Authentic or Fake?

Filed under: Bids — admin @ 10:20 pm

1. Admit It: Old business models are no longer working. The Internet is bringing us closer as geographical boundaries, language barriers and cultural differences melt right before our eyes. Is is authentic? Is it fake?? What is Real? HMMM…Is the real question defining reality… ?

2. Get the Facts: According to USA Today “Ebay has become a mirror of our times. More than 125 million people use it; $1,060 worth of products flow through it every second. Among the top 10 search terms on eBay in 2003 were four designer brands: Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Coach and Prada. Which designer brand will win 2005? A simple search on eBay will give you the real time information, pricing and style numbers. This information is free for offline and online retailers. If you plan on buying from the licensed wholesale distributor at regular wholesale prices better make sure your prices are competitive with eBay retailers selling Below wholesale.

3. Think Global: If you think eBay is big, this is only the tip of the iceberg. The Embassy of India recently announced “eBay, the World’s Online Marketplace (NASDAQ: EBAY - www.ebay.com) has agreed to acquire Baazee.com Inc. and its subsidiary Baazee.com India Pvt. Ltd., the largest online marketplace in India. The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of calendar year 2004. There are currently 17 million Internet users in India, and the number is expected to grow to more than 30 million users in 2006.” India Folio

4. Process and Plan: Once you have read the facts, process the facts. How will rapid globalization affect Your business? If Ma and Pa Kettle are surfing the internet while watching TV and ordering from India delivered for 1/2 price, where is your business going? Overtaken by this huge evolution of Internet communication, eBay has washed it’s hands of policing counterfeits by instituting a inside Vero Team of registered trademark owners who have been given Carte Blanche to pull auctions suspected of selling goods that are infringing on copyrights.. is it legal? is it working?? A quick search on eBay for the words “Tiffany jewelry” January 14, 2005 produced thousands of results for items offered at below wholesale prices Search eBay . Search results for the words “Von Dutch”, Tommy Hilifiger, Abercrombie, produces similar results.

Is Vero losing the battle to protect trademarks and copyrights or is Vero accepting the new pricing mechanism that is the result of the globalization brought on by the fastest growing internet company in the world? Mixed messages from Vero/Ebay regarding their policy is resulting in legal battles. Are Grey Market goods legal? Ebay Powersellers say yes and are fighting back and many are winning Read Taberone’s Case - Grey Market Goods Tiffany says it is Not legal and the courts agreed that eBay should be taking stronger measures to protect trademark owners. Tiffany/eBay - MSNBC Report Von Dutch is handling the situation a little differently by posting a black list of companies on it’s eBay About Me page. “If you bought products from one of these websites, YOU BOUGHT COUNTERFEIT GOODS.” Some companies listed are coming forward claiming the statement is not true and invoices will prove it. Containers of brand name goods are entering the USA faster than ever as manufacturers and factories worldwide see new opportunities.

5. Get on Board! Whatever you decide to do - make sure you take a close look at the tremendous opportunity ahead. Celent Communications anticipates the online payment industry in the US will grow significantly over the next few years, rising to $12.5 billion in revenues by 2005. Outstanding Business Professors at WVU, Part 3

Filed under: Education + Training — admin @ 6:37 am

Students appreciate teachers that can show them how the material they teach can be applied to the real world.

Dr. Richard Riley, an accounting professor at West Virginia University’s College of Business and Economics, goes beyond relating his material to the real world for his students.

He puts them in it.

Graduate students that enroll in Riley’s Accounting and Business Consultation course run a complex simulated business, compete with their classmates, sell a portion of the company to venture capital investors and prepare and deliver a performance report to those same VC investors.

“There is a certain element of pride involved in that program,” Riley said. “The fact students are in competition with their classmates and have to deal with real world people give them extra incentive to embrace the activity.”

“My background is well suited towards students maximizing their potential once they graduate,” Riley said. He entered the academic world in 1998 after nine years of professional experience as a CPA and CFO. “I try to make a very strong connection between what I am doing in the classroom and what they will be doing when they graduate in the real world.” He also incorporates simulated real world-like activities in his fraud and forensic classes.

