A common factor is going to be a number that will equally divide into both numbers. An example would be 3 is a common factor for 6 and 12. Three will equally divide into 6 and into 12. Two being a common factor for 4 and 14 is another example for this. The same division process needs to be repeatedly run until there are no common factors left. You can also do this same process by finding the GCF of both the numerator and the denominator. You will divide the numerator and the denominator by the greatest common factor instead of the common factor.
