let it touch the roots
of plants. The problems of color should be kept in mind when
planning flower borders and beds, so that while there is
sufficient contrast in texture and color of the flowers, there
is at the same time an attractive blending.

A plan for a bed of annuals, for example, might be designed to
stress zinnias, with contrast provided by such softer flowers as
chrysanthemum, scabiosa, nasturtium, cosmos and candytuft.
Siting of the flower bed is important. Ideally, it should be
close to the house, facing south or south west.

Any location that gets good sun, however, will produce well. The
border should be located away from trees or shrubs. These plants
absorb more than their share of moisture and nutrients from the
soil and, because of their strength, can overpower the more
delicate flowering plants.

A good background such as a stone wall or a fence adds to the
beauty of a flower bed or border, and evergreen shrubs make a
pleasing backdrop. Edgings need not be restricted, as they so
often are, to one color (e.g., the white of alyssum).

Coral bells, whose lovely foliage makes a handsome edge, are an
all-season flowering plant, and they provide unusual cut
flowers. Baby pansies, violas, portulaca, ageratum, dwarf double
nasturtium and dwarf marigolds are multi-colored flowers.

Cast Iron Gates - Add Distinctive Elegance to Your Home’s Landscape

Filed under: Home Improvement Center — admin @ 5:42 pm

Add a touch of elegance to your home’s landscape by installing cast iron gates. Cast iron gates are indeed one of the best ways to perk up the appearance of your home while at the same time providing you practical functionality.

Cast iron gates come in a wide variety of styles. No matter what your landscaping style there is sure to be cast iron gates available to fit your needs perfectly.

The three areas of differentiation in styles of cast iron gates are usually, the pickets that run across the top of the gate, decorative post caps, and decorative rail accessories.

Pickets – The most commonly used picket is the spiral picket.
Post caps – Post caps vary from a ball to a pyramid look.
Rail accessories – Rail accessories can be anything from a personal design, such as a logo, to the first initial of your last name.

Cast Iron Gates

The color choices of cast iron gates are somewhat limited: “Black”. You shouldn’t have to spend much time in this area deciding what you want. All kidding aside, black seems to be the over all color that goes with the style. Cast iron gates probably wouldn’t have as much appeal if they where silver or gray like standard fencing.

Although cast iron gates are elegant in design, pricing cast iron gates may scare you. Cast iron gates are not cheap. It would not be a good idea to match the price of cast iron gates to the prices of standard fencing; you will find that there is no comparison. On the other hand, with the popularity of prefab vinyl gates on the rise, the vinyl gates tend to come with a steeper price as well.

Keep in mind spending the extra money on cast iron gates appreciates the value of your home accordingly. Aesthetics and property value increase appreciably more than with vinyl fencing.

Connect with Your Inner Artist

Filed under: Self Improvement Tips — admin @ 2:45 pm

In the “Roadblocks to Creativity” e-course, we look at the 7 most common things that block our creative expression. So, if we’re “blocked” when we’re facing those things, what are we like when we’re free of them?

Well, certainly we’re connected to our “Inner Artist”. This is a part of each of us that is naturally:

Joyful – our Inner Artist sees the world as a magical place, full of curious things and people. Each day is a series of fun surprises and the chance to learn, practice and master the things we most love doing.

Exuberant – like a giddy child, our Inner Artist doesn’t worry about the repercussions of expressing the joy they’re feeling. We are who we are and that’s the only person we can be, when we’re connected with our Inner Artist.

Creatively Free – Our Inner Artist has a clear channel to the muse, to spirit, to the universe and to every creative force that has been seen and unseen since time began.

Undamaged – Whatever path our lives have taken up to this point, our Inner Artist remains whole and healthy.

Unhindered – our Inner Artist is completely unaffected by the internal and external factors that block our creativity on a day-to-day basis. Our Inner Artist is only aware of what’s happening NOW and is not only untouched by any previous hurts, it’s also unconcerned with any future outcome.

As a music therapist, it’s my joy to be able to meet the “inner artist” of my clients with special needs. No matter what their disability or limitation, I look for and consistently find that joyful, healthy and whole person to connect to – and I find it in the midst of creative play.

When we as artists are connected to this part of ourselves, we’re not only transcending our creative roadblocks (such as procrastination, negative thinking and people-pleasing), we’re in a state of consummate creative flow.

Put it into play

Just for today, approach your art as child’s play. Start your rehearsal by playing your instrument “wrong” or in two different keys. Write using only words that start with the letter “d”. Paint with your non-dominant hand. Make mistakes. Laugh.

Indulge your Inner Artist on an “artist’s date”. This popular concept from Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way” invites you to spend a couple of hours each week on an activity that feeds your creativity. Some examples:

Noodle – Play around on your instrument, with your art supplies or with new uses of words.

