Web Hosting Review : Bluehost.com

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Website hosting nowsadays is very competitive. Many web hosting
companies offer tonnes of features at very competitive prices.
With so many choices in mind, how do you choose the right host?
I have tried many hosts over the years and finally landed on one
that I feel has the most complete features that I need at the
best possible price, ie BlueHost. Features BlueHost provides
hosting features that surpass the needs of any large commercial
websites:

10 Gigabyte Hosting Space Host 6 Domains on 1 Account!!! 2,500
POP/Imap Email Accounts 250 GIGS of Transfer SSL, FTP, Stats
CGI, PHP, MySQL 2000/2002/2003 Front Page Extensions Free Domain
Forever! Superb/Responsive Support Engineers

They also provide SSH (Secure Shell) service which is a feature
lacking in most host because it might post a security threat if
not managed properly. If you need advance services such as
unzipping files in the server, you will need to use SSH. SSH
access is not terribly important but good to have in a long run.

Reliability and Performance They have been providing hosting
solutions to thousands of business and personal web sites since
1996. Many new hosting companies just come and go, but this one
is able to withstand the test of time. So far, I have no
problems with the speed and reliability of the server. Most of
my sites hosted by them were never down. If you have google
toolbar installed, just take a look at their page rank.
Bluehost.com has a page rank of 8 which is rare for a web
hosting company. The alexa ranking is about 2000 at the time of
writing, indicating the amount of traffic they are getting for
their website. This just shows how popular they are in the web.
If you look at their awards page, you will see that they have a
long history of awards. This is a plus point because it shows
that they care about their customers and more importantly, their
performance is consistent.

Support One important criteria that I use to judge a good host
is their refund policy. Hosting can be cheap but many company
refuse to refund to unsatisfied customers because what they care
is only about money. Bluehost rates their customer service
higher than sales. Though the setup fees is unrefundable, they
are quick to refund the hosting fee if you are unsatisfied
within 30 days.

They have a good support section in the website. Based on my
experience, most of their emails are answered within 2 working
days. It is not the fastest around but their replies are honest
and professional. Some hosts will answer you in such a way that
you need to pay them more money to get your problems solved.

My research in many forums and friends shows that Bluehost has
an extremely high percentage of happy customers.

Conclusion In conclusion, BlueHost offers quality and reliable
hosting for $6.95 a month with no hidden charges. With generous
disk space and bandwidth, it is unlikely that you will exceed
the quota every month. The many good reviews of bluehost in the
web speaks for itself. If you are starting a new website or
looking for a new host, I strongly recommend bluehost.

The Devil: God’s Servant

Monday, March 17th, 2008

According to the official Christian theology, as well as common
acceptance among believers, Satan is the number one enemy of God
and man. Right from the beginning, the Bible tells us how the
devil, disguised as a serpent, deceived Adam and Eve, causing
them to disobey God, i.e. to sin - a sin that brought death to
mankind! The story of the so-called “Original Sin” and the
consequent “Fall of Man” is well known. (I have dealt with it in
a separate article posted in this site)

However, there are accounts in the Bible that present the Devil
as a “son” and “servant” of God! Apparently, Satan has been
allocated certain tasks concerning humans, and he is to be …
respected for the work he is doing.

Let us examine some relevant scriptures.

Here is a story where Satan appears to be one of the “sons of
God”, who regularly presents himself before the Lord giving
report about what is happening on the earth. One of the tasks of
Satan seems to be the trial of righteous men, like Job, in order
to test their faith. Before doing this, Satan needs permission
from God. He cannot decide on his own whom to try and how far to
go in testing.

“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present
themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. The
Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’ Satan answered
the Lord, ‘From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking
up and down on it.’ And the Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you
considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the
earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away
from evil?’ Then Satan answered the Lord, ‘Does Job fear God for
nothing? Have you not put a hedge around him and his household
and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands,
so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But
stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will
surely curse you to your face.’ And the Lord said to Satan,
‘Behold, all that he has is in your power; only upon himself do
not put forth your hand.’ So Satan went forth from the presence
of the Lord.” (Job 1: 6-12)

In the above account of the Old Testament, God appears to have
given Satan permission to strike everything Job had, save his
own life. And, as we know from the rest of the story, Satan did
exactly this. But in spite of the calamities that befell upon
Job, he didn’t lose faith in God, nor did he curse the Lord, as
Satan anticipated.

