A Blog Isn’t Just For Christmas

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

I was watching the news on TV last night and there was a warning about buying puppies as Christmas presents. There’s nothing worse than visiting the kennels in the new year and seeing all those unwanted dogs that were chosen as presents because they were so cute at the time. It reminded me of people who start a blog in the hope of making some money online only to give up after a few days or weeks when things don’t work out.

The average blogger makes around $20 to $50 per month. So, if that is the average, it stands to reason that some people make less than that and some people make more. The amount of potential income that can be generated by blogging depends entirely upon your ability to build a loyal audience of people who have money to spend.

There is no point in creating a blog and then looking for an audience. Your first task is to identify a hungry market and provide it with high quality information. Once you have established your blog and created some interesting content, your next task is to attract your hungry audience to your blog. There are many ways of attracting traffic to a blog site including banner adverts, ezine advertising, pay per click traffic, links fro other web sites and submitting your site to the specialist blog search engines.

There are literally hundreds of blog sites that lay desolate and abandoned like an old frontier town with tumbleweeds blowing through on the breeze. Their owners failed to identify a hungry market, they failed to attract visitors or they simply gave up posting fresh new content to their blogs.

Blogs are dynamic web sites, they require time and attention. Search engines love them because they are frequently updated with fresh new content. People love them because they regularly provide new and interesting information. But you have to persist, just like any other business, online or offline, you have to work at building up your content, building up an audience of loyal readers and creating a portfolio of products and services that will appeal to your readers and generate some income.

There are many ways of generating income from your blog. Several people have created successful niche sites that offer product reviews including books, software, videos, DVDs and other popular products. Other bloggers earn their income from the sale of advertising space and yet others generate income through pay per click systems such as Google’s Adsense programme.

There is now another way of building a profitable blog. A brand new hosted blog service - http://www.Blog4Cash.com has married a fully featured blogging service with a two tier affiliate programme thus allowing you to build up a residual income from everyone who signs up through your referral. This provides a great opportunity to build up a regular income to supplement your regular blog profit.

So remember, to become a truly successful blogger you must take a long term view and seek to provide interesting content for a hungry market with money to spend. Don’t expect to achieve profit overnight and plan to build a portfolio of income streams some of which have a residual element that will provide you will a recurring income.

The Modern Guide to Naming Your Baby

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

One of the hundred million things new parents have to do is pick
out a name for the baby, preferably before the child reaches his
or her 18th birthday, if for no other reason than it is very
difficult to register to vote when you are only known as “Baby
Smith.”

Picking a name is a little trickier and more important than you
first think. You want your child to be successful and confident
in the world. You want your child to take charge of life and be
able to face others and make good first impressions. It is for
this reason that very few children are named “Roscoe” anymore.

Now, before I start getting email and nasty comments from
hundreds of people named Roscoe (as if someone named Roscoe
could use a computer!) I want to assure you that I think there
is absolutely nothing wrong with the name Roscoe if you never
want your child to be anymore than a truck mechanic or run a
roadside barbecue pit in Kentucky. And with a name like that you
can easily save money on clothing because you know there are
plenty of bowling shirts and overalls at your local Goodwill
that already have the name “Roscoe” stitched right on them. I
mean, are there any astronauts named Roscoe? How many nobel
prize winners have been named Roscoe? I’m too lazy to actually
check this, but I’m pretty sure the number is right around zero,
give or take a few.

So how do you go about picking a baby name?

The big trend in naming babies these days is picking a common
name and then giving it some sort of “alternative” spelling
which breaks most of the common sense rules of the English
language. For example, one of the trendiest new boys name is
“Dylan” but that’s a very traditional spelling. Modern parents
would likely use one of these alternatives:

* Dillon * Dillan * Dylin * Dillllllen * Dil8an (the 8 is
silent) * Roscoe

If you really want to be on the cutting edge of baby-naming
(and, really, who doesn’t?) then you’ll make up some sort of
name using the parts of various other popular names. For
example, the top ten very popular girl names right now are:
Emily, Emma, Hannah, Madison, Olivia, Grace, Elizabeth, Abigail,
Samantha and Alexis. A truly progressive parent would come up
with one of these variations:

* Emmadison * Grolivia * Abixis * Elizabigailexisamanthannah *
Samadison * Roscoe

If you’re still having a hard time picking out your baby’s name,
you’re not alone. There are, however, a lot of different ways to
go about it.

Lots of people turn to books to suggest names for their babies
and it’s pretty evident who these parents are when we have
little Zeus and Jeronin digging with shovels in the sandbox
while Lucritia and Saranese are playing jacks on the sidewalk.

If books aren’t your thing then maybe you should turn on the
television for a few hours and simply write down every name you
hear and think if any of those sound good to you or not. Being
selective is the key here. No matter how pretty your daughter is
she probably won’t be named prom queen if she’s named “Larry
King” or “Spongebob”.