Doodle – On your sketchpad, on your wall or on the sidewalk.

Google – Get lost on the Internet, feeding your interests and creativity by seeing what’s “out there”. And what else is out there??

In other words, consciously spend time on creative pursuits that may not result in a product or well-defined outcome. Give yourself permission to TRY something and stay with it (or not, depending on how the mood strikes you), without knowing how it will turn out.

Determining How Much Life Insurance You Need

Filed under: The Insurance Way — admin @ 1:59 pm

When considering life insurance, you’re planning and preparing for an event most of us would rather not think about. But life insurance represents a critical step in managing your personal finances and ensuring your family’s well-being.

The Two Approaches to Life Insurance

You can use one of two approaches to estimate how much life insurance you should buy: the needs approach or the replacement-income approach. Using the needs approach, you calculate the amount of life insurance necessary to cover your family’s financial needs if you die. Using the replacement-income approach, you calculate the amount of life insurance you need to equal the income your family will lose. Let’s look briefly at each approach.

You need how much?

Using the needs approach, you add up the amounts that represent all the needs your family will have after your death, including funeral and burial costs, uninsured medical expenses, and estate taxes. However, your family depends on you to pay for other needs, such as your child’s college tuition, business or personal debts, and food and housing expenses over time.

The needs approach is somewhat limiting. The task of identifying and tallying family needs is difficult, and separating the true needs of your family from what you want for them is often impossible.

Replacing Income

Using the replacement-income approach for estimating life insurance requirements, you calculate the life insurance proceeds that would replace your earnings over a specified number of years after your death.

Life insurance companies sometimes approximate your replacement income at four or five times your annual income. A more precise estimation considers the actual amount your family members need annually, the number of years for which they will need this amount, and the interest rate your family will earn on the life insurance proceeds, as well as inflation over the years during which your family draws on the life insurance proceeds.
Note: Do remember as you quantify the income you want to replace that Social Security provides generous survivors benefits if you’ve qualified. These benefits can easily total $2,000 a month or more.

Calculating Replacement-Income Amounts with Excel

If you’ve got access to a computer running Microsoft Excel, the popular spreadsheet program, you can use your computer to calculate the amount of insurance you need to replace a specified number of years of income. Suppose, for example, that you want to buy enough life insurance to replace the income from a $50,000-a-year job for 15 years. If you figure your family will earn 5% on the life insurance proceeds should the worst case scenario occur, you enter the following formula into a cell in an Excel workbook to calculate the replacement income life insurance amount:

=-PV(5%,15,50000)

Excel returns the formula result 518,982.90 indicating that you would need roughly $520,000 of life insurance, invested at 5%, to payout $50,000 a year for 15 years.

Two Calculation Tips

If you want to factor in inflation because you’re trying to replace income over a long period of time, you should use a real rate of return rather a regular, or nominal, rate of return.
To calculate a real rate of return, subtract the inflation rate from the interest rate in the formula. For example, if you expect 2% inflation, you could replace the formula shown earlier with this formula:

=-PV(5%-2%,15,50000)

Here’s a final calculation tip: You probably want to round up your number. For example, if the formula provided earlier returns the value 518982.90, you might want to round up this value to $600,000. Or $750,000.

RV Refrigerator Efficiency 101

Filed under: Great Recreation Tips — admin @ 1:56 pm

RV refrigerators, for the most part, are efficient. In many cases it is something the owner does that makes the refrigerator less efficient. Before we talk about how to improve your RV refrigerators efficiency we need to have a basic understanding of how an RV refrigerator works.

For starters, keep in mind that your RV refrigerator is different from the one in your house. Your RV refrigerator doesn’t use a compressor or any moving parts for that matter. It works off of the principle of absorption. Instead of applying cold directly the heat is drawn out, or absorbed. The theory is, when there is an absence of heat there is cold. Basically your RV refrigerator uses heat, either from an electric heating element or LP gas flame. The heat starts a chemical reaction and then through evaporation and condensation causes it to cool. It also works off of gravity, freezing the freezer compartment first and then dropping down to the refrigerator compartment.

There are several things we can do to help the refrigerator do its job more efficiently. First and foremost the RV must be fairly level for the refrigerator to operate properly. Older RV refrigerators required more precise leveling, but even the newer models need to be close to level for optimum performance. Over time a cooling unit operated out of level will be permanently damaged. Traveling with the refrigerator on will not cause problems because the liquids and gases in the cooling unit are constantly moving around. They don’t collect and stay in areas of the cooling unit like they can in a stationary, out of level refrigerator.

