Healthy Fish Recipe

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Fish is one of the healthiest meats that you can eat, but most people have no idea how to cook these healthy fish recipes. I am not talking about the frozen fish fillets that can be full of sodium or have other non-healthy breading on them; I am talking about fish such as salmon, tune, or mackerel.

Because of the great amount of omega-3 fatty acids these fish contain the American Heath Association recommends that you eat this sort of fish twice a week. These fish can be cooked in an array of ways that will bring a healthy but tasty fish dish to your table.

One great healthy fish recipe is Baked Salmon. This dish is easy to prepare and is sure to please even the meticulous of people at your dinner table.

For this recipe you will need:

  1. 1 ounce can of salmon,
  2. 8 ounces of tomato sauce,
  3. ½ teaspoon of hot sauce,
  4. 3 tablespoons of Miracle Whip,
  5. 1 sliced tomato,
  6. 1 ounce of grated low fat cheddar cheese,
  7. 3 tablespoons of cream or milnot,
  8. 1 teaspoon of garlic powder,
  9. salt and pepper to taste.

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Flake the salmon and place it into a medium sized oven pan. In a bowl, mix the tomato sauce, cream, salt, and garlic powder. Pour over the salmon. Place the tomato slices on top in a decorative manner and then scatter the cheese on top. Bake until cheese is melted.

You can try this recipe with either tuna or mackerel as well. Either type of fish will bring a delightful taste to your palate that is sure to become a family favorite. Along with your healthy fish recipe, you can prepare other green vegetables such as fresh green beans, broccoli, or Brussel sprouts. However, if want something quick, just fix a green salad.

No matter which type of fish you choose, your healthy fish recipe will be enjoyed time and time again. You may wish to try adding other vegetables such as onion, green pepper, or even zucchini for a unique and tasty treat.

And Yet It Moves

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

The news that the South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk has been fired from his prestigious seat with Seoul National University caused shock waves in the medical world and beyond. His claims, going back over several years, to have cloned the first human embryos and to have extracted stem cells from them, turned out to have been false. Six other professors working with Hwang have also been disciplined.

His research had raised hopes of finding cures for a range of afflictions, including Parkinson’s disease, and Alzeimer’s. The disgraced professor has apologised for producing faked results, but remains convinced that he was heading in the right direction, and that sooner or later someone else would make the breakthrough.

Not least of the outcomes of Hwang’s fakery is the damage done to the public perception of science. We tend to put scientists on a pedestal, and it comes as a shock when one of them is caught with his hand in the cookie jar. What happened at Seoul is grist to the mill of the anti-science lobby, which would claim it proves that science is unreliable and that scientists cannot be trusted.

In my opinion this argument misses the point. The integrity of scientists can be relied on precisely because falsification cannot be hidden, at least not permanently. The simple fact is that nothing in science is given credence unless it can be tested and verified independently by other scientists. That is what keeps science honest.

In 1925 science was, in effect, put on trial when a young biology teacher from Dayton, Tennessee called John Scopes, was arrested for teaching evolution in violation of state law. The Monkey Trial, as it became known, was really a show trial and Scopes was a willing guinea pig, used to test a new law which banned ‘any theory that denies the story and divine creation of man as taught in the Bible’

Clarence Darrow, America’s foremost lawyer at the time, offered to defend Scopes without a fee, and the prosecution was headed by a former presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan. Darrow apparently had the best of it. The contentious HL Mencken was one of the reporters on the trial, and described how Darrow goaded his opponent; “His face flushed under Mr. Darrow’s searching words, and he writhed in an effort to keep himself from making heated replies. His eyes glared at his lounging opponent, who stood opposite him, glowering under his bulging brow, speculatively tapping his arm with his spectacles”. In the end, John Scopes was found guilty by the jury and fined $100. Both sides claimed a victory.

Probably the best known case of deception in the 20th century was that of ‘Piltdown man’. Piltdown was an archaeological site near Hastings, East Sussex, where fossil remains were found in 1913, which were thought to be the ‘missing link’ between men and apes. In 1953 it was discovered that the cranium was of a modern human and the jawbone belonged to an ape. The discovery caused enormous embarrassment in scientific circles, particularly in view of the amount of time which had elapsed since the original excavation. To some, this was proof positive of the fallibility of scientific results, but in fact scientists were denied access to the remains for many years, and had to be content with plaster models.