Riley became motivated to teach after realizing that students often graduate with plenty of knowledge, but little experience in putting that knowledge to work in the classroom.

“I always focus on students getting hands-on experiences in my classes,” Riley said. “The more I can get students’ assignments to emulate what they’ll be doing in the real world, the better off they will be for themselves and their employer.”

Because of his blackboard-to-boardroom approach to teaching, Riley was awarded Outstanding Faculty Member by Beta Alpha Psi in 2000 and in the fall of 2005, he will be awarded Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the College of B&E.

“Students are going through many life experiences as undergrads or grad students,” Riley said. “With so many things going on besides my class, I need to make sure they are prepared when they go to the real world. Students will understand everything I have taught them once they get out there, but providing for that connection is my most important job.”

The Atkins Diet

Filed under: Medical Resources — admin @ 2:23 am

Introduction

The history of The Atkins Diet goes back to the Dr. Atkins’ theory that over-consumption of and hypersensitivity to carbohydrates is the root of our problem with being overweight.
The principle he based his plan on says that it is the way your body processes the carbohydrates you eat — not how much fat you eat — that causes you to gain weight. While most diet experts say that not everyone who has a weight problem is insulin resistant, Atkins says it is more likely than not.

It’s working

By reducing one’s intake of carbohydrates to less than 50 grams a day, one will enter a metabolic process called ketosis, which is nothing but a state in which one’s body will start burning the fat to provide energy. Atkins also says that ketosis will affect insulin production which will prevent more fat from being formed.

The Phases

The Atkins Diet comprises of the 4 stages: induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and maintenance.

Induction is executed in the first fortnight of the plan, during which according to Atkins you can lose up to 15 pounds. This rapid weight loss is due to ceasing the intake of carbs to just 20 grams a day. You are limited to three cups per day. Forget about fruit and starchy vegetables like potatoes. If you consume alcoholic beverages or coffee, you better bid “sayonara” to those as well.

During ongoing weight loss, you can increase your carb intake by 5 grams. You will eventually reach a high and the again have to curb off the carb again.

In pre-maintenance, weight loss will happen gradually and you will be able to test certain foods to see if they could be added in your diet without resulting in weight gain.

Then the maintenance stage is there, when you may introduce some more carbs into your diet… of course not by adding the bad ones, as they will be resulting in the bringing back the weight again.

Facts

The Atkins Diet recommends exercise. Any diet that doesn’t include exercise in its recommendations will probably not be as effective and does not encourage health lifestyle change.

Person suffering from gout, kidney conditions, type I diabetes or pregnant women should not follow Atkins.
According to some health experts, ketosis results in too-rapid, and unusual levels of weight loss and that the loss consists of lean body mass and water.
Regardless of whichever diet you persist on, be it be Atkins or Weight Watchers, diet experts agree that it is calorie reduction that results in weight loss.
After you lose weight, you can’t just revert back to your original ways of eating crabs.

Theme

Remember, one should never start a diet without prior consultation to the doctor. This is pretty much essential with a diet like Atkins because it is so inflexible and is most likely a noteworthy change from your normal eating habits. Additionally, some researches have indicated that this type of diet may endanger the kidneys, result in sunstroke, or lead to other health problems.

Before giving ATKINs a try, ask yourself: Are you committed to limiting your carbs for good? If not, then this plan probably isn’t for you, because even as Atkins himself states, returning to your previous eating habits will bring the weight back.

If you find that Atkins is not for you, you may be averse to the type of foods you are eating. That’s fine — some people simply can’t tolerate eating a certain type of foods, and others feel deprived if their favorites are eliminated. If you don’t feel happy and satisfied with a particular plan, it’s time to find an alternative.

Installing Ceramic Tile

Filed under: Home Improvement Center — admin @ 12:12 am

Ceramic Tile brings a texture, richness and color to a room
that Linoleum has yet to truly mimic. Tile floors can be
installed in any room, however they are most frequently seen in
Bathrooms and Kitchens. I particularly like them in entryways,
where they serve as a transition point from the outside to large
carpeted or hardwood floored rooms. They make for easy clean up
and are impervious to water damage.

