Business Networking Tip Number 239: Wear A Name Tag

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

A few years ago I attended a business networking function through my local chapter of BNI (Business Networking International). Upon entering the room there was a desk with tags that you can write your name on and wear. It wasn’t mandatory and not everybody did it. But I did. I wrote my name, Tino Buntic, and my occupation, Home & Auto Insurance Broker. I wanted everybody I would meet to know who I was and what I did.

This name tag worked unexpected wonders. As I walked around and mingled I had people approach me. They would call me by name and say things like “Tino, you’re an insurance broker? What a coincidence; my auto insurance policy is coming up for renewal and I was about to search for quotes. I want a better rate than what I’m paying now.” I must have done at least ten quotes just for people that approached me that night. Not only that, I also was approached by a used car salesman that wanted to network with me because he needed a reliable insurance broker to refer his clients to. I ended up doing business with this gentleman for the following two years after that, until he moved to another state. During those two years he had referred dozens and dozens of clients to me. That one contact provided me with many closed sales that I otherwise would not have had.

I’ve attended a few business networking functions prior to this night but none were as successful. The reason being is that I had never bothered to wear a name tag. I had to approach people myself to start conversations and hand out business cards. It is easier to have people approach you than it is for you to approach others.

Wearing a name tag at business networking events works; it will allow you to gain more contacts and referrals. You should always wear one. Bring your own in case they do not provide them at the event. Not only that, you should also wear name tags at trade shows for the exact same reasons.

Tino Buntic created http://www.trade-pals.com, a different type of business networking website. It is a directory of business professionals, entrepreneurs, freelancers, and salespeople. It provides free B2B and B2C sales leads without cold calling.

Enhancing Your Brain As You Age

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

“The juvenile sea squirt wanders through the sea searching for a
suitable rock or hunk of coral to cling to and make its home for
life. For this task, it has a rudimentary nervous system. When
it finds its spot and takes root, it doesn’t need its brain any
more so it eats it! It’s rather like getting tenure.” ~David
Dennett, “Consciousness Explained”

And true to form, I have a client who’s a tenured college
professor, head of the department, who is “going out of his
mind.” He came to me for coaching because he’s deeply
dissatisfied with his life, and wants to change careers.

Without violating confidentiality, I can say this client is
desperate for new experiences, for meaning and purpose, and for
something new in his life. He is “hamstrung” by a high salary
and a less-than-30-hour week with long vacations, but is
beginning to see the “price” is not worth it.

Though this gentleman happens to actually be a tenured
professor, he is representative of many clients I have who are
50 or older.

As more Baby Boomers “come of age,” the studies about aging
continue to pump in lots of new information to counteract former
stereotypes. Science is discovering that “old” rats given new
toys and new playmates start growing new brain cells, and better
brain cells. Imagine!

And, poignantly, this is what the professor laments the most –
the fact that he isn’t encouraged, or allowed, to innovate
within the department; and that there’s no camaraderie.

Let’s take a look at some myths about aging and the brain, to
encourage you to keep learning, and to keep acquiring new toys,
and new playmates. And, oh yes, get toys that give you a good
workout, both physically and mentally. That’s one of the keys to
resilience as you age!

MYTH No. 1: Once you’re born, all you can look forward to is a
long and steady loss of brain cells (aka neurons).

REALITY: “Stem” cells in the human brain can create new neurons
indefinitely, and relatively idle neurons will extend their
branches to carry signals to and from other neurons
indefinitely, under the proper circumstances.

MYTH No. 2: We can’t get smarter as we age.

REALITY: Mice (are we like mice … you be the judge) in an
enriched environment, with interesting toys and playmates,
showed an increase in 4000 new neurons in the hippocampus
(crucial to memory and learning) compared to 2400 in the control
group with no toys or playmates. And older mice’s brains also
got bigger and better! And quickly! (Diamond and Rosenzweig,
Elizabeth Gould, Princeton)

MYTH No. 3: Creativity diminishes with age.

REALITY: According to Ralph Warner, author of “Get a Life: You
Don’t Need a million to Retire Well,” “older artists often do
well, commonly experiencing a sustained burst of exciting
creativity after 65.”

MYTH No. 4: There isn’t much you can do to avoid Alzheimer’s.