Lastly, you could always look back into your own family history
and name your baby after a particularly important relative. If
you don’t have any particularly important relatives, then aim to
name your child after a particularly old and rich relative. Hey,
it never hurts.

Now that you’ve finally picked out a baby name you can relax,
right? Wrong! Far from it!

This is your first chance of many to screw with people’s minds.
You’re going to be a parent soon and your mind-screwing ability
is going to have to be pretty top-notch. Do you think it’s going
to be easy to get a three-year old to go to bed on time every
night? Heck, no! You’re going to have to tell all sorts of
fantastic stories about monsters coming to get him or killer
robots enslaving the world if he doesn’t get to bed at a decent
hour.

Really, one can argue that most of child-raising is based on the
idea of tricking the little buggers into doing what you want
them to do. So get used to pulling this sort of stunt. You’re
going to be a parent. It’s your duty now.

You see, the last thing you want to do is pick out these great
baby names and then tell you friends and family because they’ll
immediately make comments like “Oh, are you sure about that?”
and “Oh… that’s…. interesting…” and “Oh, dear God!!” And
then you’ll be forced to listen to hours and hours of stories
about why the name you like for your baby is all wrong and why
you should really name the baby “Dillynn”.

No, what you need to do is now spend some time picking out the
worse possible names you can possible think of and beginning
telling people that those names are what you’re going to give
your child. For example, let’s say you found the perfect baby
name. You should keep the name to yourself and tell everyone you
know that you’re going to name him “Englebert Horatio” with a
straight face. You’ll earn extra credibility if you buy a few
bibs with “Englebert” stitched on them. Tell your parents how
you’re planning on calling him “Eggy” when he’s young.

This way when your baby is born you can surprise your friends
and relatives with a the real name and make them all sigh a
huge, collective sigh of relief (except for aunt Jane who alread
purchased a silver baby rattle with the initials “EH” engraved
on it).

This will especially please the person you named your new baby
after - your old rich uncle Roscoe.

San Francisco Bay Charter’s Handbook- Suggested 2 Day Trip

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Suggested 2 day trip

South Beach Harbor at Pier 40 in San Francisco is a great
destination for a first overnight cruise. It’s a reasonable
distance from Redwood City. At about 20 miles, it’s only 4
hours away even at the stately speed of 5 knots. The harbor
is easy to find, easy to get in and out, and easy to maneuver
in. There are facilities such as heads and showers and lots
of restaurants and other shops ashore.

We suggest you plan your trip on a weekend when there is
morning maximum ebb approximately between 9:00 and
10:30. This will give you a favorable current heading up to
San Francisco in the morning and favorable current coming
back in the afternoon the next day. If you leave Redwood City
as late as the time of maximum current, you’ll be arriving
about the time the current goes slack. This would give you
plenty of time to get to South Beach and may even give you
enough time to sail past Pier 40 and the Bay Bridge to check
out the North Bay, Alcatraz Island, etc. before settling in at
South Beach Harbor.

Make your reservations with harbor office at (415) 495-4911.
The overnight fee is $1.00 per foot. There is also a $50 key
deposit, which can be done with an authorized credit card.
The harbor master monitors VHF channel 16 if you need to
call via marine radio.

Pac Bell Park is within walking distance and there are
several restaurants in the area. Take advantage of the extra
time the next day to explore the North Bay a little before
heading back to Redwood City. Just allow about 4 hours of
sailing time from the Bay Bridge for the trip south. It’s likely
you’ll have the wind in your favor the whole way and if it’s a
normal spring or summer day there will be lots of it. What a
way to finish a weekend sail!

Don’t Quit Smoking If You Want An Early Death - Want to Live Longer, Find Support.

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

There was a time when smoking a cigarette was kind of the “chic” and fashionable thing to do in many social environments. During many years (and still today) there was kind of a social conditioning for smoking. It was like wearing a nice suit or a fashionable hat. Something everyone should “use” if they ever wanted to be included in the “winners” side at the end of the game. Regretfully, the game is over already for many smokers that had to suffer the most common consequence of smoking, i.e., an early death.

The most active ingredient in a cigarette and the one that is involved in causing the heavy addictive characteristics of tobacco is the naturally occurring liquid alkaloid better known as Nicotine.

While there are thousands of chemicals in a single cigarette, including the naturally occurring ones and also those added by cigarette manufacturers, it is one, Nicotine, that produces all the good feelings that draw people back for another cigarette or plug of tobacco, again and again.

In the standard procedures of cigarette manufacturing, producers use tobacco where Nicotine normally makes up about 5 percent of the plant by weight. Just packed cigarettes, contain 8 to 20 milligrams (mg) of nicotine (depending on the brand you prefer to smoke), but only approximately 1 mg is actually absorbed by your body when you smoke a cigarette.

