A Case for Multiple Intelligences Based Classroom Instruction

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

Although many high school age students tend to think and learn in nontraditional ways, American schools still base their instruction primarily on the verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences. As a result, many students who are not strong in these traditional intelligences develop poor attitudes toward school and their academic achievement suffers.

According to psychologist Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, intelligences change with age and with experience. Since our culture places so much importance on the traditional intelligences and since so many high school students have strengths in the nontraditional intelligences, it makes sense to incorporate the multiple intelligences into classroom instruction in order to provide experiences that will change students’ intelligences for the better.

This is not to say that the development of linguistic and analytical skills should be abandoned in favor of nontraditional approaches to education. Rather, traditional and nontraditional approaches should be combined to formulate a method of education that is best suited to the students who populate our classrooms. The multiple intelligences offer a balance which teaches students what they need to know in order to be successful in our society in a way that compliments the unique abilities that each individual possesses.

All students should have the opportunity to not only further develop their dominant intelligences, but should also have the opportunity to develop their weaker intelligences. Students who are weak in the verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences will certainly be at a disadvantage in a culture that places so much emphasis on the traditional intelligences. Despite their weaknesses, however, students who are given the opportunity to succeed using an intelligence in which they can excel demonstrate that they are capable of developing their verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences.

Because MI based instruction is designed to reach a combination of intelligences, the multiple intelligences classroom is perceived by students as a place where everyone can do something well, instead of as a place where some students are “smart” and others are not. MI focuses on students’ strengths and uses those strengths to build up weaker areas. According to Jie-Qi Chen & Gardner the multiple intelligences can bridge the gap from an area of success to an area of difficulty because “the sense of success in one area may make the student more likely to engage in areas where they feel less comfortable.” Since students are not made to feel as though they are stupid because they do not know something, a change in attitude takes place which effectively removes the “block” which once prevented learning.

Multiple intelligences based instruction is effective because it provides a comfort zone by allowing students to think in ways that are comfortable for them. It also helps them develop thought processes that they do not normally use by providing them with a positive environment in which they can experiment without feeling that they are not “intelligent.” Students who are strong in nontraditional intelligences often are made to feel that they don’t measure up to the rest of their classmates. Multiple intelligences based instruction provides all students with the opportunities they need to succeed, and students who have been successful are better equipped to attempt more challenging work.

In short, multiple intelligences based instruction has the potential to eliminate (or at least reduce) the number of American students who are currently stumbling blindly through our systems of education. These students can be provided with the opportunities that they need in order to succeed in school while they are improving the verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences that they will require in order to be successful in our society.

Tomorrow May be Too Late

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

A high school senior, looking forward to going to college, inspiring to become a doctor kisses her parents and dashes out the door to go to school, smiling, and waving goodbye — never realizing that before day’s end, she would meet the fate of a deadly bullet.

A husband and wife have a lover’s quarrel, laying back to back in bed — he, thinking about apologizing, she, thinking about talking tomorrow. They fall asleep, never realizing that before daybreak, tragedy will hit home, bringing a lifetime of regret.

Two friends, departing, and promising to stay in touch — to write — to call. Days, weeks, months go back, both thinking about the other but finding no time to express their thoughts. One friend finally, picks up the phone never realizing that time would find a terminally ill friend on the other end.

Later, and I’ll tell her how much I love her. Tomorrow, I’ll say I’m sorry. Later, I’ll call my friend. Tomorrow. Later. Tomorrow – Too Late.

We too often look for the negative, the unflourished qualities in those that we say we love, and too often push them away, instead of drawing them into our lives. Regret – grief — pain can come suddenly, without warning. We must cherish the moments that we have to spend with our loved ones, and not take them — or life for granted. We must give ourselves to life — give ourselves to others — give ourselves to love, realizing that if tomorrow does not come – we will have no regrets.

Take a moment — this day, to express your love, to give that overdue apology, or contact that friend – because you never know — tomorrow may be too late.