REALITY: According to David Snowden, Ph.D., “Aging with Grace,”
hardworking brains (the ones that get used in learning new
things all during life) do well because their stimulated cells
branch frequently, resulting in millions of new connections
(synapses) so the brain actually becomes larger and…evidence
continues to accumulate that a larger brain can cope with the
effects of brain diseases, like Alzheimer’s and strokes.
Theoretically because a larger brain has more active tissue, and
therefore a greater number of ways to work around diseased or
damaged areas.

MYTH No. 5: What you’ve got, is all you’ll ever get.

REALITY: According to Paul Tallal, Rutgers University
neuroscientist, “You create your brain from the input you get.”
By this, she means intellectual stimulation strengths the brain
because in the normal course of living, our brains constantly
reorganize themselves, which is called “neuroplasticity.” And
neuroplasticity speeds up with the amount and complexity of the
new information our brains receive.

MYTH No. 6: As you age, it’s too hard to learn new things, so
stick with what you already know.

REALITY: According to Arnold Scheibel, head of UCLA’s Brain
Research Institute, the brain’s axons and dendrites (which send
and receive messages) grow fastest with new material. “The
important thing is to be actively involved in areas unfamiliar
to you,” say Golden and Tsiaras, in “Building a Better Brain.”
“Anything that is intellectually challenging can probably serve
as a kind of stimulus for dendritic growth, which means it adds
to the computational reserves in your brain.” Sounds to me like
building new hard drive, yes?

MYTH No. 7: Watching the Discovery Channel suffices for
stimulation.

REALITY: Dr. Robert Friedland reports that adults over age 70
with brain-stimulating hobbies were two and a half times less
likely to suffer from the effects of Alzheimer’s later in life
than were those whose main leisure activity was watching TV.

MYTH No. 8: In order to stimulate and grow the brain, you must
engage in formal schooling.

REALITY: According to Warner, traditional academic subjects
aren’t the only answer. The key is to find something both new
and challenging to you. “Thus a Latin professor,” writes Warner,
“might do better to learn how to prune fruit trees, line her
car’s brakes or even solve difficult jigsaw puzzles than to
write a scholarly essay parsing Cicero’s rhetoric.”

MYTH No. 9: I can ignore it for a while and it will still be
there when I get back.

REALITY: Not! According to neurologist Oliver Sacks, the brain
uses a lot of energy and blood, something we can’t “afford” to
no purpose. If neurons dedicated to perform a given skill are
not being used, they’ll either atrophy or be co-opted to some
other function.

Myth No. 10: Intellectual stimulation is enough.

REALITY: According to Marion Diamond, aerobic exercise, such as
swimming and jogging, may be especially beneficial to brain
function in aging people, because it tends to keep blood vessels
in better shape. And according to the Salk Institute study, mice
that exercised regularly on a running wheel grew twice as many
new brain cells (again, in the hippocampus) as other mice.

So there you have it! Jog on out for those new toys and new
playmates and get a better brain and a better life! And it’s
never too late unless you don’t start now.

Pumpkin – A Super Food!

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Think of the word pumpkin and images of jack-o-lanterns and whipped cream covered Thanksgiving pies will probably pop into your mind. Pumpkin is traditionally considered a holiday food and is a staple in our kitchen pantries and freezers during that festive time of the year. However, did you know that pumpkin now heralded as one of the ‘Super Foods?’

According to Dr. Steven Pratt, author of SuperFoods Rx: Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life, “Well, pumpkin is one of the most nutritionally valuable foods known to man. Moreover, it’s inexpensive, available year round in canned form, incredibly easy to incorporate into recipes, high in fiber, low in calories, and packs an abundance of disease fighting nutrients.”

What exactly makes pumpkin so super? The powerful antioxidants known as carotenoids give this food its super status. Carotenoids have the ability to ward off the risk of various types of cancer and heart disease, along with, cataracts and macular degeneration. Dr. Pratt mentions many other disease fighting super foods in his book as well, but we are most interested in pumpkin because of the year-round availability and ease of use in canned form.

Treadmills vs Elliptical Trainers - Which Gives a Better Workout!

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

In today’s world of fitness crazes and new-fangled exercise tools, many fads come and go. For example, how many people are working out daily with a Thigh Master. But, occasionally, an idea is hit upon that really works! An exercise machine is created that actually does what it says it will do. It promotes fitness and wellness. It helps both novice and fitness enthusiasts reach their exercise goals. It has ’staying’ power!

