Sunny 16 Rule — Light Readings Without a Light Meter

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Ever get caught without a light meter? Stuck on an important photoghrapic expedition without a way of determining your exposure settings? Well I have, and it worked out ok, thanks to the Sunny 16 Rule and careful consideration of years of experience. Here’s the story surrounding this event and how it worked out.

High Investment Trip

For over 12 months I’d planned and prepared for this wilderness landscape photography trip to outback South Australia. I’d driven about a third of the way across the continent to get to my home base at Roxby Downs, a mining town in the arid desert. I’d driven on pastoral station roads for 82 km to Bosworth Station Homestead where I left the car and trailer. I’d ridden on my ATV (that’s a four wheel motorbike) for two hours over the roughest and rockiest ground you could imagine and set up a base camp on Andamooka Island.

Light Meter Lost

I camped the first night and went photographing just on daylight. At the start of my afternoon photo session my light meter was missing. It must have fallen out of my coat pocket while I was riding. If you could see the million, trillion rocks strewn over the desert and where I’d been on the bike, you’d understand that it just wasn’t worth looking for the meter. Five days of photographing in front of me and no way of getting accurate light readings.

Applying the Sunny 16 Rule

The Sunny 16 Rule says that on a sunny day the exposure is the reciprocal of the film speed at f16. That’s 1/ISO @ f16 Here’s how I applied the rule, making notes and an exposure table in my notebook:

First of all, please understand that there are a number of things in life where too much is better than not enough. Among them are your breakfast, your pay and film exposure. I was using 160 ISO film and the nearest shutter speed was 1/125 so I added 1/3 stop to line up with the available shutter speeds. That gave me 1/125 @ f16.

Next, it was winter so I added another stop. That made it 1/60 @ f16. That was fine for the middle of the day.

Being winter, the angle of the sun was low all day so I was photographing for most of the time except for a while around noon when I went back to my camp for a feed.

The above film exposure wouldn’t do for the early and late shots as the light level was decreased. For the first and last half hour of the day I added another two stops making the exposure 1/15 @ f16. Then for the two hours on the noon side of that, I added one stop to the middle of the day reading, making the exposure 1/30 @ f16 for that time period.

Of course, when I used the polarizing filter I added another two stops. When using 400 ISO black and white film I made a new set of figures adding three stops for the red filter.

In order to manipulate depth of field I changed the exposure settings around, 1/8 @ f16 becoming 1/4 @ f22, using the polarizing filter in the early morning.

Checking the Figures

Well, a fair bit of looking at the light and checking the figures went on for the next five days. When I got back to Roxby Downs I used another meter to check my exposure calculations at various times of the day and began to feel more at ease.

Great Negatives

When I got home and processed the black and white film and in due corse got the colour negatives and CD back from the lab, I was relieved and delighted to find that my exposures were pretty close to correct with good detail through the full tonal range from shadows to highlights.

Memorize the Sunny 16 Rule

When I get a new meter I’ll keep it on a cord around my neck in such situations. I’ll also keep the Sunny 16 Rule in the back of my head in case I need it again one day. Remember: f16 @ 1/ISO.

Who Does A Conservative Vote For ?

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Recently I received an email from a listener stating that President Bush was wrong for america, that although he fights terrorism he won’t guard our borders. He further stated that the President cuts taxes, but spends worse than any liberal in history. The listener went on to say just because the President is better than any democrat doesn’t make him good for the country.

Well ladies and gentelmen, herein lies the problem. Who do we conservatives vote for ?

The answer lies within the listeners email. Quote “just because the President is better than any Democrat doesn’t make him good for the country”. In his statement we find six words which answer our question, The President is BETTER than any Democrat . This doesn’t just make him good for the country it makes him BETTER for the country.

The Presidents recent annoucement of a new immigration policy and the fact that he has increased Federal spending are reasons for conservatives to be upset, but don’t cut off your nose to spite your face. Many conservatives are threatening to vote for the Democratic Presidential candidate, or not to vote at all.

Consider this, the democrats are in favor of an even more liberal immigration plan than the Presidents. The democrats would increase Federal spending even more than it currently is, remember Senator Kerry is considered to have a more liberal voting record than Senator Kennedy.

Many conservatives are forgetting that the President has stood with us on most issues that we hold dear, National Defense, Outlawing Partial Birth Abortion, Saving the sanctity of marriage, and cutting taxes.