It is stating the obvious to say that in the ninety years or so which have elapsed since the Piltdown discovery, technology has improved beyond anything dreamt of in those days. There are now many ways of testing and examining fossil remains, and taken together, they remove most of the guesswork from the dating process. In the end, the fraud perpetrated on the scientific community by some unknown person all those years ago, was uncovered by scientists, which surely demonstrates that science is able to correct its own mistakes.

Whoever set up the Piltdown fraud was clearly bent on mischief, but in the case of Paul Kammerer and the Midwife toads the scientist involved acted from the same muddled good intentions as Hwang Woo-suk. Paul Kammerer was an Austrian biologist, working in the early part of the 20th century. He had what we would call celebrity status, and besides being a renowned scientist, he was a musician and composer, mixing with the Viennese intellectuals, artists and musicians of the time, including Gustav Mahler and the conductor Bruno Walter.

Kammerer wanted to resurrect the earlier theories of Jean Baptiste Lamarck, which postulated an alternative view of evolution to that of Charles Darwin. Lamarck suggested that physical characteristics (and by inference, mental ones), acquired during the lifetime of an organism, could be passed on to its offspring. Lamarckism had long since been abandoned by scientific thought, but Kammerer believed he could induce hard pads on the forelimbs of Midwife toads which could then be passed on to the next generation, and so prove Lamarck’s theory of the inheritability of characteristics.

Unfortunately for him, at the height of his fame, an American scientist by the name of GK Noble, on examining one of Kammerer’s specimens, discovered indian ink in the pads. This was the end for Kammerer. His twenty-six years of careful studies were compromised, and shortly after, he took his life.

The word ‘science’ comes from the Latin ‘scienta’ and simply means ‘knowledge’. Probably the first man who thought like a modern scientist was Leonardo da Vinci. Aside from being a great painter and a passable lute player he had an insatiable curiosity about the world. He produced a vast series of notebooks with observations on anatomy, cloud formations, plans for cities, military inventions, tanks, flying machines and submarines. He was also fascinated by recurring patterns in nature.

Leonardo’s restless and brilliant intellect rarely allowed him to finish anything. It was left to three great astronomer/mathematicians; Copernicus, who was his contemporary, and a little later, Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei to lay the foundations of modern science.

Copernicus re-discovered what some of the Ancient Greeks had known; that the sun was at the centre of the solar system, and that the earth revolved around it. Heraclides and later Aristarchus proposed this idea over two thousand years ago. At that time, however, most scholars followed Ptolemy and Aristotle in believing that the earth was the centre of everything, a perfectly natural and sensible point of view, given the available evidence.

Unlike Galileo, who followed him, Copernicus was a careful and rather timid man, and did not publish his findings until very late in his life. In fact, it is said that he saw his work in print for the first time when he was dying. He never completely resolved the problem of the motions of the stars and planets. This was because In common with all astronomers of his day he still followed the ancient traditions, in assuming that planetary orbits were circular, and this skewed all his calculations somewhat.

It was left to the Polish astronomer Johannes Kepler in the next century to realise that in fact planetary orbits were elliptical. This was an amazing idea at the time. He had to assume that there was a force preventing the planets from flying off into space, and it was only when Isaac Newton demonstrated the existence of gravity in 1687 that his idea was confirmed.

Kepler was a superb astronomer and mathematician, and it bothered him greatly that, like Copernicus, he could not quite make his calculations fit his observations. There is an intriguing story relating how he finally achieved the breakthrough. It seems he went to bed one night with the problem on his mind and had a dream in which a spirit grasped him by the shoulders and repeatedly slammed him from the floor to the ceiling, shouting, “The orbits are elliptical, they are elliptical!” Next day he entered the elliptical orbit into his calculations and everything fell into place. The orbits were explained.

Galileo was the first to use modern scientific methods based on experiment and testable observations. In 1608 some spectacle makers from Flanders came to the Republic of Venice, where Galileo was staying, with their new invention, a spyglass for identifying ships well before they entered a harbour. Galileo heard about it and promptly set about figuring out how it worked. He not only succeeded in constructing his own spyglass, but went on to build a second one with the magnification stepped up by eight, and finally thirty times.

When he turned the telescope on the night sky, he discovered sunspots, the phases of Venus, the craters of the moon and the four large moons of Jupiter, now called the Galilean satellites. Galileo was now able, with his own observations, to back Kepler’s assertion that nothing in nature is ‘perfect’

It was inevitable that Galileo’s beliefs would come to the attention of the Pope. Maffeo Barberini, Urban 3rd, was in fact an intellectual and patron of the arts, and would have preferred to let the matter drop, with a little co-operation on the part of Galileo. But Galileo was not strong on tact and diplomacy. Possibly he thought his position and intelligence would save him, but it was not to be. In April 1633 he was arrested and brought before the Inquisition.