Two of the most popular fitness machines used today are the treadmill and the elliptical trainer. What makes these machines so popular? Why are they favored over other exercise devices?

The treadmill has been around for over a decade and remains popular among novice and seasoned athletes. The reason for its popularity is it is appealing to walkers and runners and it is a relatively simple machine. Anyone can walk, there are no special skills involved.

A newer exercise machine, the elliptical, is gaining on the treadmill in its popularity ranking. It offers the benefit of a total body workout without the impact.

How do treadmills compare with elliptical training equipment? What benefits do each machine offer? Could one of these be right for you?

Elliptical Trainers

Elliptical trainers are relatively new to the fitness equipment industry. They have increased in popularity during the last few years. And rate of growth is surpassing that of treadmills. But, do they deliver what they promise?

Elliptical trainers allow the athlete to burn a similar number of calories as jogging…but without the risk of injury to the back, knees, hips, or ankles. Your feet never leave the pedals. As a result, this type of machine is quite low-impact and goes easy on the joints. In fact, whereas exercising on a treadmill requires your body to absorb the impact force of walking or running, exercising on an elliptical can be compared to running in midair. Running can result in 2.5x your body weight impacting a treadmill.

Because ellipticals are so low-impact and easy on the joints, this type of exercise equipment may very well be one of the best choices for older people or for individuals who are recovering from a joint injury. That may be why it is so popular with us baby boomers, whose joints have taken such a beating over the years.

Elliptical machines mimic the normal elliptical motion of the foot, the extension of the leg, and the rotation of the hip during walking or running. This motion uses all the leg muscles, giving you a total lower-body workout.

But, WAIT! There’s more! Elliptical motion machines ALSO simultaneously work the upper body (unlike the treadmill, which works only the lower body)! As the feet go through their elliptical motion, the hands grip the moving handlebars, exercising the arms. The movement of the dual handlebars mimics cross-country skiing. Now, this particular type of workout may not necessarily pump you up to look like a bodybuilder. However, because you are including the upper 30% of your body in your workouts, the results will be more efficient. (And, those arms will be toned in no time!)

Because elliptical trainers DO work the upper and lower body simultaneously, the heart rate climbs more quickly. Thus, less time is required to achieve more results. The amount of energy expended is optimized. As the legs are being worked, the back, shoulders, chest, biceps, and triceps are also working…making it possible to burn more calories in less time. (An optimal workout need only be about 20-30 minutes long.)

The foot pedals can be worked in a forward or reverse direction. When you change the direction of the pedals, you’ll target your lower body in different ways. It is nice to be able to add versatility to your elliptical workouts, and such a change works to ensure optimal training of the leg muscles.

The intensity level can be adjusted on elliptical equipment to fit your personal level of fitness. Resistance may be added as desired to increase the workload on your legs throughout the forward or backward stride. With such an efficient workout, you can say ‘goodbye’ to flabby thighs and derrieres!

Previous studies have shown that working out on an elliptical unit can trick the body into believing it is working easier than it actually is. Therefore, as you’re burning more calories in less time on an elliptical trainer, your body feels as though it doesn’t have to work as hard to achieve its goals. This phenomenon is known as the “Rate of Perceived Exertion.”
Additional benefits of elliptical training include its ability to build bone density and to inhibit the onset of osteoporosis.

Everyone needs strong, healthy bones. This is especially a concern as we grow older, and our body’s bone mass begins to deteriorate. Elliptical exercise can inhibit bone deterioration and actually improve bone thickness.

An elliptical device is safe to use (i.e. it stops when you stop). It uses very little electricity and is economical to operate. Because of its lesser impact, there is less wear and tear of the machine, making maintenance quite low. It has a small footprint, so it takes up less floor space than other fitness equipment. And, as with the treadmill, it allows you to exercise in a controlled environment for more comfort and convenience.

With all the benefits and the practicality of elliptical training machines, they just might end up exceeding the treadmill in popularity! For more information on elliptical trainers go to Elliptical Trainers Ratings and Reviews.

Treadmills

Treadmills are the most popular fitness equipment. They are simple to use and provide an excellent cardiovascular workout. Treadmills allow you to walk, jog or run, they also can simulate hill climbing.

The two most popular forms of exercising are running and walking. Whether you are a casual walker or a serious runner, a treadmill can accommodate your exercise needs. Set the speed and incline to suite your desired cardiovascular goals. You can do a power walk up an incline or a heart pumping run at high speed.