The President refused to sign the Kyoto Treaty which was a largely unfair resolution that would have created huge environmental regulations on U.S. manufacturers, possibly causing job losses. He also refused to sign a weapons proliferation resolution in the U.N. that in part would have outlawed private firearms ownership throughout the world, for any country who signed it. He also unsigned the International Criminal Court treaty which was signed by President Clinton in December of 2000, which would have allowed for U.S. troops or Presidents, or anyone else for that matter to be tried for war crimes and other crimes as the ICC saw fit. The funny thing there is that President Clinton was one of the persons that the ICC was considering charging with war crimes, good thing for him that President Bush unsigned the treaty, or Clinton could have been seated next to Milosevich in the Hague!

Conservatives must wake up ! The best choice for conservatives, the best candidate to advance the conservative agenda is President George W. Bush.

You need only to look at the alternatives to come to the conclusion that President George W. Bush is still the man for the job !

I’m J.R. and that’s my take .

5 Goal Setting Secrets to Jumpstart Your Life

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

“Plan for the future, because that is where you are going to
spend the rest of your life.” - Mark Twain

Another year is upon us and you have your list of
resolutions or goals you want to accomplish in the upcoming
year. It’s time to plan your goals so that it’s not just another
conversation this year, but a focused plan for success. I will
share with you five goal setting techniques guaranteed to
help you achieve more out of life. Use the goal setting
techniques listed below to help you achieve your targets:

1. Be SMARTER with your Goals.

Make your goals:

Specific,

Motivational,

Action-oriented,

Relevant to your situation,

Time-bound,

Encouraging,

Rewarding

For example, “I will increase my sales by 15% compared to
last year.” Be as specific about your goal as possible. “I will
start my own catering business” is a lot stronger than “I
want to go into business for myself.” Challenging goals are
motivating. Set goals that will push beyond what you
usually think you can accomplish. Remember to set a
deadline. A goal without a deadline is simply a dream. Attach
a realistic yet challenging deadline for accomplishment and
post this where you can review it regularly.

2. Visualize your goals. Take 15 minutes in the morning and
15 minutes just before you go to bed; find a quiet place;
close your eyes and relax, and visualize yourself actually
achieving your goals. Remember the more senses (sight,
sound, smell, taste, etc.) you can involve, the more real your
visualization becomes. I ask during my seminars, “Have you
ever had a dream that seemed so real that you woke up in the
middle of it?” Well the reason for that is the subconscious
mind is at work involving all of those senses to trick you into
believing the dream is real. Well, you don’t have to wait;
work at visualizing your goals today.

3. Phrase your goal in the present tense and assume success.
Don’t say, “I want to.” Say, “I will.” This subtle technique
tells your subconscious that you have already achieved
your goal, which means it will work at helping the goal
become a reality. It will attract the people, places, and
situations you need to achieve that goal.

4. Put your goals in writing. This simple act helps you clarify
your goals and will allow you to visualize them more
effectively. I recommend that you record each goal on a
separate index card and review them twice a day – once in
the morning (when you first wake up) and again before you
go to bed. Post index cards where you spend the most time;
on the bathroom mirror, on the frig., on your nightstand, etc.
This process reinforces your goals, acts as a reminder, and
drives your goals deep into your subconscious. In fact, this
is one of the most powerful strategies you can use to
achieve your targets.

5. List the benefits you intend to receive by achieving each
goal. This will keep you focused and strong, particularly
when you face the inevitable roadblocks and barriers. In
June, when I chose to lose 20 pounds, I listed 12 benefits,
and when I had the urge to put butter on my veggies or help
myself to a second serving of food, I would review this list to
help me get past that craving. I lost the 22 pounds and two
inches around my waistline to date. I think I will go for
another 10 pounds. This was not a diet, just a lifestyle
change. The more benefits you can list for your goals, the
more motivating those goals will become.

So my challenge to you to is to take the time to plan your
goals. Start with one goal and visualize it, write it down, and
act on it. As I always say, “If you don’t invest the time to
set goals then someone else will do it for you. And I
guarantee you won’t like their goals.” Invest the time, start
today!

Marketing Managers Need Cover Letters, Too?

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Well, yes. If they want to get jobs, that is.

A cover letter takes the best of your qualifications professional traits and makes them enticing attractive to prospective employers. It’s a carefully crafted letter that directs the employer to the resume to determine why you are the best candidate for the job.

Competition for Marketing Managers is keen. You have to stand out from the crowd in a positive, exciting way to ensure you are the one employers are determined to hire.