Here is another account from the New Testament:

“Yet in like manner these filthy dreamers defile the flesh,
despise authority, and blaspheme celestial beings. But when the
archangel Michael, contending with the devil, disputed about the
body of Moses, he did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation
against him, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you’.” (Jude: 8-9)

Once again the Scripture verifies that Satan (the devil) is a
celestial being who has authority given to him by God. As such,
he must be respected by men and not be slandered! Not even
Michael, the archangel, dared to accuse him, when they were
contending about the body of Moses. Regarding the ground of the
dispute, the scriptures don’t give us other details. It is up to
the reader, who knows the life of Moses, to guess why the great
prophet stood on the borderline between Michael’s jurisdiction
and that of Satan.

>From the New Testament we also know that even Jesus had to be
tempted by the Devil! However, it was the Spirit, i.e. God
himself, who led Jesus into the wilderness. As in the case of
Job and every other saint, God gave permission to the Devil to
put Jesus to trial regarding his identity and his mission. Here
is the relevant verse:

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be
tempted by the devil.” (Matt. 4: 1) How did Satan tempt Jesus in
the wilderness? In what areas of his personality concentrated
his fiery darts? Let us see:

“And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he
was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are
the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’
But he answered, ‘It is written: Man shall not live by bread
alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’.”
(Matt. 4: 2-4)

Satan proceeded very methodically and wisely into his task.
First he tempted Jesus on his physical need. Jesus, after forty
days’ fast, was desperately hungry. Would he use his miraculous
powers to fill his stomach? This is a test which every man and
woman of God undergoes and where most fail. But Jesus did not!
Of course, filling the stomach has an allegorical meaning here:
it refers to pursuing material riches, something to which most
of the miracle workers succumb.

“Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the
pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of
God, throw yourself down; for it is written: He will command his
angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ Jesus
answered him, ‘It is also written: Do not put the Lord your God
to the test’.” (Matt. 4: 5-7)

In his second temptation, Satan enticed Jesus to put God, and
indeed the Scriptures, to the test. Could God save Jesus from
death if he deliberately exposed himself to danger? But Jesus
answered back to Satan with another scripture! We are not to put
the Lord to the test. Indeed, God is able and willing to save
his servants from dangers - according to their faith - but not
from intentionally created ones, in order to test the Almighty!
We are the ones to be tested, not God.

“Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed
him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. And he
said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you fall down and
worship me.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For
it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God and him only
shall you serve.’ Then the devil left him, and behold, angels
came and ministered to him.” (Matt. 4: 8-11)

In spite of his first two failures, the Devil did not give up.
He had kept a last ace up his sleeve. Being the prince of the
material world, he offered its “kingdoms” to Jesus, i.e. fame,
glory and power, if he only worshipped him. But Jesus did not
bow down before Satan. He was not interested to be a temporary
worldly Messiah, ruling over the kingdoms of the earth. He had
chosen to be an eternal spiritual King instead. His kingdom
wasn’t of this world but it was spiritual and, as such, it was
invisible. Yet its splendor could not compare with that of all
the worldly kingdoms together. Jesus was sure about what he
wanted. He longed to be “one with the Father”, who is Spirit,
and thus become the light of the world.

Failing for a third time, the devil left Jesus. He had no
permission from God to go any further. Then the angels of God
took charge and ministered to Jesus! Happy is the servant of God
who, after passing all the tests, stands and is ministered to by
the angels of God.

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
(Matt.6: 13)

Here is a verse from the ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. We are instructed
to ask God not to lead us into temptation! Once again it is
verified by scriptures that it is God himself and not Satan who
leads us into temptation. Satan cannot do anything against us
unless he takes permission from God. It is comforting to be
aware of this. So we don’t have to fear Satan, for he is under
God’s restrictions.