Tile Types

Ceramic tiles come in two basic types. Glazed and Porcelain.
Glazed holds up the best for heavy traffic areas and porcelain
works well in bathrooms. Porcelain is typically more expensive,
so consider your budget and the size of the area you want to
tile. Tiles also come in many shapes and sizes. For flooring,
however, I would suggest using larger tiles up to 12″ x 12″.

Underlayment

For proper installation the base foundation or the underlayment
is critical. Typically it consists of ” to 1 ” of plywood.
Tiling over Linoleum or existing tile is also feasible, as long
as it is solid. I also recommend when Tiling over Linoleum that
you first apply ring nails or screws 6″ on center over the
entire area. Tiles can also be installed directly over Concrete.
Make sure in all cases that the floor is level and free of dust
and debris prior to installation. There are leveling compounds
that you can apply before applying tile if necessary.

Preparing the Site

Before actually installing the tile, it is best to lay it out in
the room to see how it will look. Pay close attention to how it
runs out toward the walls, in the corners and next to cabinets,
tubs and toilets. The trick is to lay the tile out such that
stubby tiles do not show up in highly visible spots. Once you
have completed this, make two marks with a pencil outlining the
most centered tile. These lines should be perpendicular to each
other. Also take note of the wall that is most visible from all
the others. Now remove the tiles. Next draw or snap a line
perpendicular to this wall that is in line with one of the marks
you made on the floor. Then, draw a perpendicular line to this
first line. This second line should be centered with the first
line and fairly in line with the second mark you made on the
floor. Once you have completed this task, re-layout some of the
tiles along the perpendicular lines and observe if they run out
in a way that will limit cutting and stubbed tiles. Once this is
completed, remove the tiles and prepare for the actual
installation.

Installing the Tile

Again, make sure the area is free of dirt and dust. Next apply
the ceramic adhesive or mastic to the flooring, starting in the
center, where the two perpendicular reference lines intersect.
Apply enough material to cover 6-10 square feet, if no cuts are
required. If cuts are required limit the amount of mastic
application to about 2-4 square feet. When applying the mastic,
first spread it with the flat end of the trowel. Lay it on
relatively thick, approximately 1/8″ to 3/16″thick. Then turn
the trowel around and run the notched edge over it. This creates
ridges in the mastic that helps to hold the tile down more
securely. The larger the tile, the larger the notches should be.
For example, I use a ” notched trowel for 12″ x 12″ tiles.

Note: Only make up enough ceramic adhesive for 30 minutes, as
this material has the tendency to harden up rather quickly.

Once the adhesive has been applied, begin installing the tiles
working from the center outward. On larger tiles you should back
butter them. Basically, apply a thin coating of mastic to the
back of the tile prior to laying it on the floor. This will help
ensure a good bond.

As you near the walls or edges of cabinets, tubs and toilets,
you will need to cut some of the tiles. I highly recommend the
use of a Wet-Saw. A Wet-Saw will allow you to make very accurate
cuts, both large and small. You will also save money, as you
will waste many fewer tiles with bad cuts or broken tiles.
Wet-Saws are not that expensive and once you see your finished
product you will certainly be installing more tile. Wet-Saws can
also be rented as a cheaper alternative.

When applying Tiles, you may want to use Lugs. Lugs are
effectively spacers that come in various thicknesses. I
typically like to have no more than a ” space between the
tiles. Employing Spacers will ensure uniformity with your tile
spacing.

Grouting

After the Tile has been completely installed, allow it to sit
for 24-48 hours before applying grout and walking on it. Grout
comes in many different colors and is very easy to install.
Simply mix the grout with water or a special bonding agent and
apply with a rubber trowel. Run the trowel on a bias when going
over tile corners.

Once the grout has been applied, immediately wipe the tile of
excess grout, using a wet sponge and a bucket of water. Wait 30
minutes and again wipe the tiles down of any residual grout.
Wait another 60 minutes and repeat. If grout is left on the
tiles to dry, you will have a great deal of elbow work scraping
it off.

Let the grout sit up for 24 hours and it is ready for use and
admiration.