How do you accomplish this?

If you have already written your resume, the words you need are basically prepared for you. It’s much easier to pull from the resume and reflect on your character when you have put the time in to document your professional personal history.

The cover letter builds on the resume and leads the employer toward it in an artfu. Its goal is to get the employer excited about the resume. It is a sales tool, just like the resume is. Sell yourself in a compelling and exciting way. Inject energy and let your best qualities reach the employer through carefully written examples and anecdotes. Don’t just state what you are capable of, show the employer with vibrant language that attracts and invites the employer to want to know more.

Let your personality show, but remain professional.

Advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales managers held about 700,000 jobs in 2002. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Are there a lot of Marketing Manager positions available? Yes, there are probably a lot of positions you COULD get, but do you want just ANY job? Or, do you want a job where you will have opportunities to advance, make more money and send your career to new heights?

You have to be your very best to get the great jobs. What skills and abilities do you have that you can offer the employer – and – how can you do so in a way that makes the employer pick up the phone and call you for an interview?

Start with your own “marketing materials”. Your cover letter and your resume are your sales resources. Make them work for you.

The cover letter is the first thing an employer sees. Make sure it is impeccable. Proofread it just as meticulously as you did the resume. If it has even one mistake, it could make the difference between getting a phone call or not.

State clearly what position you are seeking and tailor the cover letter, just as you did with the resume, to the specific position and employer.

Have you read that before somewhere? Yes, you have. That’s because it is very important. Mass marketing general resumes and cover letters to a host of employers is a thing of the past. Targeting a resume and cover letter is essential in today’s competitive environment if you are to be successful.

Look at it this way: Your competition is doing it. If you don’t do it, too, who do you think is going to get the interview and the job offer?

“Employment of advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales managers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2012, spurred by intense domestic and global competition in products and services offered to consumers.”
(Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Finding the perfect job in a great company will always take some work, but the rewards will be worthwhile if you take the time to work through the job-search process right.

A cover letter alone isn’t likely to persuade an employer to grant you an interview, but it is part of the whole package that WILL encourage an employer to want to get to know you better. Make it an exciting and enjoyable read and you will find yourself being offered the next Marketing Manager position you apply for.

Best of luck!

Do The World’s Poor Children Really Need A $100 Laptop?

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

The chairman and founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab
recently launched the $100 laptop to the world’s media. Is it necessary?

MIT rolled out a non-profit association, called One Laptop Per Child, to design,
manufacture and distribute laptops that will be provided to various governments at
cost price and issued to children by participating schools on a basis of one laptop
per child. These machines will be rugged, Linux-based and so energy-efficient that
hand cranking alone can generate sufficient power for operation.

The internet connectivity question is addressed in a few different ways, including
the use of Wi-Fi, WiMax, 3G and satellites, as well as fibre, coaxial cable and plain
old telephony. Competition, deregulation and the fact that the developing world is
now the only new telecommunications market, will all perhaps contribute to wider
reaching availability, greater bandwidth and, most importantly in these countries,
lower connectivity costs.

The solution offered is a $100 laptop: a durable, versatile machine at a price the
developing world can afford. The fact that this has been achieved is actually a
remarkable achievement, the very notion of which until very recently was shunned
by industry leaders as impossible.

The strongest argument in favour of this cheap laptop idea rests on the laurel that
the greatest assets of a people are its children, and so the highest social priority is
on the education of these children. Throughout disease, natural disasters, war and
poverty, education features as the primary solution to the problem.

Most educators would argue that effective learning stems from a fundamental level
of personal curiosity about a subject, and in a sense the ability to self-teach. The
key point here is not so much what each child knows so far, it is rather the
perspective that they can bring to bear on a problem. It is well known from case
studies that network learning, augmented by technology, computers and Internet
connectivity, bears heavy fruit in academic terms.

The economics of a $100 laptop base around the following: Around half the
purchase price of a new laptop is taken up by the cost of sales, marketing,
distribution, and of course the ever shameless profit-margin. By sidestepping the
entire retail market and distributing directly to governments in the absence of
profit-driven aims a huge chunk of the price per model is evaporated.

Physically the most expensive aspect would be the display. The use of an MIT
technology called E-Ink that offers the potential to be as low as 10 cents per square
inch and offer daylight readable clear resolution is promising. The processor,
memory and power can be stripped down, as the functionality of the machine need
not be so advanced beyond surfing, email and word processing all as open-source,
slimmed down software that takes up little computing resources.