Meet Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

It often seems almost every child in the world knows the Thomas the tank engine and friends television show. A lot of them also have at least one of the great Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends toys. Sadly, some parents haven’t still heard of these cute railroad adventurers that live in a shed in the magical island of Sodor, despite the fact that Thomas has been around since their childhood too! For those parents, here is a brief list of the characters featured in the Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends TV show.

Our first pal is also the star of the show: Thomas. Thomas is a blue tank engine locomotive, the number one engine in the Fat Controller’s railway line. He is cheeky, friendly and kind, but he has the habit of doing jobs that are meant to be performed by bigger engines. He carries two coaches named Annie and Clarabel. Both Annie and Clarabel carry passengers, but Clarabel can also carry luggage.

The second engine in the Fat Controller’s team is Edward. He is proud to be Thomas’ friend and co-worker. His color is also blue, but he is older than Thomas. Like Thomas the Tank engine, Edward is very nice and kind to everyone in the island of Sodor. He is glad to help smaller engines in their work, and also when they get into any kind of trouble. Coaches love him, as all others do. Edward also plays the part of a “pacifier” locomotive: whenever the other engines are somehow misbehaving, the Fat Controller asks Edward to calm them down, and then Edward talks to them and soon things are back to normal.

The third engine in the team is Henry. Henry is a green locomotive. He is always proud of his shiny green paint, and everybody think he is a very handsome engine. He is a very long locomotive, and he is also very fast. Sometimes Henry gets ill, but he never says no to a job. I just don’t know why, but this is my favorite character of the Thomas the Tank Engine and friends show.

The number four engine is Gordon. Gordon is the locomotive that pulls the Big Express train. He is the fastest and most powerful locomotive in the entire island of Sodor, and he is very proud of that. In fact, he is so proud that sometimes he can get too arrogant. Gordon is the senior engine in the Fat Controller’s team. Usually, the other engines like to play tricks on him, which makes Gordon angry. However, he has a kind heart, and always forgives them. He usually uses his strength to help other engines.

The engine number five is James. He is a medium size engine that is really proud of his shiny red paint. He has six wheels.

The last one of the troupe is Percy. He is the engine number six in the Fat Controller’s team, and is also the youngest one of the locomotives. He is very kind and happy, and his job consists of sorting out the trucks in the yard.

The Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends TV show is a great learning partner for little kids, and knowing the basics about the characters will help you better relate with your children and help you follow along as both of you enjoy the delightful episodes of Thomas the Train, one of the best family shows on television.

Glutamates

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

Approximately 30 years ago, food manufacturers were competing against the American Homemaker for consumable dollars. Women, traditionally prepared food fed to the family and the food prepared came fresh and cheap!

Food scientists knew then that we have glutamate receptors on our tongues. Humans are driven to eat foods containing glutamates, even when we can’t taste them. Glutamates can enhance taste or the sensation of taste, but it also causes a chemical reaction soon after the glutamate receptors are activated.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and other glutamates (called free glutamates) can appear naturally in foods or may be included as additives by manufacturers in order, among other reasons, to increase the popularity of their products.

When glutamates are added to foods, they can release high levels of insulin, which cause changes in the metabolism. In a report written by Drs. N.A. Togiyama and A. Adachi and published in the medical journal Physiological Behavior, applying monosodium glutamate to the tongues of animals will release high levels of insulin within three minutes.

The hunger that follows such an insulin response could increase cravings, cause weight gain, and if repeated over tine, increase the likelihood of adult-onset diabetes.

Check you ingredient listing. Glutamates can go under a variety of names, including:

Anything enzyme modified
Anything fermented
Anything protein fortified
Anything ultra-pasteurized

Decorating is Entertainment- A New Way to Look at Your Decorating and Design Business

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

What do consumer’s expect during a purchase? Usually not very much. They used to making sacrifices in their satisfaction in exchange for a service or product. What an opportunity! The old saying “exceed your client’s expectations” couldn’t be any more accurate. It is as simple as that. What is not simple is how to do it. How do we thrill our clients every time? The business of decorating provides a thrill a minute, however, both good and bad. You need to know how to harness this innate power of our business and turn it into gold.