But you do not need industrial amounts of Nicotine in your body in order to become addicted to cigarettes. This minimal quantity of Nicotine that you absorb with each cigarette you smoke is more than enough to make you eternally beg for more, and more again.

Nicotine readily diffuses into your body through the following channels: Skin, Lungs, and the Mucous membranes such as the lining of your nose or your gums. That’s why you will get equally addicted to nicotine even if you just chew and spit tobacco.

The path Nicotine follows into your body starts right into the small blood vessels that line the tissues covering the channels mentioned above. From there, nicotine travels through your bloodstream and then it safely arrives to the brain, and then is delivered to the rest of your body.

Even considering that Nicotine takes a lot of different actions throughout the smokers body (many of them very bad), what it does once it has arrived to the brain is responsible for both the good feelings you get from smoking, as well as the irritability you feel if you try to quit; i.e., the brain becomes addicted. Within 10 to 15 seconds of inhaling the smoke of your cigarette, you will probably be in the throes of nicotine’s effects.

Nicotine initially causes a rapid release of Adrenaline, the “fight-or-flight” hormone. The effects of this hormone are the familiar: Rapid heartbeat, increased blood pressure, and rapid, shallow breathing. All this state of high alertness caused by adrenaline also tells your body to dump some of its glucose stores into your blood.

And if we consider that Nicotine itself may also block the release of the hormone insulin. This all means that nicotine puts people in a hyperglycemic state, having more sugar than usual in their blood torrent. So you become kind of a part-time diabetic with each cigarette you smoke and with the long term consequences this condition brings.

This is not all because over the long haul, as you keep smoking and absorbing nicotine everyday, this can increase the level of the “bad” cholesterol (LDL) in your blood which will in consequence cause great damage to your arteries. And this will make it more likely that over time, and this is not a very long time, you could have a heart attack or a stroke.

The health problems associated with using nicotine-containing products are far worse than any benefits you may feel at the beginning. The average person will be in high risk of; Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Stroke and Emphysema.

It should be mentioned that many of these illnesses are actually caused by other chemicals in cigarette smoke or in smokeless tobacco products, different to Nicotine. The biggest problem with nicotine is how easily it makes you become dependent on smoking or chewing tobacco. Which also brings up the conclusion that Nicotine-free cigarettes are not much healthier, maybe less addictive but equally dangerous.

The position of the medical and scientific communities world wide is that nicotine is definitely addictive. Nicotine meets both the psychological and physiological characteristics of what we call an addiction.

When trying to quit smoking you will surely have these symptoms, arising due to the lack of nicotine in your blood stream: Irritability, Anxiety, Depression, Craving for nicotine. And yes, no one denies it; quitting cigarette smoking can be a real nightmare for many people.

For many smokers, even a day without Nicotine is excruciating. Statistics indicate that every year, millions of people try to break the nicotine habit but only 10 percent of them succeed. Will you succeed?

Submit Article 101: Get Free Publicity With Article Marketing

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

If you are looking to gain exposure and increase traffic for your website, there’s a terrific new way to spread the word about your new spot on the world wide web. A submit article directory is one of the best, free ways to promote your business. The bottom line is that not everyone has the advantage of being able to afford a large marketing campaign, print or television advertising.

If you’ve ever been browsing through a website and found an article with a brief paragraph at the end, which shows the author’s name and a link to their website, then you have already experienced the success of how to submit an article in exchange for free publicity. An internet entrepreneur prepares an article, which is centered around their niche and submits it to a submit article directory. This process begins to work when other webmasters visit the submit article directory in search of articles for use on their own websites. Everyone wants interesting content for their website and this is a great way to find it. They may see this article and decide to add it to their site with the condition that the author is given full credit at the bottom of the feature. The credit will likely include the author’s name, brief bio and link to their website.

For each individual who reads your article, there is added potential for new customers. If they weren’t interested in your specialty, they wouldn’t be reading the article in the first place. So, you’ve already reached someone who has a direct interest in your product or niche. Once they are finished reading the article, they are likely to visit your website if they found the information to be valuable.

Submit article directory services are completely free for writers, as well as webmasters. Consider that you are opening an internet collectibles store and need to gain interest, spread the word and find customers for your new business. Well, you are obviously a collectibles expert since that’s your chosen business, so write about it. Select a topic, write a brief feature, offer advice and submit the final copy to a submit article directory. At the bottom, always be sure to include a brief paragraph with your name, some information about your new company and a link to your website. When other webmasters stop by the submit article directory in search of news for their site, they may be inclined to use your work on their website. If they do, they will also include a link back to your site.

Submit article directory services provide the potential for a large amount of increased traffic and exposure for a new, or existing, website. There is no better way to gain respect in your profession than by being knowledgeable about what you do. If you are, it will shine through in your work and people will be drawn into your site in search of even more information. Submit article directory services are one of the most powerful new promotional tools available to online entrepreneurs and, best of all - they don’t cost a penny! It’s true what they say - the best things in life really are free.