“I am the Lord and there is no other; I form the light, and
create darkness; I make peace, and create evil. I the Lord do
all these things.” (Isa. 45: 6b-7)

This verse, and other similar ones in the Scriptures, is for
many Bible students a stumbling block. How could the Holy God be
also the creator of evil? Yet this makes more sense than
believing that there are two creators in the Universe, i.e. God,
who creates only good, and Satan who creates only evil. Besides,
can there be anything outside God? He is inherent in all
Creation by His Spirit, and everything that exists is under the
control of God’s Sovereign Laws!

“Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Behold, the
devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be
tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful
unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Rev. 2: 10)

Here we see the spirit of Christ informing the believers in
advance about Satan’s plan. Some Christians from the Church of
Smyrna would be put into prison in order to be tested. Christ
wanted to warn and encourage those people to stand fast in their
faith so that they could win the crown of eternal life.

“In your anger do not sin; do not let the sun go down while you
are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” (Eph. 4:
26-27)

In this verse we have another aspect of how a trial comes
about. Paul says that we, ourselves, open up the way to the
“devil” when we give him a “foothold” by our thoughts, words or
actions. Let the student of the spiritual kingdom be aware of
this.

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand
against the wiles of the devil.” (Eph. 6: 11)

Paul warns us to always wear the full armor of God that we may
stand the snares of the devil in the day of temptation. He is
talking, of course, about a spiritual armor, the details of
which we shall see in the chapter of Prayer.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he
will flee from you.” (Jam. 4: 7)

All we have to do is to submit totally to God while resisting
the devil (the flesh with its cravings). Then Satan will flee
from us. This is comforting! We don’t have to worry about the
devil and his devices.

“Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he
hardens the heart of whomever he wills. You will say to me then,
‘ Why does God still blame us? For who can resist his will?’ But
who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed
say to him who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ Does
not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of
clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?”
(Rom. 9: 18-21)

In the above we have a very hard Scripture. It is difficult for
the believer to accept that God himself, and not the devil,
hardens the heart of whomever he wills. Could Paul, who
elsewhere has admitted that ‘We know in part’, be wrong in this
scripture? Are, then, some people made for common use while
others are made for noble purposes? Of course there are many
things we see in the world that we cannot explain. However, who
of us can judge God? It is enough to judge ourselves and see
when and where have we been responsible for creating evil inside
us and around us.

As for our attitude towards God, instead of complaining or
accusing Him for the evil, it will do us good to stand in
humility and awe before the Almighty, acclaiming: ‘Praise You
Lord, for surely You have made everything in wisdom’!

How to Prevent your Nasal Allergy?

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Do you know why and how your nose could feel itching and sensitive? The substances that cause itching and sensitive of your nose are called allergens. These include pollen, mold, dust mites, certain foods, latex, animal dander, and others. These allergens sensitize the nasal mucosal membrane through a sensitization process, which typically involves a few types of cell in our body, such as macrophage, lymphocyte and mast cell. In the beginning of the sensitization, allergens penetrate through the mucosal surface in our nasal passage. The easiness of the allergens penetrate through the mucosal surface is due to the deficiency of IgA antibodies, which main function is eliminating micro organisms that adhere to the mucosal surface. Usually, patients, who allergic to the allergen, have lower level of IgA antibodies.

The second step of the sensitization process is scavenging of the allergen by the macrophage cell. Macrophage cell is the large scavenger cell in the blood, whose function is eating up antigen, which is from outside of our body. During the scavenging process, macrophage cells also pass information about the invasion of foreign antigen to the lymphocyte cell, which involves several enzymes. Lymphocytes are stimulated by this information and multiplied to transform into plasma cells, which would synthesize IgE antibodies. IgE antibodies move to the mast and basophil cells around the eye, mouth and nose via tissue fluid and blood where they bind to the mast and basophil cells. When an allergen forms a bridge between two IgE molecules on the mast or basophil cells surface, histamine, which is a primary chemical mediator, will be released. This chemical will stimulate exocrine glands, contract smooth muscles in the bronchi, dilate blood vessels and increase their permeability and cause itch. Second chemical; prostaglandin, which is a secondary mediator, is synthesized in all types of cell and this chemical will cause inflammation around the mucosal surface inside the nostril.