How do we excite and please our clients? This is an emotional game, and emotions are evoked during the interaction with our clients, and they become evident as expectations. Our target market are those people that love to decorate.. They love the showing off their homes to their family and friends. When they invite people to their home, they immediately give them a tour, this is their entertainment.

What a wonderful position to be in! How do we provide the experience, so our clients can entertain her friends? To do this we need to look at our business as “theater”. Everything we do needs to give the perception to our clients that they are buying an experience and not a collection of products. Every aspect of communication, expectations, appearance, sensory images, need to focus on this one outcome.

Face it, do our clients really need to buy anything more? Do they not have all they need? Our clients do not want to buy more things, they want entertainment, and they will pay a premium for it.

In the six scenes below I have named each category of business with a theater analogy. It is very interesting to see how the life on the stage can be inspiration to our business life in the world of decorating.

Scene One

(The Entrepreneur)

The Producer

As “The Producer”, we must make sure that all aspects of the business, from the letterhead to the client fulfillment systems all say “theater”. Nothing is left to chance. In a stage performance, it is a huge blunder if a stage hand is seen.

We should build our company around encouraging emotions, just like the entertainment industry does. Emotions are what our governs our lives, yet it is incredible that most businesses ignores this. This is the time to reinvent your organization. The ultimate client experience is giving the client exactly what she wants, which is customization. What luck, we are in the custom business! We provide the best products and services to exceed our client’s expectations. This must be enhanced by being sure all other aspects and communication with the consumer has the same intent.

The role of the Producer is to make visible the vision of the organization and to give the company all the tools necessary to entertain.

Scene 2

(The Manager)

The Director

The role of The Director is to interpret the vision of the Producer. This is done by directing the cast (staff). The cast need scripts (systems) to ensure a similar great experience for the audience (customers) each and every performance (sale). The cast needs to remember that work is theater and they need to remain in character during the time on stage (at work). It is the role of the Director to understand that to create a successful performance, the Company must strive to make memories not just sell goods or services. The Audience wants to be entertained.

Think about your experiences with other businesses. Remember the two check out clerks chatting across the lane while your groceries were being rung up? What about when your dentist who fails to call you in advance to advise you that he is running behind one hour. There are countless poor experiences we can relate to. It is up to you, the Director not to allow the cast to perform it’s own drama.

Scene 3

(The Marketer)

The Narrator

The Narrator tells the story to the Audience. He brings awareness of the important aspects of what needs to be communicated. As the storyteller, we need to make aware to our target market that we exist. Any performance that becomes a hit, does so from great word of mouth. Word of Mouth Marketing does not happen by accident. The narrator has the ability to encourage the spreading of the word, so that the company can have a long and lucrative run.

Scene 4

(The Decorator)

The Cast

The Cast are the crucial link to success. They are the front-line providers of a great performance and long lasting memories. The script (selling system) needs constant rehearsing to improve the critics approval (more sales). The theater of improvisation is a required skill. Acting off the interaction of the audience takes a lot of practice. The audience does not want a choice of experiences, they want a great experience each and every time. In order to do this the actor (decorator) must engage the audience (client) and reach deep to give a memorable performance.

Scene 5

(The Client)

The Critic

The critic is the master of our destiny. The critic must be thrilled with our performance. During the time of the show (from the sale to the delivery) we should be staging a client surprise at every available opportunity. When every other shows in town are providing the same typical experience, it is up to you to offer a great client experience that will thrill. The Critic’s expectations are emotional ones and we must tap into them. The role of pleasing the critic is not the actors alone, it requires a great crew. From the Producer, to the Director and to all the extras we need to be focused on the same outcome: Keep them coming back for more!

Scene 6

(The Bottom Line)

The “Sold Out” House

How do we charge for a great performance? Should we figure what the actual cost of the production is, in order to calculate our ticket prices, or should we base our prices on the value the audience is willing to pay?

The prices we charge should be based on the value perceived. Companies that entertain increase the price of their offerings much faster than the companies that do not meet their clients expectations. You should charge for the value you add, not the costs you incur. A company with a price advantage can always be undercut, a company with a performance advantage can always be out performed, but when everything is equal, you need to make things unequal. The way to do this is to focus on the value given. You must base the prices you charge on the value you create.