Most power treadmills offer a number of pre-set programs and intensity levels from which to choose. On these particular machines, you may program in your personal information (i.e. age, weight, height, fitness level, etc.). Then, you may choose a pre-set program (such as ‘killer hill’ or ‘weight-loss’), and the unit will automatically adjust the workout to fit your specifications.

If you’d rather manually begin treadmilling, you can bypass the pre-set programs and adjust the incline, speed, and the time yourself. And, even if you’ve chosen a pre-set program, you have the option of changing the incline level or speed level at any time.

Running on a treadmill with a nicely cushioned running surface provides less impact on the knees, shins, ankles, back, and joints than does running on pavement or on a track or trail. As a result, the runner who uses a treadmill is less likely to sustain a running injury than a runner who runs upon a harder surface. (Nonetheless, a runner’s body will still experience impact when the foot lands on the belt.)

Outdoors, you could possibly trip over a rock or twist your ankle in an unseen hole in the ground. You don’t have to worry about unseen road or trail hazards when exercising on a treadmill. You need only maintain your rhythm on the moving belt.

And the Winner Is!

So which is better, a treadmill or elliptical trainer. Both give an excellent cardio workout and when used regularly will burn unwanted calories.

For a walking or running devotee, the treadmill is the machine of choice. Even if you prefer the great outdoors, the treadmill allows you to continue your favorite sport all year long and in the most inclement weather. A treadmill will reduce injuries since you workout on a flat surface that is cushioned. It can add variety to your workout through various challenging programs. And with heart rate control you can optimize your exercising by allowing your heart rate to control the level of exertion.

The appeal of an elliptical is the combined upper and lower body workout, and the low-impact. You exercise more muscle groups, while avoiding the kind of impact that can result in injuries. For those of us whose knees or ankles just can’t take it any longer, the elliptical trainer is the obvious choice.

So which one do you choose? Depending upon your preference and needs either can be an excellent choice.

SEO #4: Off-page Optimization

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Yesterday you should have read the third course out of 6 courses that will help you get a TOP rank in the search engines and get EXPLOSIVE LASER TARGETED TRAFFIC for Free. Today we move on to course #4 and study off-page Optimization. Please read today’s course very carefully and take some time to test what I’m about to tell you on your own webpage. Alright let’s start!

Off-page Optimization

Unfortunately optimizing your WebPages is not enough; the search engines have developed a “system” where the ranking of a website is determined by its “Link Popularity”. This system was first developed by Google and now many other search engines like yahoo search and msn are doing the same. So to get a top page ranking you must get as many websites linking to you as possible. Before I tell you how to increase your link popularity I have to tell you about the other major factors in off-page optimization.

1) Anchor Text: This is the text that is hyperlinked to send people to your website. Anchor text MUST contain a few of your main keywords because google uses it to determine your websites relevance to a particular topic.

2) The website that links to you: If the website that links to you is related to your site then that’s a huge bonus to you. So look for websites that are related to your website’s topic.

You now know that it’s vital that you use an anchor text that includes your main keywords. For example if you remember from day2, the title that I chose was “Yo Mama Joke | Blonde Joke Online”. Now a good anchor text that can include my main keywords would be that title! You also should know that in order to get a good ranking you must seek out websites that are closely related to your own website and get them to link to you.

To get your website on “its feet” you can start by submitting your website to popular directories. These directories are free but you can always pay for a guaranteed placement ($$). Now I have here some links that should be more than enough to get you started.

http://info.vilesilencer.com/main.php?rock=seo-friendly.php
This website has links to hundreds of Search engine friendly free directories that you can add you link to. Beside each directory you can see the PR, this is very useful.

http://www.dmoz.org/ (PR 9!) YOU MUST submit your site to the Open Directory Project.

http://www.zeal.com (PR 8!) YOU MUST submit your site to Zeal, by being in their directory you will be indexed by LookSmart.

Now the next step is to look for link partners. I can’t stress this enough, you have to find partners with websites related to your own website. What I have here are four link-exchange directories that you can sign up to and start exchanging links with people. These are great and will get you hundreds of sites that may link to you. I suggest you install a link directory script on your website and add all the websites that you want to exchange links with. After adding their link just send them an email and approach them professionally. You can use an email like this:
