Taking PreCautions: Lessons on Protection Strategies for the 21st Century from Genuine Bussey Sty

Filed under: Gender Issues Info — admin @ 2:31 pm

“What is defense? It is a countermeasure to aggression, an act
of protection from danger”. -Robert Anthony Bussey

More than ever, women are afraid for their safety and are taking
measures to conquer their fears against the mounting problem of
abuse and hostile threat. For over a quarter of a century, I’ve
had the privilege of helping thousands of women to feel
empowered by learning personal protection skills. In that time,
I’ve been exposed to countless first hand accounts of some very
emotional stories of violence, distress, rape, and life
threatening survival. To look into the eyes of a person who’s
been victimized reminds me all too well of the awesome
responsibility that every expert has to share only those methods
that could guide an individual from a potentially brutal
situation to a place of physical and emotional safety. To feel
prepared and safe requires some work.

For females especially, training should encompass more than
vital combat strategies, to include danger awareness skills and
a devotion to safeguards. I am a strong advocate of programming
the kinds of responses that deflect any possibility of physical
contact. This is the best way to prevent injury and the most
important skill a person can learn to remain free from harm.
There are just too many dangers and variables in combat.
“PreCautions”, a Genuine Bussey Style protection program for
women was titled as such because its name reflects my
determination to limit the arena of hands-on conflict. Of
course, we all know that there are no guarantees that violence
won’t occur; therefore, protective tools must be in place. These
tools need to be effective, direct, and immediately useful or
the victim runs the risk of making things worse by trying to
defend herself with techniques that won’t hold up. In its truest
form, fighting is not secret, nor particularly complex.

I would like to share some thoughts, which come from our
“Principals of Protection Intelligence for Women”. When I
formulated them, I asked myself what was really important for
ladies to know before introducing them to actual defensive
tactics. What would I say to my daughter or loved one about
building a foundation that made sense and was easy to apply and
remember? These are a few of them:

Violent crime is everywhere, happening every minute. It’s
random, and it can happen to you. The world is a violent
shelling that can change life in an instant. Believe it.

Danger recognition skills help to reduce vulnerability. You can
expect to prevent some threats by listening closely to your gut
instincts and increasing your awareness of danger. With
practice, these instincts will get better and better, helping
you perceive and define danger. We’ve all had a ‘gut feeling’
about a certain person or situation. The way to sharpen this
into a tool of defense is to acknowledge it as a helpful message
and to realize that whatever emotions you may be feeling could
be there for a reason. Without always assuming the worst or
jumping to conclusions, we need to take as much time as the
situation will allow to “observe” and “clarify” what is really
going on. This will offer you an opportunity to guide your next
move.

There is an invisible line that separates your fight or flight
response. When faced with a life threatening encounter, this
will be activated naturally in order to insure your survival. At
the critical moment when the assailant crosses that line, you
will need to commit to making split decisions. The choice to
fight back may be inevitable. At that point, you must fight with
everything you have to break any control the assailant has over
you, then escape. The key to feeling better about your chances
to pull this off is to prepare yourself physically and adopt
simple yet powerful skills. Strikes such as the palm strike,
elbow, and knee are common to martial arts and self-defense.
However, in order to best perform these skills, you need to
utilize what I call “hidden motion”, that is, to hide behind
every strike, block, and motion. This will help shield you from
flailing strikes that can occur simultaneously when it’s them
against you.

Making the choice to either fight back or to run away can feel
risky to you. You may feel afraid to try either one. However,
the consequences of doing nothing are serious indeed. Fear will
exist in extreme situations and can limit your capabilities
unless you incorporate it into a mind-set that allows you to
exceed its paralyzing force. Do not let fear or panic control
you. Instead, let your fear and adrenaline motivate action.

The best timing you can have is when the opponent doesn’t see it
coming. Surprise attacks instill fear and confusion. If your
assailant takes you by surprise, remain as calm as possible and
take a quick assessment of the facts. This may require that you
be thinking one thing and physically performing another.

Mistakes are inevitable because combat is continuous and
ongoing. Fighting is not static or choreographed. Surviving an
encounter often requires adaptability. So, prepare your mind and
body to act, using whatever it takes, for however long it takes,
to remain alive. If something isn’t working, move on. Ride out
any unsuccessful maneuvers without seizing up or panicking.