To do this you must make sure all aspects of your presentation justifies your margins. You will need to make it clear that the prices you charge are well worth it, and your clients will be thrilled to pay you. When you price with the consideration on perceived value, you focus on the results, not the process in pricing. Everyone in the production must be committed to staging this concept, so that nothing that the audience (the client) sees will sacrifice the margins.

Of course our style of entertaining is not done in a theater. We instead sell “lifestyle entertainment”. We are providing a service to improve our client’s expectations of their own lives. We make their homes beautiful and this brings a high level of satisfaction. Every aspect of bringing awareness to our company, to selling and providing client fulfillment is about exceeding expectations and entertaining.

Crafting Content to Attract AdWords Marketing Ads

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

Google has a two part advertising program that benefits
advertisers and website owners. AdWords marketing is a Google
cost-per-click advertising program that website owners can use to
promote their internet business through the search engines. The
advertisements placed through the AdWords marketing program are
displayed as sponsored links in Google’s search results and on
websites belonging to website owners who participate in the
Google AdSense program, Google’s second advertising program.

The concept of AdWords marketing and AdSense is a revolutionary
idea because advertisers in the AdWords marketing program benefit
not only from listings in relevant search engine searches, but
also from having their Google Ads placed on websites that contain
related content. Website owners are thrilled to place the AdWords
marketing ads on their websites because the ads are non-
intrusive, they provide relevant information for their website
visitors, and they generate revenue because the website owner
makes money every time a website visitor clicks through to a
website. The two advertising programs are very beneficial because
they provide advertisers in the AdWords marketing program with
maximum exposure and provide website owners great revenue
potential with participation in the AdSense program.

The key to making money with the AdSense program is to display
AdWords marketing advertisements on your website that are
actually of interest to your website visitors so that they will
click on the advertisements and visit the advertisers’ websites.
It is also important to drive massive amounts of traffic to your
website in order to make money from the AdWords marketing ads.
Your website content is the major factor in accomplishing both of
these feats, so the purpose of the content must be considered
during the copywriting process.

Your entire website, as well as each individual page in the
website needs to have content that is relative to the keyword
search terms you are targeting for the purpose of earning money
by displaying AdWords marketing ads on your website. Good keyword
copywriting techniques will produce high quality, relative
content which draw in relative AdWords marketing ads that your
website visitors will actually be interested in clicking on. The
more content pages you have, the more advertisements you can
display and the more money you will make from using the AdSense
program to display AdWords marketing ads.

The second side of the coin for making money through displaying
AdWords marketing ads on your website is to drive loads of
qualified traffic to your website. The website traffic is
necessary to produce revenue from click-throughs for the AdWords
marketing advertisements. Your website content and its relevancy
to keywords used in the search engines to find the information
you are displaying plays a large role in driving traffic to your
website. Keyword rich content combined with link popularity and
link relevancy can help you to achieve desirable search engine
rankings for your website. You can also use pay-per-click
advertising programs, including AdWords marketing, and place your
own paid advertisements in the search engines to attract targeted
website traffic to your website.

By conducting keyword research you can identify the highest
paying keywords for the AdWords marketing program. The higher
paying the keyword is, the more money you will make for a click-
through on the advertisement. When selecting the highest paying
keywords for your content, be sure that you don’t lose sight of
the purpose of relevancy by using unrelated keywords just because
they pay a higher click-through price. To find out which keywords
are the highest paying, you can use tools provided by Google for
participants in the AdWords marketing program, or you can use
WordTracker to do your keyword research if you are not an AdWords
marketing user.

Treating Head Lice

Treating Head Lice by Margaret Tye

Your children getting head lice is probably one of the worst
fears of a parent and yet it is one of the most common health
problems. If your children grow up without ever catching them
you are lucky indeed.

Head lice cannot jump, they crawl from head to head which is why
they are so common amongst children who tend to sit close
together. If your child does get infected it is wise to wash all
bedding and treat furniture where their heads may have rested,
but healthy head lice tend to stay on heads rather than move.
However sharing combs or brushes where the lice may have been
removed during combing will spread them.