He was shown the instruments of torture that could be used on him, and invited to recant his heresy. Galileo was well aware that in 1600 the philosopher Giordano Bruno had been burnt at the stake, with his tongue tied to prevent him speaking. His crime had been to champion the teachings of Copernicus and to advocate free speech in general. Galileo was an old man and knew he could not fight the Catholic church. He was invited to kneel and deny that the earth orbited the sun, which he did. As he stood up he is supposed to have muttered, “Eppur si muove!” (And yet it moves!).

If I had to look back to find the starting point of our modern world, I think I would have to pick the sun-centred theory of Copernicus. As the great German poet, novelist and natural philosopher Geothe wrote in the 18th century, “Of all discoveries and opinions, none may have exerted a greater effect on the human spirit than the doctrines of Copernicus. The world had scarcely become known as round and complete in itself when it was asked to waive the tremendous privilege of being the centre of the universe. Never, perhaps, was a greater demand made on mankind – for by this admission so many things vanished in mist and smoke! What became of our Eden, our world of innocence, piety and poetry; our testimony of the senses; the conviction of a poetic-religious faith? No wonder his contemporaries did not wish to let all this go and offered every possible resistance to a doctrine which in its converts authorised and demanded a freedom of view and greatness of thought so far unknown, indeed not ever dreamed of”.

Today, of course, science touches every aspect of our lives. Our world could not exist without it. Perhaps it never could, for surely when we began to use fire, stone tools and agriculture we took our first steps along the path of science. If science is a tool, it works spectacularly well, but like any tool, it can be misused. The question is not whether we can trust science, but whether we can trust ourselves. Watch this space.

What is Ayurveda?

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic healing system which treats the mind, body and spirit as a whole. Ayurveda translates as ‘the science of life’ and is still India’s mainstream health care system. It works on the philosophy of ‘Prevention is better than cure’ and uses medicinal herbs, oil therepies, massage, yoga and meditation together with diet and lifestyle choices for specific body types and temprements - in order to restore and maintain well being.

Legends say that about 3 million years ago, a group of Indian sages travelled high up into the Himalayas in search of enlightenment. They wanted to banish all disease from the world because only those who are physically, mentally, and spiritually healthy could reach enlightenment. So they meditated collectively on how to get rid of illness – and eventually the secret of true health and happiness was revealed. These findings were preserved in the ancient vedic texts. The Ayurvedic sages believed that a healthy state is a natural state, and deviation from this natural state by taking on stresses found in modern living, and from an inappropriate diet, will ultimately lead to ill health. There is a direct link between emotional distress and physical disease – and ayurveda treats both mind and body to cleanse and rejuvenate one back to their true balance.

The concept of the 3 ‘doshas’ is at the heart of Ayurveda. Vata (like ‘air’, or wind), Pitta (like ‘fire’ or bile) and Kapha (like ‘water’, or phlegm). These are the 3 forces that work within us all and they determine our body shape, colouring, metabolism and emotional temperament – among other things. Your individual type is known as your ‘prakriti’ and this gives clues as to which types of disease you will be prone to, making prevention easier. Illness occurs when the dominant Doshas in prakriti ‘take over’ or when your dominant Dosha becomes imbalanced, which normally causes an increase in its main element, e.g. - imbalanced Pitta usually results in excess ‘fire’ element, resulting in symptoms such as burning sensations or inflammation. Everyone has the three Doshas, yet normally, there are one or two that dominate in our prakriti. e.g. a pure ‘Vata’ type is someone who has lots of Vata energy compared to Pitta and Kapha energy. A dual type such as a Pitta-Kapha, would have relatively more Pitta and Kapha compared to Vata.

Ayurveda in a complex science, but it can be easily simplified and used at home in everyday life. If you are suffering from a ‘fire’ inbalance - with which you could be feeling hot emotions such as anger, or experiencing hot rashes or fever - it makes sense to cut out foods such as hot spices and alcahol, and replace them with options that have cooling properties. However, if you experience symptoms that indicate you do not have enough of the ‘fire’ element - such as sluggish digestion or chills - it will help to eat foods with heating properties, as well as massage with warming oils.

