Who Invented the Motorcycle?

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

If you know the answer to this, you are far more the historian than am I. I am betting alot of people today would simply say that Harley-Davidson invented the motorcycle. Although they did not invent the motorcycle, they sure had a big part in mass producing bikes for the everyday commuting population.

The truth, as history states it, all depends on one’s definition of what exactly is a motorcycle. By todays common definition, a motorcycle is a two-wheeled motorized vehicle. But what is the motor? is it gas, electric, or steam driven?

Here is the Wikipedia definition for Motorcycle:

A - motorcycle - is a two-wheeled vehicle powered by an engine. The wheels are in-line, and at higher speed the motorcycle remains upright and stable by virtue of gyroscopic forces; at lower speeds continual readjustment of the steering by the rider gives stability. The rider sits astride the vehicle on a seat, with hands on a set of handlebars which are used to steer the motorcycle, in conjunction with the rider shifting his weight through his feet, which are supported on a set of footpegs which stick out from the frame.

Yes, I said steam. The steam-engine motorcycle was invented in 1967. This coal-powered steam engine was invented by Sylvester Howard Roper, an American inventor. The steam-engine motorcycle ran on two cylinders.

Now a few years later the first petroleum gas-powered engine motorcycle was invented in 1885 by Gottlieb Daimler. This motorcycle used a Four-Stroke Internal-Combustion Engine which was invented in 1876. This is a bookmark in history since was the first real practical application of combining a practical gas engine with a bicycle. The Four-Stroke Internal-Combustion Engine that Gottleib Daimler used was invented by Nicolaus August Otto.

Now this all leads us up to 1903 and the creation of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. A motorcycle company formed by William Harley with Arthur and Walter Davidson. At the turn of the century the demand for mass produced automobiles was increasing. Along with this, was a demand for motorcycles. The pedal-powered bicycles were everywhere in everyday 1903 life. The public wanted more. As with the auto industry, the race track was the place where technology flourished. Harley-Davidson built their first bike with a high-performance engine. They used this bike to win races. The race wins brought them brand name recognition. The next step was for Harley-Davidson to start mass producing motorcycles for the public.

Now fast forward 100 years later and we now see motorcycles everywhere. Motorcycle build and enthusiast shows are everywhere on cable television. Everyone wants to own a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. This is mainly because of their incredible brand name recognition vice the actual quality of their product. Motorcycling is gowing more popular every year. There are Motorcycle Safety courses to teach new riders. Of which, the majority are women. I think women have finally decided they want to ride their own bike and no longer want to be the passenger. It is all good and the motorcycling industry is gearing their products towards this new market base.

With all this information, when you appear on Jeopardy and are asked, “who invented the motorcycle?” Hopefully you will have enough information to correctly answer Alex’s question.

Ride safe.

Seinfeld (Season 4) DVD Review

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

One of the best sitcoms not just of its time, but of all time, Seinfeld redefined the sitcom genre. No longer was it necessary to have contrived plot, a lesson to be learned, or some other ridiculous cookie-cutter approach. With Seinfeld, an episode could be about nothing and everything all at the same time. The show follows the lives of four friends living in New York City, stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld, his childhood friend George Costanza (Jason Alexander), his eccentric next-door neighbor Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards), and his ex-girlfriend Elaine Benese (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Together, they form one of the most unforgettable comedy teams in television history.

The Seinfeld (Season 4) DVD offers a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere in which Jerry asks George to accompany him on a trip to Los Angeles where he’ll be appearing on The Tonight Show. While in Hollywood, the two attempt to track down Kramer who recently moved there to become a star. But the trip goes awry when hotel maid Lupe can’t grasp the concept of George’s preferred bed tuck, Jerry loses his Tonight Show material, and Kramer is fingered by local police as the prime suspect in the “smog strangler” killings… Other notable episodes from Season 4 include “The Bubble Boy” in which George incurs the wrath of an entire township following his argument over a Trivial Pursuit question with a local handicapped icon who (for medical reasons) lives in a bubble, and “The Contest” (based on a real life Larry David experience) in which Jerry, George, Kramer, and Elaine place a wager on who can practice self-denial the longest… “The Junior Mint” and “The Handicap Spot” round out a year that is arguably the best season in Seinfeld’s hilarious nine-year run…

Winter Holidays for the Eco Conscious Holiday Maker

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Dozens avid skiers will presently be dusting down their ski gear and dashing off hunting for the deepest snowfall.

And undoubtedly the result from your carbon footprint will be almost as far down the list of holiday essentials as a turkey sandwich after xmas.

Just last Christmas, a tardy snow hit the headlines and tourists were panicky about the smattering of snow melting nearly as soon as they settled.

Snowboarding company Chalet1802, located at the foot of Mount Blanc in the French Alps, is one of the first autonomous firms to go carbon neutral and offer skiers an environmentally friendly option when organising their ski vacations.

Chalet1802 owner Elethea stated: Last year was a bit of a surprise with the most warm wintertime in 55 years in France. It was mild and the snowfall didn’t settle so a lot of the early winter snowboarding season in the Alps was limited. We decided to become carbon negative to assist in the preservation the ski resort.

ELETHEA said: We’re not assaying to dictate to clients but we think it’s crucial to provide the clients the option without raising the price of the ski holiday. If the customer book with us they can more than off-set their carbon footprint and we soak up the added costs. Naturally we still have a sauna and a hot tub - holiday makers wish for lavishness but not at the expense of the environment, so we considered ways of decreasing the affect of a guest flying over here for a ski holiday.”