The life cycle of lice is about a month. The lice eggs or nits
are attached to the hair close to the scalp and are very hard to
remove. They hatch in 7 to 10 days and reach adulthood in
another 6 to 10 days. They then live for another 20 days laying
about 10 eggs a day.

Head lice are difficult to treat and to prevent the infection
recurring, vigilance is needed to ensure that no eggs remain to
hatch. Not everyone actually gets an itchy head so if someone in
the family is infected all heads should be checked. Some people
find the idea quite horrendous, when my granddaughter became
infected my daughter would shake when she was trying to remove
them. As a primary school teacher I had seen so many infected
children I was unmoved.

Unfortunately head lice are becoming immune to chemical
treatment and many parents prefer not to use it anyway. Another
solution is to use hair conditioner, left for a while, then
combed with a nit comb. If you wipe the comb on a piece of
tissue you will see the head lice even if they were invisible on
the head. This has to be repeated every 3 days for at least two
weeks to ensure any newly hatched eggs are caught. Personally we
found that olive oil, which we left on overnight after combing,
worked better and left the hair in a lovely condition. However
the problem kept recurring and finally I bought a battery
operated flea comb designed for pets which we found very
effective. I have noticed that these are now advertised for head
lice.If you decide to use one, check that the manufacturer
guarantees that it is safe to use on a child. You should always
remember that a child’s skin is very sensitive. Advice on health
matters should always be confirmed with a doctor and no
liability is accepted for action taken .

Barriers to Self Care

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

Copyright 2005 Peggy Porter

For many women, the term self-care often becomes a foreign concept once motherhood occurs. Why?

I believe there are several key reasons why mothers find it difficult to take better care of themselves:

Time - One of the major barriers to self-care is the feeling that there’s just not enough time. Going from leisurely lunches with friends (before the days of motherhood), to sleepless nights, packed lunches and car pooling, is a huge adjustment. Often we are left feeling stretched for time.

Multiple Role Players - In today’s society, moms play multiple roles - everything from career professional, soccer mom and committee volunteer, to chauffeur and housekeeper. How can we find time for ourselves while juggling all these roles?

Guilt – Feelings of guilt play a huge part in why mothers spend little time taking care of themselves. Guilt can be associated with being away from our family due to work commitments, taking an hour to ourselves when there already seems to be so much to do, or by just trying to do something that is important to us and does not involve the family.

As moms, we believe that by being away from our kids, or not involving them in virtually everything we do, we are somehow not living up to our duties and responsibilities.

Perfectionism - The need for perfection in our lives is another barrier to self-care. Perfectionists are always seeking that ultimate feeling of having everything under their control, often not doing (or enjoying) anything unless it can be done perfectly.

Seeking perfection in our self-care may lead to not participating in it at all. Self-care can’t wait until everything else is perfect.

At times you will need to forego the housework, committee meeting or staying late at the office. Not all things can be completed before incorporating self-care into your day. For perfectionists, this concept is a difficult one, therefore adding to the neglect.

Lack of Support - Lacking a support system is a common reason many mothers do not participate fully in their self-care. Many women may not have the support of a partner or family members to help out in order to give them time to themselves.

Poor social supports and few friendships can contribute to the lack of connection women feel at times. This emotional connection is necessary for your health and happiness, and is also a major part of self-care.

Finances - Financial status may also play a part in the frequency in which women participate in their own self-care. Often mothers conclude that if only they had more money they would take better care of themselves.

As you can see, there are several reasons why we as mothers may put
self-nurturing at the bottom of our list. For our own health and happiness however, we need to start moving it up to the top.

talking about things relating to love and romance such as
novels, movies or songs. It is your way of flirting with the
object of your desires. You are a charming, gracious and
considerate lover and can adapt your style to attract the one
you desire. In fact, you like to be partners in most aspects of
life and will find ways of including those you love and admire
in your plans, whether it be at work, home or play. Although
crowds of people don’t seem to bother you, you prefer spending
time with your love interest alone rather than in a group
setting. You may start out at a big gala affair, but will look
for an appropriate time to get away so the two of you can spend
time alone together. You are a thoughtful partner and lover and
give your full attention to your mate. Giving your undivided
attention is your way of flirting. You have a keen interest in
others and can lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on. You love
courting and or being courted by the object of your affection.
Hearts and flowers go a long way in the romance arena of your
life. Librans do not like to be manipulated, fair play is an
absolute must.