It’s now without doubt that the $100 laptop will happen. As to whether it’s a good
idea? Everything about says yes, although the sociologists have yet to gather their
argument on this one it seems.

Release Fear for the Good of Your Life!

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Fear is an amazing feeling! It has significant power over our thoughts, feelings and actions. It takes on a “life of its own” and makes it appear as though we have lost the discerning power of choice in a situation. Fear can completely rule a person’s life.

So … why is it so amazing, you might be asking?

It has been said that “The only we have to fear is fear itself.” This is quite true, for fear is of our own making. Then, it spreads like wildfire!

How does fear really work? First of all, each of us creates a thought. At this juncture, it is a neutral thought. After creating this thought, we then determine that we are afraid about this thought. So, now the emotion of fear is linked to the idea/thought that we created.

To bring this into clearer focus reflect on the fact that not everyone is afraid or experiences fears about the same things. The race-car driver who comfortably goes in excess of 200 miles per hour might be afraid of the needle used for her vaccination. The high-rise window-washer who has no problem up on the 12th floor washing windows might become panicked learning to swim.

So, once we have an idea that is linked to fear, we do an incredible amnesia-thing. We absolutely forget that the act of linking fear to that thought was our own doing. We totally “space out” this fact. Instead, we begin to react to the fear as though it were a living, breathing, awe-inspiring entity all on its own. And not just any living, breathing, awe-inspiring entity: One that stirs up overwhelming FEAR.

Recognizing that linking-fear-to-the-thought was our own creation is a powerful step to gaining a sense of mastery over what in the past may have seemed overwhelming! Having recognized this, it is time for the next step.

One definition of FEAR is

False

Evidence

Appearing

Real

Pay attention to what that is saying. This simple acronym suggests that something seems to be real … and that perception is false. Or, simply stated, we are erroneously believing something. That something that we are believing is that we need to fear.

Now, do not get me wrong. I am not advocating wanton disregard for personal safety. Of course not! It is essential that you learn to determine the Correct Evidence Appearing Dangerous, too. If you are standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon, feeling nervous … step away from the edge a couple of feet. This is only honoring the fact that danger is possible.

If you are feeling nervous walking up an open stairway, by all means grab onto the handrail. You could fall over the edge of the Grand Canyon or off the open stairs and kill or hurt yourself. People HAVE done so! This is not an invitation to be foolish.

However, if you are 15 feet from the edge of the Grand Canyon, it is time to relax and enjoy the view; not to be so nervous that you cannot look for the fear of it all. The Grand Canyon is certainly an awe-inspiring sight. Profound fear can rob you of this inspiration and pleasure.

This need not be!

So, what can you do? You can make an agreement with yourself to NOT create the fear in the first place. In other words, you can CHANGE YOUR MIND about there being anything to fear. You can focus on ALL you have to gain … in a positive, productive way!

Here Comes the Sun (Signs) - Romance, Astrology and You - Earth Signs

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

TAURUS - (April 21 – May 21) Taurus is ruled by Venus and its symbol is the bull. Taurus is an Earth sign which is connected with fruitfulness and stability. You love luxury and sensual comforts such as silky satin sheets, robes fit for a king or queen and beautiful surroundings. You seek comfort, security and beauty. A perfect romance to you is one that is harmonious and beautiful, even if a bit materialistic. Because of your fondness for pretty things, you will proudly display your possessions and purchasing power. You are easygoing, calm, and comfortable to be around. You enjoy sharing “quiet times” with your love interest and also get excited about everyday activities such as shopping and cooking and dining. You tend to be stubborn and will do whatever you can to get what you want. When it comes to showering affection on the object of your desire, you enjoy physical contact. You have a very sensual nature and appreciate the pleasures of food, art, music, perfumes, fondling, or sex. Because you appreciate nature; a walk in the woods, hiking and rock-climbing may be considered exciting dates. You also love sunsets camping, gardening and simply being outdoors and can be attracted to those who are equally down-to-earth and outdoorsy. As long as your partner or mate displays the qualities of loyalty and honesty qualities which you likely possess, they will have your undying loyalty and a relationship destined to endure.