You cannot always control your surroundings or what is happening
to you, so you must control your actions. Guide yourself through
the crisis by going with the current as opposed to fighting it,
until you can reach the shore. Sometimes, you can expect this
process to be painful. Tell yourself ahead of time that, no
matter how badly it might hurt, that you will never, never give
up. This endurance mindset can save your life. To survive is not
a matter of conquering, but of enduring. It is to outlast a
given situation. In a word, persevere!

Serious conflict has a way of releasing in you a heightened
sense of awareness. Yet it is possible that your energy may
become misdirected and lead to a failed performance. By keeping
energy in reserve (what I call the 90% Rule), you can maintain
this heightened state and remain alert so that opportunities are
not overlooked. If you strike a pad with 100% of your energy,
then hit it again using only 90%, it would be very hard to tell
the difference. In fact, a 90% energy strike is often more
relaxed, powerful, and quick. Marshal your resources or no
matter how skilled, you’ll be defeated due to lack. Conflict,
like many things in this world, contains a unique rhythm.
Experts that find rhythm can pace themselves without haste and
miscalculation.

Life itself is simplified in dangerous circumstances making
less, enough. Anyone who has experienced and survived a
life-threatening event can tell you what is really important in
this world. If you can envision for a moment, what it must be
like to be close to the edge of life and death, it is easy to
see how ones priorities can change. The survivor is keenly aware
of the possibility of a traumatic attack and the need to take
precautions. In the end, every effort you make to discipline
your physical and emotional reflexes will help to hone your
intuition and keep you whole.

Golf is Not a Game

Filed under: School of Sports — admin @ 2:01 pm

Now that summer is upon us and the fairways are relatively dry a lot of us are thinking about optimisong the distance we can drive the ball from the tee.

We’re looking for lower scores, so we’ve got to have the right set up when we stand on the tee to use our weight ptoperly.

So, put a stick or something,on the ground, inside your right foot, and when you reach the top of the backswing, your chest should be over that stick.

You must have a full turn and ensure that your weight goes towards the flag when you hit the ball. The unwinding of the body creates the energy that makes the arms move. So, its the body, not the arms that generates the power that gives longer distance drives.

Drawing the Ball.

Drawing the ball will find you extra distance, but there aren’t too many golfers who know how to do this properly, yet there are many articles written about it.

Simply put, it requires a swingpath that is in to out. This is the important bit - it means taking your normal stance, then moving your right foot back, so that the toes of the right foot are just about level with the heel of the lefy foot. Why? Because this ensures that the hands stay behind the body on the downswing. Go on, do it because practice makes perfect and don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t happen the first time you try it!.

Fading the Ball.

However, if you want to fade the ball - NO, I don’t meanslice, we’re all very good at that! - the converse is true.
What you must do is open up your normal stance so that feet, hips and shoulders all aim left of whatever your target is. It may be that you’re trying to negotiate a bend in the fairway to give you a better shot at the green, or the flag is in a precarious position from where you are so you need a high,soft-landing shot. A fade is your answer. But just don’t overdo the ‘left of target’ aim or it will all end in tears!

This leads on to the sometimes need to get a small amount of backspin to what could be called a ‘checking chip’. Here, you’ve got to move the ball back in the stance and give it a shorter, but faster swing.. This will mean your hands will be ahead of the ball and so its going to be a low flight. So long as you strike properly you’ll get enought backspin to check the chip.

Bunkers.

These have always been the scariest thing on a golf course to the amateur golfer. We all know how easy the professionals make these shots look, and so with a little practice ( theres that word again) bunker shots can becoame an “everyday, run of the mill” shot.
For an ordinary or normal greenside bunker shot, your feet should aim left of the target. Open up the club face and play the shot across the ball and this will give a soft landing. The only time bunker shots become difficult is when the ball is under the lip of the bunker. Poached egg shots aren’t difficult, but thats the subject of another article.

So, you’ve arrived on the putting surface and a strong pointer to great putting is to remember that the putter sing plane is NOT straight back and trhough, but slightly INSIDE to straight through, and if you remember this one little gem when practicing, your scores will reflect how much better your putting is.

Happy Golfing and God Bless.

Fresh Pumpkin Recipes: 5 Great Ways to Use Fresh Pumpkin

Filed under: Eating — admin @ 1:39 pm

It’s autumn, and veggie shops are overflowing with beautiful golden pumpkins. Pumpkin is a highly nutritious vegetable, rich in antioxidants, fiber and vitamins, so it’s a great way to add goodness to fall menus.

You can substitute canned pumpkin in any recipe using pumpkin puree, but you’ll get a better flavour if you cook fresh pumpkin yourself. For the best flavour, slice and seed fresh pumpkin and roast in a medium oven for 30-40 minutes until tender. When cool enough to handle, remove skin and mash or blend the flesh. Alternatively, peel and seed raw pumpkin, cut into chunks, place in a large pan with the minimum of water and simmer until tender. Drain thoroughly and mash, blend or process to a puree.

Here are 5 ideas for using fresh pumpkin.

  1. Pumpkin soup Pumpkin makes wonderful soup. Cook cubes of fresh pumpkin in vegetable stock, adding other vegetables such as onion, leek, potato, carrot or turnip if you wish. When the vegetables are tender, puree in a blender or food processor. For extra savour, add spices like cinnamon or nutmeg. Ground or grated fresh ginger also work well.

  2. Pumpkin cakes Add up to 175ml (1 cup) pureed pumpkin to teabread recipes, for moistness. Always use spice with pumpkin, because its natural flavour is very mild. Traditional choice is a mix of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and allspice.

  3. Pumpkin pies Thanksgiving wouldn’t be complete without a pumpkin pie. The simplest way to make one is to use bake a pastry case or pie crust (or buy a good quality ready-made one). For enough filling for two 9-inch (20cm) pie crusts, mix 450 ml (2 ½ cups) pumpkin puree, fresh or canned, with 5 fl oz low-fat evaporated milk, three beaten eggs and 1 ½ tsp cinnamon, ¾ tsp ginger, ¼ tsp each nutmeg and allspice (but check before adding spices, as some canned pumpkin comes ready-spiced). Bake for 15 mins at 425F/220C/gas 7, lower the temperature to 350F/180C/gas 4 for another 40 minutes.

  4. Pumpkin pancakes Great for breakfast, these are whizzed up in minutes. Substitute 90ml (1/2 cup) pumpkin puree for the same quantity of milk in your favourite pancake recipe and cook in a hot pan, pouring just enough batter to make small pancakes.

  5. Pumpkin in savoury dishes Try cubed pumpkin, browned with onion and garlic, then simmered in a tomato sauce with a dash of chilli. Great with pasta or rice. Or use pumpkin in risotto. Finely chop and soften 4 shallots or one onion in a little olive oil. Stir in 250g ( 1 ½ cups) risotto rice, 500g (3 cups) grated fresh pumpkin (use a food processor to do the grating), then gradually add 850ml (5 cups) hot vegetable stock, making sure each addition has been absorbed into the rice before you add the next. When rice and pumpkin are tender, stir through a generous grating of Parmesan cheese, and leave to stand, covered for 10 minutes to allow the rice to swell.

Pumpkin is only in season for a couple of months, so make the most of it this year in these fresh pumpkin recipes.

Another Mobile Phone Non-Reality Show

Filed under: Great Hardware Tips — admin @ 1:28 pm

More than we want to admit it, perception is everything. After weeks of negative statements regarding an issue, the President’s ratings plummet. The President then hits the road with a PR campaign and his ratings go back up. What changed? Did the facts of the matter change or did perception just change in that short period?

You see it all the time in politics. You see it with celebrities. Why do celebrities care so much when a seemingly false accusation is leveled? Why not just blow it off? Because they know that a huge percentage of people believe what they are told, no matter if it doesn’t seem true or reasonable.

With their huge advertising and PR budgets, major carriers have the ability to change the perception of reality in millions of consumers’ minds.

I wonder why in reality my two prepaid cell phones are saving me over $25 per month over my previous contract phones. I rarely hear stories such as mine.