Establish Your Credibility For Better Public Relations

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

I had a college professor one semester that was so captivating
in his lectures that I was hesitant to leave when the class was
over. I probably would have been content to sit there and listen
to him spout off about anything as long as he kept talking. He
was interesting, yes, but even if he had stated that cats could
talk and buildings could walk, I probably would have believed
him solely based on how much I trusted and respected his
knowledge.

There are many aspects of public speaking that should be taken
into account when incorporating speeches and presentations into
a public relations campaign. One of the first ones that should
be considered, though, is the issue of credibility.

What is credibility? Well, it incorporates a lot of things, but
the main point to remember is that when you are credible, people
are more inclined to trust you and believe that you are a
reliable source of information.

So how do you go about building your credibility? Well, let’s
take a closer look at what defines credibility.

Competence: If you stand up in front of an audience and decide
to talk about Darwinian logic without any sort of conception of
who Darwin even was, your audience probably isn’t going to
believe that you have the authority to be speaking on such a
subject. However, if you list your information sources in your
presentation along with a quote or visual aid, your audience
will know that you did your research, and that you know your
stuff.

Other ways to show your competence is to let the audience know
about your educational or professional background. You don’t
have to sound like you’re putting on airs here, because the
simple truth is that the more work you’ve done in a specific
area, the more you will know about the topic.

Confidence: Looking like you are nervous and uncomfortable
doesn’t say much for your knowledge. It doesn’t matter if you
spent twenty five years living with gorillas, people aren’t
going to have nearly as much respect for your points about
primate communication if you don’t look like you have any
self-assurance. Delivery packs just as much of a punch as a
thorough intellect, as long as you remember that you need both
to give a great presentation.

Character: Character is a little trickier, because it’s based
more on a values system than on how much you know about
something. If you’ve researched your audience’s demographics
beforehand, you will have more of an idea what sort of issues
they will or will not respond to. Even if you are presenting
something that is the antithesis of everything they stand for,
you can still find ways to word your arguments so that you will
appear credible and non threatening.

Rapport: Ah, rapport. Common experiences and interests are what
help us as humans relate to each other. If your audience knows
you share similar feelings with them, they will be more likely
to respond to your message in a positive way.

As a society, the majority of individuals tend to hold a pretty
similar system of values that you can use to help you build your
own credibility. Social and community values seek to attain such
ideals as peace, freedom, respect, family security, and living a
comfortable life. Personal values for the individual show that
most people wish to be ambitious, forgiving, responsible, and
honest. By demonstrating that you stand for similar ideals as
your audience, you help maintain a component of trust.

Once your audience has a built a foundation of trust and
respect, your message will seep in a lot more easily than if you
have little or no credibility. Keep in mind that you can’t
cruise through a presentation on credibility alone, but it will
certainly help your case by leaps and bounds

Dealing With A Dog Food Allergy?

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Just as humans allergies can show up as a sneeze or rash, your dog’s allergies can manifest as itchiness — or even ear infections. In fact, if your dog’s allergic to his food, it can cause him to scratch himself constantly, even with no obvious parasite problem.

Dog allergies rarely get solved with medicine, so the best we can do for our four-footed friends is focus on prevention. Providing the right type of food is essential to stopping your dog’s scratching habit.

Many people like to share their food with their dogs or let them help “clean up” the kitchen after a meal. Little do they know, their dogs just may not be able to take the tasty food we love so much, and some breeds (like the greyhound) are extremely sensitive. Even common foods like cheese, beef sausage and tuna may cause allergic reactions in some dogs. So it’s best to let dogs enjoy dog food and not human food, even though they clearly adore and want what we’re eating!

Narrowing Down the Problem

To determine the exact ingredients your dog is allergic to, try an elimination diet. Although powerful, it also requires patience. In fact, the elimination diet can call for eliminating specific food for up to 12 weeks before you’ll notice the effects. And if you still haven’t found the right (and wrong) ingredients, you’ll have to repeat the process all over again.

So is there an alternative to the lengthy elimination diet? Yes — give your dog a brand or type of food he’s never eaten before. But simply changing to a new brand of dog food might not be enough to eliminate his food allergies, since many brands contain similar ingredients. Instead, study the existing ingredients your dog is eating to determine which types of protein source he hasn’t been exposed to. Then, hunt for a dog food that doesn’t contain any of the ingredients you saw listed. For example, there are many brands of dog food that contains unusual protein sources such as rabbit or venison — great for testing allergic reactions to other, more common proteins.