VIRGO - (August 23 - September 22) Virgo is ruled by Mercury and is symbolized by the Virgin. As an Earth sign, Virgo is connected with material things and practicality. The ultimate organizer, you gravitate toward anything that puts your analytical mind to use. To the outside world you may appear reserved and tend to hold back your emotions, when it comes to love, it’s no holds barred for the loving Virgo. You display great attention to detail which can be considered good fortune or a curse when it comes to relationships. You are good at remembering your partner’s desires (even those that were only mentioned in passing) and love to cater to those desires. To you, organizing the object of your affections is considered “flirting.” Your favorite role is to be of help and service to friends and partners. You are witty, perceptive and logical. Your reasoning powers help you to resolve conflicts easily and quickly taking your romance to new depths. You need a partner who will help you loosen your cautious shy nature. You are a good listener and communicator, an important aspect in romance. You love to “fuss” over your partner and can sometimes be seen as critical. Your partner should know though, that if you were not interested, you would not work so hard to help your love interest be “all he or she can be.” Good health is of great concern to you and you work hard to take care of yourself. You aim to please and when it comes to love you fall hard. Virgos are most attracted to those who keep themselves physically fit.

Capricorn – (December 22 - January 20) Capricorn is ruled by Saturn and is symbolized by the sea goat. As an Earth sign, Capricorn is motivated, determined and sets practical goals. Taking unnecessary risks is not your “thing,” even in the area of romance. You are ambitious and responsible. You will, however do “whatever it takes” to get what you want. Social status, reputation, position, and career are important to you. You use these to impress and attract the object of your desires. When it comes to love, no silly games for you, you prefer a more mature approach to courtship. Glamour and dazzle are more your style – so an evening that starts out in a limousine would be perfect. You are supportive and dependable, good qualities in any relationship. Security, a good home, and the finer things in life are what you strive for. You do not shy away from commitment, as long as it is with the right person – in fact you “play for keeps” and will be forever faithful. Some might consider you a loner, but do not be fooled by the aloof Capricorn. You are longing for a deep, meaningful relationship with just the right partner. Capricorns can be as powerful in the bedroom as they are in the boardroom, so lovers beware. You are seen by your peers as a “winner” and often attract the same. When it comes to romantic adventures, you are both practical and romantic so a perfect getaway for you could include both work and play.

Affiliate Marketing: Keyword Placement

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

I have been receiving a lot of email lately concerning keyword placement. One thing that I always try to stress to affiliate marketers trying to optimize their website is that search engine spiders have been programmed by humans. The point of that statement is that search engine spiders will read a document similar to how an actual human will read a document. Many of the sites that I personally review fail to keep this knowledge in mind.

Here are some things you should keep in mind when optimizing your websites keywords. Remember though, no one really knows how the search engines work for sure, but we have come up with some great ideas that have worked in the past.

If you are like most people, you start reading a document from top to bottom, left to right. When you need to know what the document will outline where do you look? You look at the top of the document to find the title and the first paragraph in hopes for a “glimpse” of what information the document will contain. Actually, I am somewhat guilty of reading the last paragraph of a document to find the “outcome” or “stand-point” quickly.

A search engine is no different. It is programmed with these basic principles in mind. It looks at the title, description of the document, the first couple of words of the document in hopes of getting a “glimpse” of what the document is about and it likes to read the end of the document – as it knows there is key relevant information in these areas. The footer is very important. Think about it this way, you read an ad in the paper – where are the terms and conditions (the important stuff). Yep – in the footer. Unfortunately, many website designers fail to put much effort into these key areas.

Well we already know that the title, description, first paragraph, last paragraph and footer are important and should contain the keyword and keyword phrases that you are optimizing your website for. However, what about left and right? Do the sides of a document matter? Yes!

What part of a webpage could tell you the most important information about “all” the information that website contains? The left side navigation! Think about it, most website have a navigation menu on the left side that contains keyword links the main departments in that website. I like to think of this left side navigation as the table of contents. Yes, it is that important!

The importance of this left side navigation is incredible, yet I see many websites that contain useless information here! Things like testimonials that have not one single keyword in them, graphics that are unrelated or that do not contain ALT tags with keyword rich descriptions and things of that nature.

I like to think that the search engine places massive amounts of weight in these areas in this order:

Title, Description, Left side navigation from top to bottom, First paragraph, Footer and finally the main body “filler” of the document.

I have had great success with many of my websites that have been keyword optimized in those key areas. Remember, the devil is in the details and ultimately every word on a website should be “optimized” and hand selected to appeal to your target audience. Since search engines are programmed to think like humans, you will see benefits in the search engines by just optimizing for human behavior.