What I do hear is that prepaid is suitable for low use consumers, credit challenged, or young people. I hear that inexpensive, cool cell phones are not available for those interested in going prepaid, when they are. I even hear people who complain that they have to pay when they use their prepaid plan, when with their $39.99 monthly contract plan they received free minutes. Excuse me people, but you are paying for those “free” minutes in your monthly rate! Someone told me he was spending about $25.00 per month on his prepaid plan, but wasn’t getting any “free” minutes. He didn’t comprehend that he was talking the same amount of minutes for $15 less per month than his previous contract. Man, these mobile phone companies are good. They get people to spend more for less and accept it.

Do yourself a favor. Ignore the messages sent out by the major carriers. Ignore the free phone offers for phones that are never free. Buy yourself a nice prepaid phone from a reputable prepaid company like Cingular, STi Mobile, T-Mobile, Tracfone or Boost Mobile. You will be happy. If not, there is no contract to cancel, so just choose another prepaid company and have a nice day.

With that being said, it does look like prepaid mobile is just starting to gain the attention and maybe respect of the major mobile carriers. It is about time.

Your Accountant Will Agree: Leasing a Car For Your Business is the Way To Go

Filed under: Finance Matters — admin @ 12:15 pm

One of the many important financial decisions of a business owner is whether to lease or purchase motor vehicles for the business. RK Auto Group recommends leasing for several reasons: Leasing strengthens your financial statement and upgrades your company’s image by providing sharper-looking vehicles at a cheaper price.

Most accountants agree: your financial statement looks rosier with vehicle leasing.
Financial benefits of leasing include:

  • A better tax write off - you can deduct actual payments instead of using a depreciation schedule
  • Clearer bookkeeping - while a lease is simply an expense on the financial statement, a purchase is an asset and a liability
  • More borrowing power – with a lease, you can keep lines of credit open for other expenditures; a purchase of a vehicle ties up those loan options
  • Preventing negative equity - this happens when you purchase a car: sometimes the market conditions make the vehicle worth less than the debt owed on it
  • When you don’t have negative equity you have less to negotiate in leases

Leasing improve your company’s image as well as its bottom line.
When you lease a vehicle, you don’t pay for all of it. You only pay for the part of the vehicle you use. This means:

  • A lower monthly payment
  • You can afford a more expensive vehicle to better represent your business (and it’s more fun to drive!)
  • You drive a new vehicle more often: a 48-month lease costs the same monthly amount as a 60-month purchase of the same vehicle!

Make sure to lease from a reputable dealer for consistent, high-quality service.
When you lease a vehicle, you form a strong relationship with the leasing representative, because you work with the same person on every lease. Leasing provides a satisfying experience as well as great financial benefits to your company.

There are only THREE ways to earn money in this world!! 1. Get a
job. 2. Start a business, or 3. Put your money to work! All
right, omit the job. If you wanted one of those we wouldn’t be
wasting our time so let’s go to the next choice. Ask yourself,
do you have the leadership ability? Can you handle pressure and
responsibilities? Can you protect yourself from litigations? Can
you commit to the long extra hours? Do you have the knowledge,
and the financial backing to run a business? Are you able to
accept the fact that a large majority of all new businesses
fail? Now let’s look at being an investor for a minute.
According to Einstein, “COMPOUNDING IS THE GREATEST FORCE IN THE
UNIVERSE” and he called it the 8th wonder of the world. Have you
ever used the power of compounding with money? Once you fully
understand the concept, your outlook on life will change
instantly! You will want to compound every dollar, yen, franc,
pound, etc that you can get your hands on.

Before reviewing the recommended enclosed programs, let’s look
at an example of a monthly compounding investment. Let’s assume
that you invest $100 each and every month. After a period of one
year, you can draw $1,455 per month for as long as you keep
investing $100 per month. You can double that monthly income by
investing $200, or triple that monthly income with $300 and so
on. If that doesn’t exite you, I really don’t think I can help
you. However, if this interests you, you will find this
investment offer when you click “InvestPlace Private Fund”
within “PROGRAM 1″ enclosed below. Here are some “SELECT”
programs which I participate in. You can take advantage of the
time and money I invested before arriving at these final
selections, The choice is now yours. Isn’t it a wonderful thing
when I can say that I will continue making tons of money no
matter what you decide to do. The reason is, I do not need to
sell, work, promote, recommend, convince, advertise, recruit,
sponsor, talk, commute, move, have a boss, make payroll, pay
company bills, or get out of my shorts UNLESS I FEEL LIKE IT!