Perhaps the best way for you to get control of dog’s allergies is to whip up your own dog food. That way, you’ll know exactly what he’s getting and what he isn’t — something that’s extremely hard to tell from reading the back of a dog food bag. Making your own food is especially helpful in elimination diets. To start, combine a portion of rice with baby food and lamb — so long as your dog isn’t already eating lamb and possibly displaying a reaction to it.

Dog food allergies are a special condition that can be frustrating and take patience to solve. Since allergic reactions don’t disappear overnight, you’ll need lots of time and thoughtfulness to help your dog overcome this problem — but his goofy smile and those scratch-free days ahead will probably make it all worth it.

Real Estate: Overcoming Your First Big Hurdle

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

As one journey’s through the jungle of real estate. You will find yourself amongst the company of those who share similar emotions: self-doubt, confusion, concerns of risk, and an endless stream of questions. So why would one subject him or herself to such things if it causes so much of a headache in the short term?

The answer to that is simple: Real Estate is where the money is! Seriously folks, no business on earth has made millionaires of more people than those two words.

OK so now you’ve decided it’s worth the risk, but you’ve heard so many different stories on results, methods, and a million different courses all claiming to be the silver bullet to launch your own career in real estate.

You may look into building new homes and then selling the properties when the timing is right, or even rent them out. Many people follow this method and simply rinse, lather, and repeat the process over and over till they reach their financial goals.

Others go about it a different way- such as finding a run down home (or building a new one) and then learn the tricks and trades of remodeling a home and finding out where the “pressure points” are that can drive the value of the property up like crazy. Then they’d flip or sell it once it is done.

Each method has it’s pros and cons. Perhaps you should look into the one that “feels right” to you, and look into it a bit more. It’s not possible to become a master of everything in the beginning so just find something, learn how to make money from it, and make it happen over and over again till you get your desired results.

Eventually, you will develop a nose for “where the money is”. This is something that can only be learned through hard work, and experience, period!

Split Shot Bass Sneak Attack

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

The Split shot rig is a finesse version of a fish finding rig along the lines of but not quite the Carolina Rig. Too many anglers dismiss this method as being too slow or a small fish method. The truth is that it is a deadly finesse method that can cover water as efficiently and as quickly as the Carolina rig. The split shot method also is a great way to catch limits of keeper sized bass. What tournament angler could dispute the success of that? Split shotting is a fairly shallow water finesse technique that works best in depths under 20 feet. It can be worked deeper but the sensitivity decreases as the depth increases. For anglers who aren’t confident in their worm fishing abilities, the split shot rig is actually nothing like traditional worm fishing.

This method is a cast and crank method that can be more easily compared to crank bait fishing than to worm fishing. The tiny 4inch curly tailed worms are in constant motion on the bottom so it might be even more effective than cranking because the bait stays in the strike zone longer. However simple this may sound, you can increase the effectiveness of the technique by “seining the bottom”. By this I mean using different casting angles and boat positioning to essentially saturate a grid or area. This way you can potentially present the bait to every fish within a determined area.

Not Just Another Carolina rig

The Split Shot may resemble a Carolina rig but it is different. To tie the rig you must eliminate the bullet sinker. Instead, you just crimp a piece of shot, two or three feet above the Texas rigged bait. I most often distance the shot about 18 to 24 inches above the bait. It is important to use only round shot without the tabs. The tabs will always catch on the weeds and foul the rig. Use size 2 or 4 shot. Make sure you don’t fray the line when you crimp the shot down on it. I prefer softer shot to prevent damaging the line. Water Gremlin, makers of weights and sinkers for fishing has introduced its Bull Shot. This is a bullet weight or conical shaped weight with a new twist. Like its famous squeezable split shot weights that crimp on to the line, Bull Shot weights have the same premise. Here you can place your bullet weight above the hook in any desired length. Just squeeze it on and it will stay in place. Gone are the days of multi knot rigs. It is a quick and easy way to rig up your soft plastics. This may be the best alternative if avoiding weeds and snags are your concern. The pointed shape comes through snags with ease and takes this rig to a new dimension.

This is a true finesse rig. Using this rig requires an angler to scale down his/her tackle. A four-inch bait is about the largest an angler should use. Employ a size 1/0 or size 1 Aberdeen style hook. Rig the bait on the seam. This along with the Aberdeen hook is a straight shank style and creates a keel to prevent the bait from rolling thus eliminating line twist. That is the key to the natural swimming motion of this bait. Fine diameter line and light spinning gear are necessary for this technique. I use a 6 or 6-6 foot ML spinning rod and 6lb test for this technique.