The initial cool down process can take four to six hours. You should turn the refrigerator on the day before you plan to leave, and before you put any food in it. When you do load the refrigerator the food you put in should already be cold, and the food put in the freezer should already be frozen. Putting cold food in the refrigerator, rather than adding warm food, lets the refrigerator work less to cool down. One common mistake made is to over pack the refrigerator. There has to be space between the foods to allow for air to circulate throughout the compartment. In most situations you will have access to a store where you can buy food. A two to three day supply should be enough.

To assist with air circulation you can purchase an inexpensive, battery operated refrigerator fan. Put the batteries in and place the fan in the front of the refrigerator compartment blowing up. Cold air drops and warm air rises. The fan will improve the efficiency by circulating the air and it will reduce the initial cool down time by 50%.

The heat created by the cooling process is vented behind the refrigerator. Air enters through the outside lower refrigerator vent and helps to draft the hot air out through the roof vent. Periodically inspect the back of the refrigerator and the roof vent for any obstructions like bird nests, leaves or other debris that might prevent the heat from escaping.

To keep the refrigerator operating efficiently in the LP gas mode there is some routine maintenance you can perform. Remove the outside lower vent cover to access the back of the refrigerator. With the refrigerator turned off ensure all connections are clean and tight. Turn the refrigerator on in the LP gas mode and a look at the flame. If the flame is burning poorly, a yellow colored flame, or if the refrigerator isn’t operating properly in the gas mode it’s possible that the baffle inside the flue is covered with soot. Soot, rust and other debris can fall down and obstruct the burner assembly. When this happens it will be necessary to clean the flue and the burner assembly. Turn the refrigerator off again and locate the burner. Directly above the burner is the flue. The baffle is inside the flue. Wear a pair of safety glasses and use an air compressor to blow air up into the flue. After the flue is clean use the compressed air to remove any debris from the outside refrigerator compartment. Now, turn the refrigerator on in the LP gas mode to make sure it is working properly. Look for the bright blue flame. For a thorough cleaning of the flue and baffle it will be necessary to have your RV dealer do it for you. While it’s there have them to do an LP gas pressure test too.

Another good idea is to install a 12 volt, thermostatically controlled refrigerator vent fan at the back of the refrigerator, or at the top of the roof vent, to assist with drafting the hot air away from the refrigerator. If you are mechanically inclined these fans are fairly easy to install, or you can have your RV dealer install one for you. Either way it’s worth it. The fan removes the heat built up behind the refrigerator improving the refrigerators performance by up to 40%.

The outside temperature also affects the operation and efficiency of your RV refrigerator. When it’s cold out you can lower the temperature setting and when it’s hot out you can raise the setting. Some refrigerators are preset by the manufacturer. Extremely hot weather will directly affect the refrigerators efficiency. When it’s really hot outside try parking your RV with the side the refrigerator is on in the shade. Periodically inspect and clean the refrigerator door gaskets. Check them for a good seal. Place a dollar bill behind the seal and close the door. It should stay there and not drop. When you try to pull it out there should be some resistance felt. Do this in several different places and have any damaged seals replaced.

Try to limit the amount of times you open the refrigerator or freezer doors and the length of time you leave the doors open. Every time the door is opened it loses a few degrees of heat. On a hot summer day it won’t take long to lose all of its cooling capacity. Last but not least you should always have a thermostat in the food compartment. Food will begin to spoil at temperatures above 40 degrees.

RV absorption refrigerators do a great job for RVers. They will do an even better job, and last longer, if we apply these simple tips to make their job easier and less demanding.

Trading Forex to Advance Your Financial Position

Filed under: Finance Matters — admin @ 1:24 pm

Everyday, currencies are traded in an international foreign exchange market, otherwise known as the forex market, with the main marketplaces (otherwise known as bourses) existing in the world’s financial centes New York, London, Tokyo, Frankfurt and Zurich. Historically, the only way to participate was from the trading floor of one of these bourses, but today, people can trade forex from anywhere through a secure internet connection and a PC.

Today’s traders operate in a global network, taking positions in the market and making investment decisions based on either relative value between two currencies, or a particular currency’s actual price. Currency value fluctuations are constantly renegotiated through trading activity, and this activity, and the corresponding currency values are also indicators of the levels of currency supply.

An example of market behaviour greater demand for the Euro might indicate a weakening supply. Low supply and increased demand will drive the price of the Euro up against other currencies like the dollar, until the price better reflects what traders are prepared to pay when short supply exists. Another way to look at this situation is this higher demand means it will cost more
dollars to buy the Euro, which equates to a weakening of the dollar in comparison. Analysis of situations such as in this example forms the basis for a trader’s investment decisions, and they will purchase or sell currency accordingly.

This should be remembered, as while many see the foreign exchange market as the vehicle for converting their home currency while travelling abroad, many others choose to use the market to advance their financial position and secure their future.