How to avoid nasal allergy? We knew that nasal allergy is caused by the allergen; therefore, the first method to avoid nasal allergy is eliminating the allergen in our house or room. People who are allergic to house dust may not have allergy to the road or field dust. This is because house dust containing house dust mite, which is the major allergic component. Mites like to live in mattresses and box spring that containing cotton fillers or kapok. So, we should replace this thing to foam rubber encased with durable impervious material. Besides, we also should replace eiderdown, blankets and pillows with the one that are less hospitable to mites. In addition, dust-collecting upholstered furniture and carpets should not keep in the room because it accumulates dust mites. To keep the house dust mites low in our house, we should vacuum-clean our house frequently.

Allergy condition for the people who are allergic to animal dander can improve quickly if they remove their animal from the house. However, if the particular person’s allergy condition is too critical, his nose may still feel itching for a period of some few months after removal of the animal. This is due to the animal dander that has left in the furniture and carpets. If the allergy continues for a longer period of time, it may due to an indirect exposure to hidden allergenic substances or other allergens. If what has been mentioned above still could not improve your allergy condition or it is inconvenient for you to carry out what has been mentioned above, you may go through immunotherapy.

The second allergen that could cause nasal allergy is pollen. Pollen is released from the tree or grass seasonally. Therefore, it is quite difficult to avoid this allergen even though you keep yourself indoor in the city flat or house with the window and door closed. People with hay fever should not live in the dark flat or house with window and door closed during these best months of the year. They can just go through a short period of systemic steroid treatment, which could allow them to live an almost normal life during this short period of pollen season. Pollen season is in the late spring and early summer in the seasonal country but it is almost 10 months long in the non-seasonal country. To avoid pollen outdoor, I think the only way is wearing filtration mask or make sure you have taken antihistamine medicine before going out. However, indoor pollen could be reduced by installing electrostatic air cleaner, HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) Filters, air conditioning, dehumidifier, humidifier and ionizer (negative ion generator).

Electrostatic air cleaner is also called as electrostatic precipitator. It consists a fan, which is used to draw the air that containing particles to pass through electrical charged plate where the particle is trapped. The tedious job for this equipment is that you need to frequently clean the plate that traps the particles because when the particles accumulate too much on the plate, it may cause its trapping efficiency drops.

HEPA filtration can remove particles that as fine as 0.3 microns. Therefore, this equipment can remove most of the particulate matter in the room not only pollen but also including bacteria, dust mite, molds, yeast and spores, which are also allergens to nasal allergy. HEPA filtration is very efficient to relieve hay fever and asthma symptoms. It can relieve the hay fever and asthma symptoms within ten minutes to half an hour after switching on the equipment. When the potassium permanganate and charcoal is combined with the HEPA filter, it can clear the big particulate matter like dust and pollen as well as chemical odor. This is because potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent, which could decompose most of the dust and organic substances; whereas, charcoal could adsorb most of the volatile organic substances.

Air conditioning is also one of equipment that can reduce pollen count in a closed room air to around zero. Usually, pollen level in an unfiltered room with window open is about one-third the outdoor level. With this level, it is high enough to aggravate symptoms in anyone with pollen allergy. Similar to electrostatic air cleaner, air conditioning’s coils and filters need to be cleaned frequently to prevent mold contamination. Besides, air conditioning’s cooling temperature should not be set to too low because air that too cold can aggravate respiratory allergy.