Employ the split shot rig when fishing in depths shallower than 20 feet. Any deeper and you’ll lose contact with the bait. The split shot retrieve is slow and steady. Maximum bottom contact is essential. You simply have to keep the weight in contact with the bottom. This technique is perfect for locating concentrations of bass. Especially when coordinated to cover a specific area from multiple angles. Because the bait is always in motion, wind won’t hamper its success. Wind can put a serious damper on regular worm fishing such as a Texas rig. The split shot rig is less affected by wind because you are constantly moving it.

Split shotting is deadly when fishing used water. If I’m fishing behind another boat, chances are that I am throwing a split shot rig to the water that has already been covered by that boat. The split shot method excels in heavily fished waters. That is the beauty of this method. One area in which this method excels is locating fish around uninteresting areas. Most anglers will beat visible cover or structure they see on their LCD’s to death. While you can catch fish in these places on split shot rigs, the rig may be better suited for use in boring areas without heavy cover. These boring areas are usually passed over by other anglers and they likely don’t receive any exploration because those anglers can’t see anything attractive to hold bass.

One particular day I was on an 85 acre pond that was hosting a bass tournament by a local B.A.S.S. chapter. The water was crowded with 15 or so boats and all of the water was used up. Immediately I rigged a split shot worm and I proceeded to catch a limit of decent bass. From what I heard, the participants didn’t fair as well. This proved to me how valuable an option this rig is. It took fish in water that was used by skilled anglers. This rig is a good choice when trying to locate fish on an unfamiliar lake. It is often the first tactic I’ll try on new waters. When a cold front is passing through the split shot may be the only bait that gets consistent attention from bass.

Anglers must learn to recognize the strike on a split shot rig. It differs from the telltale tap-tap of the Texas rig. The split shot bite tends to feel like a mushy sensation or the feeling of added pressure on the line. Bass do tend to hold onto the bait a bit longer than traditionally rigged worms. The lack of a sliding weight for a bass to feel in its mouth likely is the reason. This set up is just more natural. As with many of the techniques in this book, it might be best to learn what the rig feels like being retrieved unimpeded. Because you will be bumping of bottom with it, you may be in for a tough time recognizing strikes. Just remember that hook sets are free and if you feel anything out of the ordinary, swing on it. One caution with this rig, because you are using light line, try to sweep set the rod sharply to one side of your body. I utilize a set similar to the Slider sweep. You do not want to pop your line by setting too hard with the tiny line. Bass seem to hold on to the bait because of the weightless feeling coupled with the small amount of slack line between the split shot and the bait.

Hand poured worms along with standard grubs, reapers and lizards work well on a split shot rig. One of the best worms for this is the Curly Tail worm from Robo Worm. This is made specifically for the Shot techniques. This is a tiny 4 inch worm that features some wicked hand poured colors. It has a curly tail that is rigged tail down to offset any line twist by being inline with the keel that the Aberdeen hook creates. The worms are scented and salted and bass simply do not drop once they once them up. I’ve been using some of the new Cyberflexx baits that really float high off the bottom on this rig. They are very effective and this is a good way to seine the water. The floating bait opens up another dimension to the split shot rig. Now you can cover water above the bottom. This is helpful when fish are suspending a few feet off the bottom.

Anytime is Split Shot time

An angler should recognize the best times to use this method. I use it as a fish finding tool on unfamiliar waters. If you put an easy meal in front of any bass, it is going to tell you something every time. Obviously, if you are simply patterning fish incorrectly, the rig may not be of use to you. If you use it where they live, it will draw a reaction and usually quickly at that. I initially target, sloping primary and secondary points with the rig. From there, I move to small shallow humps, sand bars and depressions, flats and sandy bottom areas. Perhaps one of the best places to utilize the split shot rig is on bare or nothing banks. These areas visually don’t look as sweet as say a submerged log jam or weed bed. For this reason, they are often overlooked and passed by most target fishing anglers. The truth of the matter is that bass will be in these areas and often it is because the bottom offers something that the target angler doesn’t even know is there. The rig also works well when pulled over shallow flats, sloping points, sandy banks, boat launch ramps and sandbars. Try it in non-traditional fishing spots. Locate bass’ daily migration routes and try this rig. Many times when fish are spooky, traditional baits won’t raise a strike, the split shot rig may be just the ticket to catching a bass with lockjaw. Target spots that other fishermen ignore; bare banks, swimming areas and shallow sandy flats are among the choicest of areas.