Aquarius - (January 21 – February 21) Aquarius is ruled by
Uranus. An Air sign, Aquarius is very social, and is symbolized
by the water bearer. An inventor at heart, you can be seen by
others as a little “quirky,” often gravitating toward the future
and progress of humankind. You are considered a visionary and
open-minded looking for less conventional ways of being and
doing than the other signs. You don’t generally break down under
peer pressure; you prefer to be different from others. You are
highly liked and surrounded by friends because you know how to
be one. A humanitarian, you long for social reform and prefer
those who share your thoughts on life over those who easily
conform to societal pressures. You tend to be more attracted to
the outrageous than one who looks and act like everyone else.
You are sometimes thought of as a “rebel with a cause” and will
be attracted to a partner who you shares your desire to change
the world. You are a free spirit who needs his or her own space,
but don’t mind sharing that space with the object of your
affection, as long as you don’t get pushed into a corner. You
enjoy sharing your vision of the future with the one you desire
and consider it your way of flirting. Sometimes you appear aloof
or unemotional, which can be a turn-off for some. Not to worry,
the right person will find it attractive and be curious to know
what lies beneath that detached exterior. It seems an odd way to
“flirt”, but it can be attractive to those who are curious and
have a similar demeanor. It is the game of “intrigue” that can
often turn someone on and make them want to know more. The
Aquarius is a creative and imaginative in lover and will often
seduce the object of their desire in unusual ways (and places).

Use A Mortgage Calculator To Guide Your Home Equity Loan Decision

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

The difference between a home loan and a home equity loan lies mainly in that the home equity loan, also known as a second or even third mortgage, is issued at a higher interest rate. This interest rate is lower than you could expect to pay on a credit card, but it will be still higher than the original interest rate.

Use a home equity mortgage calculator to see what releasing different percentages of your equity makes to the payments required. The mortgage calculator then allows you to compare whether this is the best course of action open to you.

The alternative which may be more attractive financially is refinancing your home completely. This is where the mortgage calculator can really work for you. There are a number of options when refinancing, especially if you have a substantial amount of equity in the home. By inputting these, one at a time, into a mortgage calculator you can create a list which will allow you to clearly see which option benefits you best.

Home equity loans often seem far more attractive to the home owner than they actually are. This is because the lender is hoping to seduce you into signing your property into his hands. Find out all the details and use your mortgage calculator. See if what you calculates matches what they want you to sign for. Later you may find that it wasn’t such a good idea as your home suddenly becomes under threat of foreclosure because of some contractual obligation that you hadn’t fully understood.

Only in extreme circumstances should you even consider a home equity loan that completely strips your property of any value over mortgage total. Keep your payments affordable by using the mortgage calculator and always factor in an additional percent or two on the interest rate.

Refinancing your home is a major step, but as with a first mortgage this is the only claim on your property. If you take out a home equity loan instead, then you will have an additional lender who has a financial stake in your home. If you decide that you much prefer the terms on the home equity loan, and the mortgage calculator seems to bring it well within your budget, then make sure you read the small print carefully.

You need to know what the payments are for: are they just interest which will leave a large capital balance payable at a later date, for example? Make sure you can afford these additional monthly payments.

Here are a few don’ts that will help you in the long run:

* Don’t lie to yourself or your mortgage calculator.

* Don’t over-estimate your income under any circumstances; treat overtime money as “extra” if possible, and not part of your usual salary.

*Don’t over-estimate the equity in your home in the mortgage calculator. This can lead to false hopes which your property appraiser will quickly dispel.

If you are hoping to use the released capital to make home improvements, these should add value to your property. Look into this carefully to find out approximately how much you’ll be increasing your property’s value before committing to either the loan or having the work carried out. Failure to carry out the work means you are still responsible for the loan, but that you have not created any new equity.