It is better for them who have asthma or nasal allergy and other respiratory allergies to breathe moist air in order that their nose and bronchial passages will not dry up. There is not a problem for people who live in equatorial and tropical country because humidity level in these countries is very high. However, this level may be too high and it can promote growth of house dust mites, molds and fungi and tends to carry more dust and pollen. The suitable level of humidity in the house is about 35 to 50 percent. With this level, people won’t feel uncomfortable and it also could prevent proliferation of allergen around the house. Therefore, people who live in the seasonal countries need a humidifier in winter and a dehumidifier in the summer; whereas, people who live in the non seasonal countries need a dehumidifier to reduce their house moisture level to prevent growing of molds, dust mites and fungi. Humidifier and dehumidifier need to be clean frequently with stiff brush.

Ionizer or negative ion generator is a machine that generates negative ion into the air. Particles surface is positively charged; therefore, when negative ion is attracted to the particles surface, its positive charges are electrically neutralized by these negative ions. Particles with neutralized surface are tend to deposit on the wall or floor. With this equipment, particles in the air can be reduced with the condition that the air in the room is not blown up by a fan. Therefore, in order to make the house free of dust particles, wall, floor, carpet and furniture have to be vacuum-cleaned frequently.

Prevention is one of the ways to temporarily relieve nasal allergy symptoms. However, based on cost, there are other ways that are cheaper to cure nasal allergy without any side effect.

Edema: Another Pregnancy Dilemma

Monday, March 17th, 2008

We’re having a baby!!! More often than not, that is the usual tone that people have when they’ve found out that their having a baby, specially the mothers. But with the joy that comes from welcoming a new life into this earth also comes the harsh realities that a woman must face during pregnancy. Behind the excitement of baby showers and picking names and wondering what the gender of the baby would be, there are the hardships that a woman must go through before she can experience the joys of motherhood. Such hardships include gaining weight, thus feeling fat and ugly, having morning sickness, and being irritable, just to name a few.

One of the less popular pains that pregnant women experience is edema. Well, actually no, it is not unpopular. It’s just that few people recognize the word. Edema is simply a medical term for the swelling that pregnant women experience usually in their feet, ankles, and legs. A simple explanation would be that as the baby grows inside the womb of a woman, more pressure is exerted in her pelvic veins and the vein that receives blood from her lower extremities, called the vena cava. As a result, circulation is somewhat impeded and blood pools in the leg area. Fluids are then forced into the feet and ankles, and the accumulation of which results to edema, or what is more commonly known as swelling. Sometimes, excess water retention that happens during pregnancy contributes even more to the swelling.

Edema usually occurs during the third trimester of pregnancy when the baby is big enough to exert enough pressure to actually slow down circulation. And although edema is not really a threatening disease or a cause to worry, it could bring a lot of discomfort to the already difficult situation that a pregnant woman is in. Thankfully, there are things you can do to somehow relieve the stress brought about by edema. Here are some tips:

As much as possible, keep your feet and legs in an elevated position. You can put it up in a chair, table, or whatever furniture/thing possible.

Always stretch your legs especially during prolonged sitting and while you’re at it, also try rotating your ankles and wiggling your toes.

Forget fashion and go for comfort, at least for the meantime. Wear comfortable shoes, big enough for the swelling in your feet and ankles.

Drink lots and lots of water!

Even if you’re pregnant, still do some light exercise regularly as much as your pregnancy can permit you.

Try to eat a balanced and nutritious diet and avoid sodium and salt, instead focus on the proteins.

As I said, edema is quite normal during pregnancies and it should not cause too much worry. However, you should also make sure that the symptoms you’re experiencing indicate that it is indeed edema and not something more complicated. If swelling occurs in your hands and face in a sudden manner, immediately consult your doctor as this may indicate preeclampsia, a disorder that also occurs during pregnancy but much more serious. Also, if swelling is not the same for both feet, it may be a symptom of a vascular problem and a doctor must be consulted as well.

Once you’re sure that it is edema, then there’s really no need to worry. Just follow the tips that were written above for the few months that you will be having edema. It should help a lot in improving how you feel during this time, plus you can always look ahead to the time when you would feel that all these pains and discomforts are nothing. That is the time when you get to bring into this world a beautiful being, someone that is special and someone that is your own, and everything you’ve experienced would just be worth it!
